Figma is adding a governance layer for AI-assisted design. Announced on October 14, 2026, at the company’s first Config event in India, Figma Specs lets teams describe their design language in Markdown and connect that guidance to canvas files, libraries, code and diagrams. The package also expands Figma’s native canvas agent, moves code layers into public/open beta, adds custom tools and shaders, and introduces a Payload headless CMS integration.
Figma Specs is the new governance layer
Figma Specs is a text-based reference for a team’s design language. Instead of leaving decisions across scattered documents, comments and individual files, a team can record rules, references and decisions in a Markdown-based Spec that agents can consult while producing or changing designs.

How Specs is organized
A Spec can exist as a standalone file or alongside a canvas file. It can reference canvas elements, FigJam diagrams, code layers and existing designs, giving an agent links between written rules and the artifacts those rules describe.

How Figma supplies context to agents
Libraries and guidelines
Design and code libraries provide reusable building blocks, while guidelines explain the choices that are not obvious from a component alone. Together with Specs, they give an agent a central source of truth for brand rules and implementation patterns.
Skills encode repeatable workflows
Figma describes skills as Markdown instructions that capture workflow steps, conventions and specialized knowledge. Examples include generating a library, creating a design from existing components, applying a design system and synchronizing design tokens. A skill can therefore describe not only what an agent should make, but also the order and constraints it should follow.
MCP connects coding agents with Figma files
Figma’s MCP server and the use_figma capability let coding agents work with Figma files and move between code and the canvas. This is different from the native canvas agent: MCP is the bridge for an external coding workflow, while the canvas agent operates directly inside Figma’s design environment.

What the native canvas agent can do
Figma says its native agent can explore multiple directions, perform bulk edits, apply design systems and fill designs with realistic content. The announced examples include:
- Changing typography across an entire file.
- Replacing placeholder copy and imagery with more realistic content.
- Switching component states in bulk.
- Converting screens to dark mode.
The practical distinction is that these are edits to an existing canvas and its system, not just generated pictures. A team can ask the agent to handle repetitive work while people choose among directions and review the resulting file.
Code layers bring behavior onto the canvas
Code layers add coding directly to designs for more interactive prototypes. In the announced rollout, code layers moved from private beta to public/open beta. Users can ask the agent to turn a design into code or edit that code during iteration, creating a design-to-behavior bridge without leaving the canvas for every change.

Code layers are particularly relevant when a static screen does not communicate states, transitions or interaction logic. Their beta status means access, supported clients and capabilities can still change.

Figma says its design agent can create reusable generative plugins and shaders. The resulting plugins and shaders are free to use. Figma’s stated monetization plan is different for creation: once the feature is generally available, prompting the agent to create plugins or shaders is expected to consume AI credits.
That distinction matters for teams estimating usage. Running a created tool and asking the agent to make new tools are not described as the same billable action.

Payload integration adds a content-system path
The announcement names Payload as a headless CMS integration. It is intended to connect design work with structured content managed outside the canvas. Figma has not established availability, eligible plans or commercial terms in the announcement, so teams should verify those details before planning a production workflow.

What is available now, and what can still change
Figma’s agent features have been released in beta stages rather than as a single finished product. The canvas-agent announcement includes wider access, while code layers are moving to public/open beta. Figma has said the agent-to-canvas API will be paid in the future but remains free during beta.

Pricing and eligibility are therefore moving targets. Seat requirements, supported clients, regional access, AI-credit rules and the exact timing of general availability should be checked in Figma’s current product documentation before a team commits to a rollout.
Why this changes agent-assisted design
The package shifts the starting point from an isolated prompt toward structured context: components, variables, libraries, code references and written decisions. That can improve consistency with a company’s existing design system and make an agent’s output more useful for handoff.
It does not remove the need for human design judgment. Figma’s framing is that the agent handles exploration and tedious edits while the team retains control of direction and review on the canvas. This division is especially important while the features remain in beta and their interfaces and billing models continue to evolve.
Figma’s broader argument for agents
Figma chief design officer Loredana Crisan told TechCrunch, “We see Figma as the place where software teams come to decide what they build and ship.” In the same 2026 interview, she said 17 times more lines of code are being produced than in the past while releases have increased 1.3 times. Those are executive-stated comparative figures, not an independently documented study, but they explain Figma’s focus on reducing coordination and repetitive work without separating design decisions from implementation.
