Usually, no: compressing files is safe when you use a lossless method and need to reduce size or bundle files. Lossless compression can be reversed to reconstruct the original data. Lossy compression deliberately discards information, so it may reduce quality. Before compressing, consider whether the file is already compressed, whether exact fidelity matters, how encryption behaves when files are extracted, and whether the archive is trustworthy.
Does compressing files reduce quality?
It depends on the type of compression. Lossless compression encodes data so software can reconstruct the original. The RFC 1952 specification defines GZIP as a lossless compressed data format and describes a checksum for detecting data corruption.

Lossy compression reduces size by discarding some source information. That can be acceptable for some uses, but it is not appropriate when the exact appearance or contents must be retained. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) recommends lossless compression when fidelity to the appearance of a document matters.

- Use lossless compression for documents, datasets, software files, and records that must remain unchanged.
- For scans, evidence, or working masters, keep an unchanged original and use lossless methods unless the applicable policy explicitly permits a lossy copy.
- Use lossy compression only when its reduction in size is worth the information it discards.
How much a file shrinks depends on its contents and the method; there is no reliable general savings percentage.

Will zipping files make them smaller?
Sometimes, but not always. ZIP can bundle files and folders into one archive, which can simplify sharing even when the archive is not much smaller than the originals. Microsoft’s Windows instructions note that JPEG collections may remain about the same size after zipping.
Files such as JPEG images, video, and audio are often already compressed. A second compression pass may achieve little, and the added archive overhead can make the result larger. Google Cloud warns that gzip provides virtually no benefit for many compressed media files and in almost all cases makes the object larger. That guidance concerns cloud-served gzip; for other workflows, check the resulting size when it matters rather than assuming another compression layer will help.

How do lossless, lossy, ZIP, GZIP, and TAR differ?
These terms describe different things. Lossless and lossy refer to whether information can be recovered; ZIP, GZIP, and TAR describe formats and archive workflows.
Recommended Free Tools
- Lossless compression: preserves data so it can be reconstructed exactly.
- Lossy compression: discards some information to reduce size.
- ZIP: bundles multiple files, with compression applied to individual entries.
- GZIP: a lossless compressed data format, commonly used to compress a data stream or file.
- TAR: a filesystem-oriented archive format that is commonly paired with a separate compression layer in developer workflows.
ZIP, GZIP, and TAR are not interchangeable. Microsoft Learn’s .NET guidance on ZIP and TAR archives explains their distinctions and notes that TAR can carry richer filesystem metadata than ZIP.

Can compressing a file affect encryption?
Compression does not guarantee confidentiality. Microsoft Support warns that, in its Windows zipped-folder workflow, encrypted files added to a zipped folder may be unencrypted when extracted. Confirm how the specific operating system and application handle your files, and verify that the extracted copy remains protected before sharing or storing it. Avoid relying on the archive itself to preserve the original file’s encryption.
Is it safe to open an archive from someone else?
Compression quality and archive safety are separate issues. An archive from an unexpected or untrusted source can expose you to extraction risks. Microsoft’s .NET guidance identifies path traversal and zip bombs as risks in untrusted archives. Use trusted, updated extraction software and be cautious with unexpected files.

If you build software that extracts external archives, do not treat extraction as harmless: validate paths, entry sizes, and resource use. Microsoft’s recommendations are specific to .NET, so developers should also follow the relevant platform’s security guidance.
What should you consider when preserving files long term?
For records that must preserve fidelity, follow the applicable organizational or archival policy rather than assuming any compressed format is acceptable. NARA’s format guidance for specified federal digitized records rejects lossy compression for some records because of degradation and possible unsuitability for archival preservation. Those requirements apply to defined federal record contexts; they are not a universal rule for personal files.

Compatibility matters too. NARA’s historical technical report on digital imaging cautions that proprietary compression can create problems if supporting software becomes obsolete. When such a method is unavoidable for preservation work, retain a way to decompress the files. This is a compatibility consideration, not a claim that proprietary formats inevitably fail.
How to create and extract a ZIP file in Windows
In the Windows workflow described by Microsoft Support, use File Explorer’s context menu to create a compressed (zipped) folder, then extract it using “Extract All” or by dragging files out. Labels and available archive formats can vary by Windows version. The cited support page references Windows 11, version 24H2 for some format and encrypted-archive capabilities, so check the current instructions for your version if an option is missing.
