A Raspberry Pi’s electricity bill depends on the assembled setup’s measured power draw and your local marginal tariff; an Indian VPS’s cost depends on its actual monthly charge, outbound-data allowance, and terms after you reach any cap. Compare them using the same stream settings and a 30-day period, then account for reliability and the work required to keep the stream healthy.
Compare the same stream over the same 30 days
First choose the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and FFmpeg workload you actually intend to run. A Pi relaying an already encoded video is not doing the same job as one encoding or transcoding video in real time. Likewise, a VPS with enough listed CPU and memory is not necessarily suitable if its transfer allowance or network policy does not support a continuous stream.

Keep the financial comparison in two parts: recurring operating cost and any upfront cost. For the Pi, include the incremental electricity and any connectivity cost that is genuinely additional. For the VPS, use the checkout amount for the billing period, plus applicable tax and required add-ons. Do not convert the Pi’s purchase price into a monthly amount unless you state an amortization period.
Estimate the Raspberry Pi’s electricity cost
Measure the entire assembled setup at the wall while the intended FFmpeg stream is running. Do not use the power supply’s rated capacity as though it were the Pi’s continuous consumption: recommended supply capacity is a requirement for available power, not a measurement of energy used.

- Run the exact workload and stream configuration you plan to use, including any attached peripherals that you want counted.
- Measure average wall draw in watts with a plug-in electricity monitor. If the network equipment or camera has a separate power supply, include it only if you want its consumption in this comparison.
- Use your applicable marginal electricity rate in rupees per kilowatt-hour, rather than assuming one India-wide tariff.
- Calculate 30-day electricity cost as: average measured watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 × tariff per kWh. This simplifies to average watts × 0.72 × tariff.
For illustration only, 10 W at ₹6/kWh gives 10 × 0.72 × 6 = ₹43.20 for 30 days. Those are example inputs, not a measured Raspberry Pi draw or a national tariff. Electricity charges can vary by state or union territory, utility, consumer category, billing slab, and adjustments. The India-focused electricity-cost guide shows this calculation; use your own meter reading and bill rate.
Raspberry Pi’s official hardware documentation lists a recommended supply capacity of 5 V at 3 A for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5. Those are supply recommendations, not continuous wall-power figures. The documentation also notes that peripherals affect power requirements. Check the Raspberry Pi hardware documentation for model-specific information.

Estimate the VPS transfer requirement before comparing rent
A continuous stream sends data all day, so the VPS’s outbound allowance can matter more than its headline rent. For a constant bitrate over 30 days, a useful decimal estimate is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Outbound data in decimal TB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 0.324

This arithmetic excludes protocol overhead. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Over 30 days, those settings imply about 4.54 TB and 5.51 TB, respectively, before overhead. Do not compare a VPS’s transfer allowance against a lower estimate unless you label the lower bitrate assumption and confirm that it is the bitrate you will actually stream.
Before buying a VPS plan, verify the provider’s current checkout amount, billing currency, tax, renewal price, outbound-data allowance, and what happens at the limit: overage billing, throttling, or suspension. Check whether any add-on is required. A plan with adequate vCPU and RAM but insufficient transfer is not a like-for-like streaming option. A server’s advertised location or port speed alone does not establish that it can sustain your stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide the recommended bitrate assumptions above.

What the Pi-versus-VPS cost comparison leaves out
| Factor | Raspberry Pi at home | Indian VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring bill | Incremental electricity from measured wall draw and the applicable tariff; include additional connectivity only if it is a real added cost. | Plan charge, applicable tax and add-ons, with outbound transfer and post-cap policy checked. |
| Upfront cost | Board, boot storage, suitable power supply, case or cooling, and any camera or capture equipment not already owned. | Usually a recurring rental rather than a board purchase; setup and administration time still matter. |
| Compute workload | Relaying or passing through an already encoded file differs from decoding, compositing, or transcoding in real time. Test the exact workload. | The same workload distinction applies. A vCPU and RAM listing does not prove a particular FFmpeg command will sustain the stream. |
| Network and power | Depends on home upload capacity, power and local network reliability, and the connection under load. | Depends on the provider’s route, sustained outbound delivery, transfer allowance, and traffic policy. |
| Operations | You supply the hardware, power, home network, restart handling, and monitoring. | You still install and maintain FFmpeg and protect the stream key unless you choose a managed service. |
| Likely fit | You already own a Pi, have reliable home power and broadband, and can validate the exact workload. | You need a remotely hosted encoder and have found a plan with suitable resources and enough transfer for the chosen stream. |
Check that the hardware can do your FFmpeg job
“FFmpeg streaming” can mean forwarding an encoded file, or decoding and encoding video while applying filters, overlays, or other processing. Input and output codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio handling, and attached devices affect resource needs. The available evidence does not establish that any particular Pi model or VPS size will run every command successfully, so test your exact command, source, and stream settings before relying on it.

Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings and test first
YouTube currently lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. These are platform guidelines, not a certification that a specific Pi or VPS can encode or deliver the stream continuously.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together; use YouTube’s guidance for the target format rather than assuming a VPS or Pi automatically handles it.
- Set the encoder to CBR and use a two-second keyframe interval where supported, keeping the interval at or below four seconds.
- Use RTMPS where your encoder setup supports it, and protect the YouTube stream key as a credential.
- Test with representative motion and audio before relying on a long-running stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.
YouTube’s own instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See YouTube Help’s live encoder settings.
How to choose for an India-based setup
- Choose the Pi when: you already own it, your incremental electricity cost is low by measurement, your home upload and power are dependable, and the exact FFmpeg job passes a sustained test.
- Choose a VPS when: you need the encoder hosted away from home and can verify both the required compute resources and enough outbound transfer under the provider’s current terms.
- Recheck the arithmetic when settings change: a higher bitrate increases data transfer; a more demanding encoding workflow can change compute needs and measured Pi draw.
Published India-focused examples should not be mistaken for a universal quote. An iTechGuides article dated 2026-10-03 illustrates the Pi calculation with 10 W and ₹6/kWh, yielding ₹43.20 for 30 days; it is an example, not a measured draw or tariff for every household. A separate dated guide reports advertised VPS listings including ₹519 for one provider configuration and ₹880 for a recommended relay configuration. Those are secondary-source listing snapshots, not current checkout quotes or proof that the plans will run your command. Confirm the provider’s live price, tax, renewal amount, transfer, fair-use or post-cap terms, region, and resource limits before deciding. See the India-focused VPS cost guide.
