Figure AI raised $675 million in Series B financing on February 29, 2024, at a $2.6 billion post-money valuation. The round arrived with an OpenAI collaboration and followed a commercial agreement to explore humanoid robots at BMW Manufacturing. It showed extraordinary investor confidence in embodied AI—but not proven revenue, profitability or large-scale production.
Important date check: $2.6 billion was Figure’s valuation after that 2024 financing, not its current disclosed valuation. Figure later announced more than $1 billion in Series C commitments at a $39 billion post-money valuation on September 16, 2025.

What Figure was building
Figure positioned itself as a developer of autonomous, general-purpose humanoid robots for work environments including manufacturing and logistics. The argument is practical: a human-shaped machine could potentially use aisles, workstations, tools and storage systems already designed for people, reducing the need to rebuild a facility around a specialized machine.
“General-purpose” described the company’s ambition and product positioning. It did not mean the robot could reliably perform any arbitrary human task. A demonstration, pilot or staged trial is different from repeatable, safe production across every shift.
What the OpenAI collaboration promised—and left unanswered
Figure said the collaboration would help it develop next-generation AI models for humanoid robots, improve language-based processing and reasoning, and accelerate its commercial timeline. In principle, a language-capable system could interpret instructions and interact more naturally with workers.

- Safe & Durable – Made from child-safe, non-toxic materials, these stretchy robot toys are BPA-free and designed for long-lasting play.
Language understanding is only one layer of a working robot. Industrial deployment also requires reliable perception, dexterous manipulation, balance, motion planning, low latency, safety controls and recovery when an object, person or process differs from expectation. The 2024 announcement did not disclose model architecture, performance benchmarks, exclusivity terms or partnership revenue. Later Figure materials emphasize its proprietary Helix vision-language-action model and physical-world data strategy, so the OpenAI arrangement should be read as part of the 2024 financing story rather than assumed to describe the company’s current technology.
What the BMW agreement actually established
On January 18, 2024, Figure and BMW Manufacturing announced a commercial agreement to explore bringing general-purpose robots into automotive production, including work at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina operation. The companies also identified joint exploration of AI, robot control, manufacturing virtualization and integration, as described in the BMW–Figure announcement.
What it established
- A named industrial partner and a production-site integration effort.
- A plausible initial market in automotive manufacturing.
- An attempt to move beyond laboratory demonstrations.
What it did not establish
- A disclosed purchase order, fleet size or price per robot.
- Fully autonomous, continuous operation.
- Replacement of human workers or a production-wide rollout.
- Positive return on investment or profitability.
“Commercial agreement” can cover evaluation, a pilot, staged deployment or a paid service. The public announcement did not specify which of those outcomes had been achieved.

Why humanoid robots attracted capital in 2024
Generative AI had expanded investor attention from software into physical systems. Humanoids appeared to offer a way to apply machine learning to workplaces already built around human bodies, while labor shortages and repetitive, physically demanding jobs created a large theoretical customer need. Better computer vision, simulation, specialized processors and learning systems made the category seem more achievable than in earlier robotics cycles.
The strongest case for a humanoid is not every factory task. Conventional automation is often cheaper, faster and more reliable when a job is fixed and structured. A flexible humanoid becomes more compelling where tasks and surroundings vary enough that redesigning the facility for a dedicated machine would cost too much.
Where the valuation was promising—and speculative
Reasons investors could believe the opportunity was large
- A capable robot could address many workflows instead of one narrowly engineered motion.
- Real-world operation could generate data to improve perception and control.
- High-profile AI, chip and industrial investors could accelerate recruiting, infrastructure and customer access.
- Manufacturing, logistics and other labor-intensive industries offer potentially large markets.
Risks the financing did not resolve
- Technical reliability: varied objects, changing lighting, balance and error recovery are harder than a rehearsed demonstration.
- Economics: robot manufacturing, maintenance, batteries, compute, connectivity and human supervision determine customer payback.
- Safety and liability: systems working near people need dependable emergency stops, cybersecurity and clear responsibility for failures.
- Manufacturing scale: prototypes must become repeatable products with reliable actuators, sensors, processors, batteries and quality control.
- Competition: Figure was raising capital alongside Tesla Optimus, Boston Dynamics, Agility Robotics, Apptronik, 1X, Chinese humanoid makers and established industrial-robot suppliers.
A polished video can conceal constrained environments, retries, remote supervision or human intervention. Conversely, a robot need not be perfectly autonomous to be useful if supervision is inexpensive and uptime is high enough. The commercial test is safe, maintainable work at a cost customers accept.

What changed after the $2.6 billion round
Figure’s September 16, 2025 announcement said it had exceeded $1 billion in Series C commitments at a $39 billion post-money valuation. That later company-reported figure makes the 2024 valuation historical, not current.
Figure also announced a September 2025 partnership with Brookfield involving real-world training data, AI infrastructure and potential deployment settings. Its official news timeline lists an F.03 arrival at BMW in June 2026; that is a company-reported milestone, and the listing alone does not disclose fleet size, autonomy, uptime, economics or production-wide adoption.
How to judge whether the bet paid off
The meaningful evidence is operational rather than headline valuation. Readers should look for:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Paid deployments, contract types and the number of robots operating.
- Task speed, uptime, intervention rates and performance across changing conditions.
- Manufacturing cost, maintenance burden, energy and compute costs, and customer payback.
- Independent safety results and documented failure-recovery behavior.
- Repeat orders or expansion after an initial pilot.
Neither the 2024 financing nor the BMW announcement supplied those metrics. The $2.6 billion price was therefore a high-conviction venture bet on future capability and market scale, not a financial report card.
The Bottom Line
Figure’s February 2024 financing showed that major AI, semiconductor and venture investors were willing to fund the possibility that humanoids could become general-purpose labor platforms. The evidence then consisted mainly of a strong technical and investor story plus an announced BMW exploration—not proven mass production or profitable deployment. The valuation is now a historical marker: Figure later announced a $39 billion post-money valuation in September 2025, while the harder questions remain reliability, safety, unit economics and repeatable customer demand.
