To find out whether fiber internet is available, check your exact address with the FCC National Broadband Map, then confirm order eligibility with the provider. Installation, equipment, cancellation rights, and return deadlines vary by ISP, so verify those details before ordering or cancelling.
Is fiber internet available at my address?
Availability is address-specific. A provider may serve one home or unit on a street without serving the next, and a listing alone does not confirm that the provider will accept an order for your particular location.

How to check fiber availability
- Enter your complete address in the FCC National Broadband Map. It shows providers reported to serve the location, the reported technology, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds.
- Check the provider’s own address checker and confirm that it accepts an order for your exact house number or unit.
- If the results conflict, contact the provider. Ask whether it can serve that exact address, whether it needs a site survey or construction, and whether the listed service is actually fiber. Keep the response.
The FCC map is a useful starting point, not a promise of performance, affordability, adoption, or an orderable service. The FCC describes availability for map purposes as a connection that exists or previously existed at the location, or service that could begin through routine installation within 10 business days after a request without extraordinary network-extension charges or delays. That reporting standard is not a guarantee of your installation date. If the map appears wrong, the FCC explains how to challenge a listing, including cases involving a denied service request, the wrong technology, a missed agreed installation date, or installation that cannot be provided under its stated standard: FCC Broadband Data Collection Help Center.

The work depends on whether fiber already reaches your building and whether your home has a fiber termination point. A technician may need to bring the connection to the premises, install termination equipment, and connect the provider’s other equipment. The provider should tell you what applies to your address.

What to confirm before the appointment
- Whether your order qualifies for self-install or requires a technician.
- What equipment and wiring the technician will install, and whether an adult must be present.
- The standard installation charge and whether additional construction could cost extra.
- Whether you can choose where the router or gateway is placed.
Ask whether the work is routine installation or requires extending the provider’s network; the FCC’s availability standard distinguishes routine work from extraordinary network-extension costs or delays.
Provider-specific example: GFiber
GFiber says it offers free self-install and professional installation. It says a technician will install a Fiber Jack if one is not already present, and that professional installation typically takes about two hours. A home with previous GFiber service may qualify for self-install. These are GFiber’s terms and estimate, not an industry-wide installation time or policy: GFiber installation FAQ.
Do not disconnect your current internet service until the new connection is working. Confirm start dates and final billing with both providers; overlap and cancellation rules are not uniform.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset

Do I need a modem or an ONT for fiber?
Fiber service uses an optical network terminal (ONT) to terminate the fiber connection at the premises. Depending on the ISP, the ONT may be a separate device, or the provider may supply a router or gateway that combines functions. Device names and requirements vary, so ask what is included and what must remain connected.
For example, GFiber calls its termination box a Fiber Jack (ONT). It says customers can connect a third-party router to the Fiber Jack’s Ethernet port. That setup does not establish what another provider requires: GFiber equipment FAQ.
Can I use my own router with fiber internet?
Often, a customer-owned router can connect to the provider’s ONT, but permission and compatibility depend on the ISP and plan. Check before buying or disconnecting provider equipment.

- Confirm that the ISP permits a customer-owned router and whether its gateway must stay in use for authentication, voice service, or another feature.
- Match the router’s Ethernet WAN and LAN port speeds to your plan. A fast Wi-Fi standard alone will not overcome a slower wired port.
- Check the provider’s guidance for Wi-Fi capabilities and any setup requirements.
GFiber recommends Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, or Wi-Fi 7 routers and specifies Ethernet port requirements for its one-gigabit and multigigabit plans. Those are GFiber-specific recommendations, not universal requirements: GFiber router guide. A Wi-Fi 7 router is an optional purchase only if your provider allows it and your plan and devices can benefit; first check whether the ISP already includes suitable equipment.

Cancellation terms depend on the provider and your service agreement. Before cancelling, check the effective cancellation date, final bill and any prorated charges, remaining promotional obligations, equipment-return method and deadline, and the charge for equipment that is not returned. Do not assume that every fiber plan has no early termination fee.

GFiber says customers can cancel at any time without an annual contract commitment or early termination fee. Its stated policy is provider-specific and may change; check the current terms for your own service.
Do I have to return my provider’s equipment?
Check your provider’s return instructions and deadline when you cancel. GFiber says its equipment is included in the monthly price and must be returned within 60 days after cancellation to avoid a replacement fee. This is a GFiber policy, not a general ISP rule. Follow your provider’s current instructions and keep proof of return.

If more than one provider will accept an order for your address, compare the details that affect both service and total cost:
- Whether the exact address and unit are eligible.
- Advertised download and upload speeds, and whether figures are maximum advertised or measured.
- Recurring price after any introductory period, plus taxes and fees.
- Installation options, appointment timing, and possible construction charges.
- Included equipment and compatibility with a customer-owned router.
- Contract, cancellation, and equipment-return terms.
The FCC map can help compare reported availability, technology, and advertised speeds, but it does not establish every provider’s current commercial terms. Verify price, equipment, and contract details in the provider’s disclosures and service agreement.
