There is no laser type that is best for every material or job. As a starting point, CO₂ lasers suit many nonmetals such as wood and acrylic, fiber lasers are a strong choice for marking metals, and diode lasers can handle selected smaller-scale work on materials such as wood, paper, and leather. The right choice depends on the exact machine, material formulation, and whether you want to mark, engrave, or cut.
How to choose a laser for a material
A laser works only when the material absorbs its energy well enough to produce the desired change. Marking, engraving, and cutting are different operations, so compatibility with one does not prove compatibility with the others. Trotec’s material guide separates those uses and is a useful starting point, not a guarantee for every machine or stock.

Compare the exact material and formulation, the operation you need, the laser source and wavelength, optical power and machine configuration, stock thickness and finish, work area and expected throughput, and the machine’s safety and extraction requirements. A source label alone cannot establish a safe cut depth or processing speed.
Fiber, CO₂, and diode lasers compared
| Laser type | Good starting point | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| CO₂ | Many nonmetals, including wood and acrylic, for cutting and engraving on compatible machines. | Capabilities vary by machine and stock. Bare-metal marking with a marking compound is not direct metal cutting. |
| Fiber | Direct marking of metals such as stainless steel, brass, copper, and titanium. | Metal marking does not mean a fiber engraver can cut metal sheet. It is not a general acrylic-cutting solution. |
| Diode | Selected jobs on wood, paper, and leather, often at smaller scale; some machines also handle particular dark, opaque acrylics. | Compatibility is selective and machine-specific. Do not assume one diode machine’s capabilities apply to another. |
Trotec’s Speedy series compatibility information lists CO₂ for wood and acrylic cutting and engraving. Its material guide lists fiber for marking several metals. These are manufacturer compatibility references, not universal performance guarantees.

Which laser fits common materials?
Wood, paper, and leather
Both CO₂ and diode machines have documented uses for these materials. Choose between them by checking the exact machine’s limits against the stock thickness, work area, and throughput you need. Material family alone is not enough to establish a usable setting.
Acrylic
CO₂ is a broad-use option, particularly for clear acrylic. Diode compatibility can be restricted to specific machines and dark, opaque acrylics; for example, xTool documents engraving and cutting a subset of materials with its F1 diode. Fiber is not a general-purpose acrylic cutting choice.

If any steps are unclear, our online wiki (wiki.twotrees3d.com) provides video tutorials and FAQs.
Metals
Fiber is a common choice for direct metal marking. Some diode products with an infrared source can also mark metals. A CO₂ laser may create a mark on bare metal when used with a marking compound, but that process is not equivalent to directly cutting metal. Confirm the exact machine’s documented application before choosing it for metal work.

Glass, stone, coated products, and plastics
Results depend on the laser source and the particular formulation or coating. Consult the machine’s compatibility matrix and the material’s safety information rather than inferring suitability from a broad label such as “plastic” or “stone.”

Wavelength and configuration matter
“Diode” does not describe a single capability. xTool’s F2 documentation, for example, specifies a 445 nm blue laser for nonmetals and a 1064 nm infrared laser for metal marking. Those wavelengths describe that named product, not diode machines generally. Its F2 FAQ is relevant when evaluating that device; other models need to be checked against their own specifications.
Likewise, rated optical power, optics, work area, and machine configuration affect what a particular system can do. Do not infer maximum thickness, speed, or throughput from the source type alone.

Check safety before processing any material
Compatibility is not the same as safety. Epilog warns against processing materials containing hydrogen chloride, vinyl chloride, halogens, chromium-containing artificial leather, epoxy, or phenolic resins. Its compatibility and safety guidance directs users to check safety data sheets and consult its applications lab. Verify the composition of the exact stock and follow the machine manual and required ventilation or extraction guidance before running a job.

A practical selection checklist
- Name the operation. Decide whether you need a surface mark, engraving, or a through-cut; verify that the machine documents that operation for the material.
- Identify the exact stock. Check its formulation, coating, finish, and thickness rather than relying only on a broad material category.
- Match source and machine. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility table and specifications for the exact model, including wavelength, optical power, and configuration.
- Check the job scale. Confirm that the work area and documented capabilities suit the piece size and expected workload.
- Clear the safety check. Review the material safety information and machine manual, and confirm appropriate enclosure and fume controls before processing.
