FFmpeg can retry some failed HTTP inputs, but reconnecting is not the same as resuming a YouTube playlist at the same item and position. First identify whether “Broken pipe” came from reading the source or writing the output. If the HTTP input failed, choose reconnect options for the specific failure and input type; if the output failed, input reconnect flags are unlikely to fix it.
What “Broken pipe” means for this problem
“Broken pipe” indicates that a write encountered a connection that was no longer available. In a streaming command, that can involve FFmpeg writing to an output, while an interruption can also occur as FFmpeg reads an HTTP input. The message alone does not establish which side failed. FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options apply to HTTP input handling; they are not a general fix for a failed output connection.

Check the surrounding log lines and the full command to find which URL or destination was involved. Remove any secret tokens before sharing the command. The exact behavior also depends on what “playlist” means in your setup: a YouTube queue, an HLS or DASH manifest, a local concat list, or a sequence managed by a wrapper.
Choose reconnect options for the HTTP input failure
FFmpeg documents separate controls for different failure conditions. Options for an input generally go before the affected -i URL. This illustrative command is a starting shape, not a tested universal fix:

ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_delay_max 30 -i "$INPUT_URL" ...
Match flags to the observed error rather than enabling retries indiscriminately. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the option definitions.
| Failure or input condition | Relevant option | What it does—and does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Disconnect before the input reaches EOF | -reconnect 1 |
Enables reconnection after a disconnect before EOF. It does not guarantee preservation of a playlist item or playback position. |
| EOF from a live or endless source during an interruption | -reconnect_at_eof 1 |
Treats EOF as an error and attempts reconnection; FFmpeg documents this as useful for live or endless streams. |
| TCP or TLS connection error | -reconnect_on_network_error 1 |
Enables retries for network errors during connection. |
| Selected HTTP error response | -reconnect_on_http_error 4xx,5xx |
Retries selected status codes or groups. Prefer appropriate, narrow choices: retrying an authentication failure, unavailable media, or invalid URL will not necessarily repair the underlying problem. |
| Streamed or non-seekable input | -reconnect_streamed 1 |
Allows reconnect attempts for streamed inputs. Resuming still depends on the server and input supporting the request. |
Set a deliberate retry budget
Long-running retries need bounds that fit the service you operate. FFmpeg provides controls for the maximum retry delay, number of retries, and total retry delay. For example, the command above sets a 30-second maximum delay; it does not set a retry count or total waiting limit. Check the installed build’s help and the protocol documentation before relying on an option or default.

-reconnect_delay_max Nlimits the maximum delay between retries.-reconnect_max_retries Nlimits the number of attempts; the documented value-1means unlimited in the current trunk implementation.-reconnect_delay_total_max Nlimits total retry waiting time.-respect_retry_after 1is enabled by default according to the documentation when a server supplies aRetry-Afterdelay.
Defaults are build- and version-dependent. The current FFmpeg trunk HTTP implementation lists a 120-second maximum delay, unlimited retries, and a 256-second total delay; these are implementation defaults, not recommendations for every installation. Consult the current trunk HTTP implementation and verify what your installed version supports.
Why reconnecting may restart—or fail to resume—the playlist
HTTP reconnection addresses recovery of a resource connection. FFmpeg’s implementation tracks a target offset and attempts to seek back to it; streamed or non-seekable input has a separate opt-in control. A server may reject a resumed request or fail to honor it. Consequently, reconnecting does not establish that FFmpeg can reconstruct a YouTube queue, restore the same playlist item, or continue at the exact playback position.

-reconnect_at_eof 1 means EOF is treated as an error that can trigger reconnection. It does not mean “resume the playlist where it left off.” What happens depends on the URL and manifest type, the server’s behavior, the input’s seekability, and the installed FFmpeg build.
Troubleshoot in this order
- Locate the failing side. Inspect the error and adjacent log lines to determine whether the failed operation concerns reading the HTTP input or writing the output. For output errors, investigate the destination and downstream consumer rather than assuming an input retry will help.
- Identify the input. Determine whether it is an ordinary HTTP resource, a live or endless source, a streamed/non-seekable input, or a manifest. That distinction affects which retry options are relevant.
- Match the trigger. Use
-reconnectfor a disconnect before EOF,-reconnect_at_eoffor EOF on a live or endless source, and the network-error or HTTP-status controls for those specific failures. - Set limits. Choose an appropriate maximum delay, attempt count, and total wait for the service. Avoid unlimited retries unless that behavior is intentional.
- Verify the build and inspect logs. Check
ffmpeg -versionand confirm the installed build supports the flags you plan to use. If seeking help, provide the full command with sensitive URL tokens removed, the version, input protocol or manifest type, relevant surrounding logs, and what the intended playlist represents.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing continuously on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a way to repair an FFmpeg input connection. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on. It supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps as provided, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
