If FFmpeg reports Connection timed out while sending a live stream to YouTube, first verify the exact server URL and RTMPS setting shown in YouTube Live Control Room, then confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. Those are YouTube’s stated first checks for this error; the message alone does not prove that Indian broadband, your ISP, or your router is at fault.
Start with YouTube’s two timeout checks
Verify the assigned server URL and protocol
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and compare the server URL in the current stream settings with FFmpeg’s output destination. YouTube’s timeout guidance says to check that the server URL is correct and that both the protocol and server use RTMPS, not RTMP. Use the endpoint YouTube assigns to your stream; do not substitute a guessed ingest hostname. See YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance.

RTMPS is RTMP-based video delivery tunneled through an SSL connection, as Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation explains. A destination using the wrong protocol or a stale or mistyped server URL can prevent the expected connection.
Check that this FFmpeg build supports RTMPS
YouTube also lists a lack of RTMPS support in the encoder as a possible cause. Check the actual FFmpeg executable you run, including its version and build configuration, and verify its TLS/RTMPS capability against the documentation for that build. Different packaged builds need not have identical capabilities; do not assume support based only on the fact that the command is named ffmpeg.

Capture enough evidence to identify where it fails
Connection timed out by itself does not show whether the failure happened during DNS lookup, TCP connection, TLS setup, RTMP handshake, or later media transmission. Before changing settings, save the full command and surrounding error output. Record the timestamp, exact destination host and protocol, FFmpeg version/build configuration, and preceding log lines. Redact the stream key before sharing logs or asking for help; it is private and should not be published.
These details make it possible to distinguish an address or build problem from a network-path issue. If you report the problem to YouTube or your ISP, include the observations rather than only the final timeout line.

Check FFmpeg and the outbound connection separately
Confirm the encoder is functioning
YouTube’s general live troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that the encoder is working, then testing the outbound internet connection. First verify that FFmpeg starts with the intended input and output and that its logs do not show an earlier configuration or media-read failure. A timeout at connection setup is not the same diagnosis as a stream that connects but sends media YouTube cannot use.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Test the network without over-interpreting a speed test
A speed test can give you an initial view of connectivity, but a good result does not prove that your connection can reach the particular YouTube ingest host and port used by this stream. If available, compare the same FFmpeg setup on your broadband line and on a separate network, such as a mobile hotspot. Note whether the endpoint resolves and whether connection behavior changes. That comparison can help localize the problem, but by itself it does not establish that the ISP is responsible.

Compatible with Windows 11/10/8.1/8, Mac OS, iPad OS, Chrome OS.(Note: Driver is required on Win 7) It can be used in office, school, library and other occasions, compact and portable, easy to carry around.
YouTube advises contacting the ISP if connectivity testing finds an outbound connectivity issue. When you do, provide the timestamp, destination host and port, test results, and relevant redacted FFmpeg logs. “Indian broadband” describes the context, not proof of a regional block, nationwide outage, routing fault, or defective router.
Use port and timeout options only when they fit the failure
YouTube’s guidance mentions explicitly specifying port 443 under its discussion of an invalid SSL certificate. Its separate instructions for Connection timed out emphasize checking the server URL and encoder RTMPS support. Therefore, appending :443 is not a guaranteed fix for every timeout; use the port shown or required by the current stream settings and interpret the error in context.

FFmpeg has protocol-specific connection and timeout controls, and some protocols have reconnection options. Their names and behavior depend on the protocol and on whether FFmpeg is reading input or writing output. Consult the documentation for your installed version and inspect its protocol help before adding flags. In particular, do not copy HTTP input reconnection options into an RTMPS output command as if they applied universally. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes options by protocol.
After FFmpeg connects, check YouTube’s stream health
A connection timeout means FFmpeg has not established the expected connection; it is distinct from a stream that connects but has an ingest or media problem. Once the connection succeeds, use the status and descriptions shown in YouTube Live Control Room to investigate stream health. YouTube documents these diagnostics in its live streaming troubleshooting guide. Do not use a later media-health warning as proof of the cause of an earlier connection timeout.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Observation | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Timeout occurs before YouTube shows an incoming connection | Recheck the exact assigned RTMPS server URL and protocol, then verify RTMPS/TLS support in the installed FFmpeg build. Capture the complete log and compare behavior from a separate network if possible. |
| The URL appears correct, but the connection still times out | Confirm the endpoint is current in Live Control Room, note the destination host and port, and test outbound connectivity. A speed test alone cannot verify reachability to that ingest endpoint. |
| An SSL or certificate error appears instead of a timeout | Follow YouTube’s SSL-specific guidance, which discusses explicitly specifying port 443; do not treat that advice as a universal timeout remedy. |
| YouTube receives the connection, then reports stream or media health problems | Move from connection diagnosis to YouTube’s stream-health statuses and descriptions; inspect the incoming media and encoder output. |
| The same command works on another network but not on the broadband line | Keep the command and build constant, record both tests and timestamps, and contact the ISP with the endpoint and results. The comparison narrows the investigation but does not alone prove the ISP caused the issue. |
