Fiber is often the better fit if you need strong uploads or low latency; cable may be the cheaper option in your area. Neither technology is automatically the best deal or the fastest at every address. Check which services are available where you live, compare the broadband labels for the specific plans, and weigh the full price—not just a promotional rate.
Fiber vs. cable at a glance
| What to compare | Fiber internet | Cable internet |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Depends on the address; verify with the provider. | Depends on the address; verify with the provider. |
| Uploads | Often a stronger upload option, but check the plan label. | Can have lower upload speeds than the download speed; check the plan label. |
| Latency | Tested fiber offerings had weighted median idle latency of 8–14 ms in the FCC’s 2024 report. | Tested cable offerings had weighted median idle latency of 13–22 ms in the FCC’s 2024 report. |
| Price | Compare the local plan’s standard price, fees, and promotion terms. | Compare the local plan’s standard price, fees, and promotion terms. |
The latency ranges are measurements of offerings in the FCC’s 13th Measuring Broadband America report, not guarantees for a particular home or connection. Actual results depend on the plan, network conditions, home setup, and the service you are connecting to.
Is fiber faster than cable?
There is no universal winner based on the technology name alone. Compare the typical download and upload speeds listed for the plans available at your address. Download speed affects how quickly you receive files and how well a connection supports simultaneous household use. Upload speed matters when sending large files, backing up photos to the cloud, joining video calls, or streaming live.
Compare uploads as well as downloads
Fiber plans commonly offer stronger upload capability, but that does not establish the speed of every fiber plan. A cable plan may suit your needs if its listed upload speed is sufficient. Use each plan’s broadband label rather than assuming a particular speed from “fiber” or “cable.”

Speed is not the same as responsiveness
Latency measures delay in a connection, which can matter for interactive activities such as online gaming and video calls. In the FCC’s 2024 report, tested fiber offerings had weighted median idle latency ranges of 8–14 ms, compared with 13–22 ms for tested cable offerings. These are report results across tested services, not a prediction for an individual connection or game server.
Is fiber internet more reliable?
“Reliable” can mean different things: whether service stays connected, whether it delivers speeds close to the advertised figures, or whether it performs consistently at busy times. The FCC’s report includes provider-specific comparisons of advertised and measured speeds; those results should not be compressed into a claim that fiber or cable is always more reliable. For your choice, check the plan details and consider the provider’s performance where you live.

Also separate the connection to your home from the Wi-Fi inside it. A wired plan speed and the speed a device receives over Wi-Fi are not the same measurement. Router placement, the device, walls, and other local conditions can affect wireless results, regardless of whether the incoming service is fiber or cable. Google Fiber, for example, explains that its label speeds reflect wired testing with its equipment and are not guaranteed; that is guidance about Google Fiber’s own labels, not all providers’ testing.
Is cable cheaper than fiber?
It can be, but compare current local offers rather than treating a national average as a quote. The FCC’s 2024 pricing analysis reported weighted mean monthly prices for standalone internet packages of $93.91 for cable and $160.34 for fiber. Those sample-level figures describe the report’s analysis, not a universal price ranking or today’s price at your address. See the FCC pricing analysis for context.

For a fair comparison, look at the standard monthly price as well as any introductory price. Account for how long a promotion lasts, what the rate becomes afterward, equipment charges, one-time fees, contract terms, and any data allowance. A lower advertised starting rate may not mean a lower total cost over the period you expect to keep the service.

- Check availability. Enter your location in the FCC National Broadband Map, then confirm availability with the provider. The FCC says the map shows availability, not network performance or affordability. Its guidance defines service as available when a provider can connect a location through routine installation within 10 business days without extraordinary extension charges or delays. Provider-submitted data can be updated, so verify the offer directly.
- Open the broadband labels for eligible plans. Compare typical download and upload speeds and latency. The label is more useful for choosing between actual offers than a general claim about a technology.
- Calculate the real cost. Check the monthly price, promotion duration and post-promotion price, equipment fees, one-time charges, contract conditions, and data allowance.
- Keep wired and Wi-Fi expectations separate. Compare the plan’s listed access speeds first. Then consider provider equipment terms and your home’s Wi-Fi conditions; a Wi-Fi result alone does not show what the wired plan can deliver.
The FCC map is a starting point, not a speed test or affordability tool. The FCC explains its purpose in How to Submit an Availability Challenge.

- Lean toward cable if its local plan meets your speed needs and costs less after fees and introductory pricing are accounted for.
- Choose by the label, not the name if one technology’s available plan has clearly better terms for your household. Availability and plan details can vary by address.
