If your FFmpeg YouTube Live stream looks blurry, first check the actual encoded resolution and frame rate, then match the video bitrate to YouTube’s current guidance for that codec and mode. Also verify the upload connection and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Blur alone does not identify one cause: bitrate, source detail, scaling, encoding, or delivery may be involved.
Diagnose the stream before changing settings
Compare the source with the stream FFmpeg actually sends. Record the input width and height, frame rate, pixel format, encoder, and the encoded output dimensions and frame rate. Check FFmpeg’s logs or inspect the output metadata; a command that appears to request a particular size does not prove that the encoder receives it.

- If the output is larger than a small source, it is being enlarged, not given new detail.
- If the output frame rate is lower than intended, a higher frame-rate setting later in the chain cannot restore motion that was never captured or supplied.
- If source and output dimensions are as expected, investigate bitrate, encoder rate control, connection capacity, and YouTube stream health before blaming the scaler.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream, checking upload capacity, and monitoring stream health in Live Control Room. The guidance below is from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings page, accessed October 3, 2026; its bitrate figures are recommendations, not guarantees of a particular image quality. Use the recommendation for the codec you actually send to YouTube. The following H.264 figures are YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026; they are not universal thresholds, and other codec columns have different recommendations.

| H.264 output mode | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
More motion and fine detail can be harder to encode than a static scene at the same output mode. Treat YouTube’s recommended value as a starting target, then test with representative content and check whether your connection can sustain the stream. Do not copy a bitrate from a different resolution, frame rate, or codec.
YouTube’s current live encoder guide lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS. YouTube also transcodes incoming live video into multiple output formats for viewers, so the quality seen by a particular viewer can reflect the delivered rendition and connection as well as the ingest stream. See the YouTube live encoder guide.

Set FFmpeg bitrate and keyframes carefully
FFmpeg’s generic -b:v option specifies video bitrate, but that setting alone does not establish how every encoder implements CBR. The exact rate-control flags depend on whether you use libx264, NVENC, QSV, AMF, or another encoder. Consult the documentation for the specific encoder and confirm that its mode matches YouTube’s CBR guidance. FFmpeg documents bitrate, maximum bitrate, buffer size, and GOP size as distinct controls; -maxrate requires -bufsize. FFmpeg Documentation · FFmpeg Codecs Documentation.

- At 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames:
-g 60. - At 60 fps, two seconds is 120 frames:
-g 120.
These are frame-count conversions, not complete encoder commands. Do not paste a generic command without adapting the rate-control and keyframe options to the encoder in use. FFmpeg’s option behavior is documented in its command-line documentation and codec documentation.
Scale to a useful output size without inventing detail
Set output width and height intentionally and preserve the source aspect ratio. Downscaling reduces the spatial detail the encoder must represent; upscaling cannot restore detail absent from the source. Verify that the scale filter produces the dimensions you intended by checking output metadata or FFmpeg logs.

No single scaling algorithm is established here as the universally sharpest or a guaranteed fix for YouTube blur. If blur remains after bitrate, dimensions, and delivery are checked, compare candidate filters on the same representative frames at the same output dimensions. Inspect both fine detail and motion, changing one variable at a time.
Run a controlled test before going live
- Inventory the input. Note its width, height, frame rate, pixel format, and the exact FFmpeg encoder.
- Verify the encoded output. Confirm the actual output resolution and frame rate; correct unintended enlargement or a lower-than-expected frame rate.
- Choose the matching bitrate. Use YouTube’s current recommendation for the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate, then check upload capacity.
- Configure rate control and GOP. Set the encoder’s CBR mode using encoder-specific options; calculate a two-second GOP in frames from the output frame rate.
- Test representative content. Include typical movement and audio, and inspect stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Isolate persistent blur. Compare a short local encode with the live output. Change one item at a time—bitrate, dimensions, rate control, or scaling filter—so the result points to a cause rather than several simultaneous changes.
YouTube’s Help page specifically advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

Common causes and fixes
| Symptom or mistake | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Image is soft, especially during motion | Bitrate may be low for the codec, resolution, frame rate, or movement. | Use the matching YouTube recommendation as a starting point and test with representative motion. |
| Output looks enlarged or lacks source detail | Compare input and encoded output dimensions. | Use an output size suited to the source; do not expect upscaling to create detail. |
| Bitrate target seems right but stream varies | Check whether the connection sustains the chosen rate and inspect YouTube stream health. | Run an upload speed test, allow capacity for audio and network variation, and test before the live event. |
CBR was assumed from -b:v |
Generic bitrate, maximum-rate, and buffer settings are distinct; encoder implementations differ. | Consult the selected encoder’s FFmpeg documentation and verify its rate-control mode. |
| Keyframe interval seems to be two seconds but is not | -g counts frames rather than seconds. |
Use 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps for a two-second interval. |
| Motion is unexpectedly choppy | Check input frame rate and duplicate or conflicting frame-rate options. | Inspect the source and output metadata; an output setting cannot recreate missing input frames. |
| Changing scaler does not fix the blur | Blur may be caused by bitrate, source detail, encoding, connection, or delivery instead. | Return to the triage order and compare filters only after those factors are checked. |
