First find out whether the input feeding FFmpeg has failed or the output connection publishing to YouTube has failed. FFmpeg’s familiar reconnect options are documented for HTTP; they are not a general-purpose repair for an RTMP or RTMPS publishing connection. Once you identify the failing side, use the settings that apply to that protocol and check YouTube’s ingest configuration.
First identify which connection is dropping
A typical FFmpeg relay has two separate network legs: an input source, such as an HTTP stream or file, and an output sent to YouTube. An interruption on one side can look like the same symptom in the player, but the remedy differs. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation scopes the commonly cited reconnect options to HTTP, so adding them to a command does not by itself make an RTMP(S) output reconnect. FFmpeg protocol documentation

- Input-side failure: FFmpeg reports that the source URL or connection ended, timed out, or could not be read, while its YouTube output may still be available. Check the input protocol and whether the source itself is reachable.
- Publishing-side failure: FFmpeg reports trouble writing to the YouTube destination, or YouTube Live Control Room reports an ingest or stream-health problem. Check the output URL, key, transport, bitrate, and encoder settings.
- Either side, or unclear: Preserve the complete log around the first failure. The first error is usually more useful than later cascading errors.
Do not share a live stream key in logs or a support request. Redact it, along with any credentials embedded in an input URL.

FFmpeg documents these options under its HTTP protocol. They are relevant when the source being read is HTTP and the failure matches the option’s behavior—not as universal switches for a YouTube RTMP(S) output. Option availability and behavior can vary by FFmpeg build, so inspect the installed binary before relying on a flag:

ffmpeg -h protocol=http
reconnect— reconnect after a disconnect before the input reaches EOF.reconnect_streamed— allow reconnect attempts for streamed, non-seekable input as well.reconnect_at_eof— treat EOF as an error and reconnect; FFmpeg documents this as useful for live or endless streams.reconnect_on_network_error— reconnect for network errors, where supported by the installed build.reconnect_delay_max— cap the delay between reconnect attempts.reconnect_max_retriesandreconnect_delay_total_max— limit attempts or total reconnect delay, where supported.
For an HTTP input, HTTP protocol options belong before the corresponding -i input in the command. For example, the option placement may look like this, but the correct flags and values depend on the source and installed build:
ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_delay_max 30 -i "HTTP_INPUT_URL" ...

Check the YouTube publishing connection
Confirm the destination and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and stream key for the intended live stream.
- Compare the destination in the FFmpeg command with the URL YouTube supplies. If the provided destination supports RTMPS, use it rather than assuming a different RTMP address is interchangeable.
- Check that the key belongs to the current stream setup and has not been changed or mistyped. Treat it like a password; do not paste it into public logs or screenshots.
- If FFmpeg times out, recheck the URL and whether the selected RTMPS destination is reachable from the machine or network running FFmpeg. If it reports an SSL/TLS error, verify that the scheme is
rtmps://, notrtmp://, and follow the port associated with the URL YouTube provided; port 443 may be appropriate for that supplied destination.

Match the encoder to current YouTube guidance
Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings page for the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you actually send. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video support, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube encoder settings
The page’s H.264 examples recommend 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations, not a diagnosis or guarantee that a connection will remain stable. The page provides bitrate guidance by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult its current table for your exact combination rather than reusing a figure for a different format.

Compare the configured bitrate with sustained upload capacity from the network used for the stream. A speed test is only a point-in-time measurement; YouTube advises testing the connection and doing a representative preflight. A bitrate that exceeds reliable upload capacity can contribute to interruptions, but a matching bitrate does not rule out destination, source, encoder, or network faults.
Run a preflight and observe the failure
- Test the same path you plan to use. Start the encoder with the actual input, output destination, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate before the scheduled broadcast. A short test with a different setup may not expose the problem.
- Watch Live Control Room. Check stream health and read any specific error messages while the test is running. Note whether YouTube stops receiving data, reports an encoder problem, or continues receiving while the player behaves differently.
- Check the local side too. If you are recording an archive, confirm its file size is increasing. Monitor audio and video rather than assuming that a process still running means a healthy stream.
- Test failover if you have a backup encoder configured. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection and checking that the player rolls to the backup. Do this during a controlled test, not in the middle of an important broadcast.
- Capture evidence at the first interruption. Record the timestamp, FFmpeg version/build, redacted command, input protocol, exact error text, and the corresponding Live Control Room message.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP input ends or times out before FFmpeg can keep publishing | Input source and HTTP protocol options | Confirm the input is HTTP, inspect ffmpeg -h protocol=http, then use only options supported by that build and appropriate to the error. |
| Connection timeout to YouTube | Publishing URL, network route, or destination reachability | Copy the current URL from Live Control Room, confirm RTMPS support and the supplied scheme, and check whether the destination is reachable on the relevant port. |
| SSL/TLS error | Transport scheme or TLS connection | Verify the destination uses rtmps:// rather than rtmp://, and use the port indicated by YouTube’s provided URL. |
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or encoder warnings | Encoder configuration or available upload capacity | Compare codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance; test sustained upload capacity and repeat a representative preflight. |
| FFmpeg process remains active but viewers lose the stream | Either connection leg, encoder output, or YouTube ingest | Correlate FFmpeg’s first error with Live Control Room health messages and check whether the local archive continues growing. |
| The stream stops at source EOF | Whether the input is expected to be endless | For an HTTP live/endless source, check whether the installed build supports reconnect_at_eof; ordinary finite media reaching EOF is not necessarily a network failure. |
What information is needed for a specific command fix?
A reliable command cannot be prescribed from the symptom alone. The decisive details are the FFmpeg version/build, the full command with the stream key and credentials removed, the input URL’s protocol (not the secret URL itself), whether the failure is on input or output, and the exact log around the first disconnect. Without those details, an HTTP reconnect example may target the wrong side of the pipeline.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, rather than diagnose a particular FFmpeg relay, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
