Connecting Figma to a React design system is less about copying values and more about defining a controlled path from design data to code. Figma variables and modes can represent reusable values and contexts such as light and dark themes; a reliable workflow still needs clear ownership, validation, publication, and review. The exact registry and local guard behind this title are not documented, so this article explains the established Figma capabilities and the decisions a team must make rather than presenting undocumented implementation details as personal findings.
What Figma variables contribute to a React design system
Figma variables are reusable values that can be applied to design properties and prototyping actions. Modes let a collection of values represent alternate contexts, such as light and dark themes. In a React system, the central design decision is how those values translate into code: retain semantic names, transform them into another token format, or generate theme-specific CSS or JavaScript. Figma documents the capabilities, but does not prescribe a React token format. Figma’s variables guide describes variables and modes.

- Keep stable design concepts distinct from implementation-specific component props.
- Decide how modes map to runtime themes and what happens when a value is missing in a mode.
- Make generated names and transforms predictable so code reviewers can understand changes.
How a Figma-to-React synchronization pipeline can work
A practical pipeline can move through these stages: Figma source → extraction → normalization and validation → registry update → generated CSS or React artifacts → local checks and CI. This is an implementation pattern, not a Figma-mandated architecture. A team should identify what its registry stores, which system is authoritative, and how changes and provenance are recorded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Choose the source of truth. Decide whether Figma owns token values, code owns them, or ownership is split by category. State how conflicts are resolved.
- Extract and normalize. Retrieve the relevant variables and convert them into a stable representation. Validation should catch invalid references, unsupported values, and naming collisions before generated output changes.
- Update the registry and generate artifacts. Be explicit about whether the registry is a committed file, a service, or something else. Do not assume the word means a package registry.
- Review and release. If generated files are committed, make diffs reproducible and reviewable. If they are remote, define authentication, failure recovery, and how consumers learn which version is available.
Figma’s Variables REST API supports querying, creating, updating, and deleting variables, and Figma describes integration with CI or synchronization of design-system data. API changes need to be published before other files can use them. Access is subject to plan and account requirements: Figma’s documentation describes Enterprise access, Full seats for write operations, file permissions, and variable scopes. Confirm the current access conditions for the account and workflow before building around them.

Authentication depends on who or what runs the integration
Use an authentication model suited to the deployment context, not simply the easiest token to obtain. Figma’s API access-token guidance distinguishes user-facing apps, organization automation, and individual scripts.
- User-facing application: Figma recommends OAuth when the app acts on behalf of individual users.
- Organization automation: Figma recommends plan access tokens for organization-level automation such as CI/CD. These are organization-managed and available on Organization and Enterprise plans.
- Local individual tooling: A personal access token can support scripts against an individual account. It should not be treated as an appropriate shared production credential by default.
Limit token scopes to the required operations and store credentials in the appropriate secret-management mechanism for the environment. A local convenience script and a shared CI job have different ownership and access risks.
Where Figma’s public React example helps—and where it does not
Figma’s Simple Design System is a concrete public example combining Figma Variables, Styles, Components, Code Connect, and a React codebase. Its repository describes scripts that fetch variables and styles to create a theme CSS file, as well as an icon script that generates React icon components. It organizes code into areas including primitives, compositions, hooks, icons, layout, providers, and utilities.

Why library publication is a separate workflow state
Figma libraries collect components, styles, and variables. Assets need to be published to be used across files, and edits do not automatically propagate to other files until the changes are published. Figma explains this in its library publication guidance.
For a connected code workflow, distinguish a draft edit from a published library change, an extracted value, a reviewed registry update, and a released React artifact. That separation makes it easier to see whether a mismatch comes from an unpublished design change, a stale extraction, or a code release that has not reached consumers.

What a local guard should check
“Local guard” is not a Figma feature with a fixed contract. It describes project-specific enforcement, so its usefulness depends on the exact rules and where they run. A guard might check that generated files match the current registry, validate token names and references, or confirm registry metadata; these are possible rules, not claims about any particular project.
- State the invariant it enforces and show a precise, actionable failure message.
- Document how a developer repairs a failed check, such as rerunning a generator or correcting a token reference.
- Say whether it runs as a package script, editor task, pre-commit hook, or another mechanism.
- Identify the shared CI check that backs it up if local checks can be skipped or bypassed.
A local check can shorten feedback loops, but it is not equivalent to authoritative shared enforcement unless the same rule is also enforced in the team’s release or CI path.

Using webhooks without treating events as synchronization
Figma webhooks can notify an integration about file events, but a notification is a trigger to inspect current state, not proof that every required change has been synchronized. Figma’s webhook documentation says there is no current interface for managing webhooks; creation, modification, and deletion use the Webhooks API.
A receiver should return 200 OK. Figma documents three retries after failure: the first occurs five minutes after the initial failure, the second 30 minutes later, and the third three hours later. Because delivery can be retried, an integration should tolerate duplicate events and fetch and validate the latest file state rather than assuming one event maps cleanly to one completed update.
Webhook coverage also depends on context and permissions. Figma documents different permissions for team, folder, and file contexts, and says files in invite-only folders do not generate notifications. Check the team plan and folder visibility relevant to the files before describing an event-driven workflow as comprehensive.

Decisions to settle before calling the system reliable
- Which system owns each kind of value, and what is the conflict policy?
- How do Figma modes map to React runtime themes?
- What does the registry contain, and how are updates versioned and reviewed?
- Are React components generated, hand-maintained, or a mix? Which changes are covered by Code Connect?
- Does synchronization happen manually, by polling, or from event triggers—and how is the latest state verified?
- Which checks run locally, and which are enforced by CI or release automation?
- Who owns credentials, scopes, publication, and recovery when an API call or generation step fails?
Figma provides the API and library capabilities to support several workflows, but it does not rank them or identify one best architecture for every team. The right design is the one whose ownership, permissions, publication states, and failure behavior are explicit enough for contributors to trust the output.
