Start by checking which one you have, then try the reversible fixes first: open another folder, restart Windows Explorer, and restart Windows. Remove an update or repair system files only if the problem persists and the timing points to that step.
First, identify what is blank
File Explorer Home and Quick access can show pinned folders, recent files, and frequently used folders. An empty Home view is not the same as a window that will not load, or a blank desktop. The steps below distinguish those cases because a setting affecting Home may not explain a whole-window or desktop problem.

- Only Home or Quick access is empty: The File Explorer window and controls appear, but the landing view has no items.
- The whole File Explorer window is blank or unresponsive: The window opens, but its contents do not load or respond.
- The desktop is blank after sign-in: The taskbar or desktop may be missing too. Treat this as a shell problem rather than a Home-view setting.
If the window frame and controls work, select another folder in the navigation pane or open This PC. If that shows files, the issue may be limited to Home or Quick access.

Restart Windows Explorer
Restarting the Explorer process is a low-risk first step for a stuck shell or blank window. Microsoft documents this approach for a blank screen with a cursor; it is a reasonable process restart to try for a window-only symptom, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every cause.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Under Processes, select Windows Explorer, then select Restart.
- If Windows Explorer is not listed, choose File > Run new task, type
explorer.exe, and press Enter.
The taskbar or desktop may briefly disappear while Explorer restarts. If the blank view returns, continue with the next checks.
Restart Windows and check for updates
Microsoft’s general File Explorer troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting the device and checking for available Windows updates. Save your work, restart the PC, then open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install available updates and restart again if Windows prompts you.

If only Home or Quick access is empty
When another folder such as This PC displays normally, review File Explorer’s view and privacy settings. In File Explorer, open More (… ) > Options (the exact menu presentation can vary by Windows version). On the General tab, review the choices for opening File Explorer and the privacy controls for recent files and frequent folders. Microsoft documents these controls, but does not say that clearing Quick access history is a definitive remedy for every blank Home view.

That is anecdotal, not Microsoft-wide troubleshooting policy, and removing those cache files can erase recent or pinned history. Do not start with cache deletion; first check whether ordinary folder navigation works and review the built-in options.

If the problem started after a specific update
Do not remove an update simply because the blank screen appeared sometime after an update. First identify the update and its date: open Settings > Windows Update > Update history. If the symptom began immediately after a particular update and continues after the safer steps above, Microsoft’s recovery guidance includes uninstalling a recent update. The route differs depending on whether Windows starts normally or you need Windows Recovery Environment.
Microsoft’s September 2026 Windows 11 26H1 release notes describe a narrow issue: after the August 2026 preview update KB5120996 and subsequent updates, some systems experienced black-screen or desktop-loading problems, primarily on Azure Virtual Desktop hosts using FSLogix. Microsoft lists manually launching explorer.exe as a workaround; enterprise IT can apply Known Issue Rollback. This release-note example is specific to that version and environment; it does not establish a cause for ordinary consumer PCs or every blank File Explorer window. Work or school-managed devices should be handled with the organization’s IT team.

Repair system files if the simpler steps fail
If the problem persists and you suspect damaged Windows system files, Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker (SFC). These commands require an elevated Command Prompt and are more advanced than restarting Explorer or Windows.
- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. DISM normally uses Windows Update as a repair source. - Then run
sfc /scannow. Keep the command window open until verification reaches 100%.
These tools check and repair Windows image or system-file issues; they do not guarantee that a blank Explorer view will be fixed.

Use recovery options only after backing up
If the issue remains, Windows recovery options include System Restore, uninstalling an update, Reset this PC, and reinstalling Windows. Back up important files before advanced recovery, and check the exact option before proceeding because the effect on personal files differs.
| Recovery option | Effect on files and settings |
|---|---|
| System Restore | Rolls back system files and settings; personal files are not affected. |
| Uninstall an update | Removes the selected update; Microsoft says this does not affect personal files or apps. |
| Reset this PC | Offers a choice to keep personal files or remove everything. Review the selected option before confirming. |
| Reinstall Windows from installation media | Removes everything. Back up important files first. |
For the recovery route that fits your situation, use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guidance. For update-related troubleshooting and backup considerations, see Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
