If your FFmpeg YouTube Live stream has video but no sound, first check whether the input file contains the audio you expect and whether FFmpeg maps that audio into its output. Then confirm the output codec and inspect the local recording and YouTube preview. If audio vanishes only when the video repeats, investigate the loop seam separately; that is different from a missing or unmapped audio stream.
1. Check that the source file actually has audio
Play the file locally and inspect the streams FFmpeg detects. A video can contain no audio track, or it can contain several audio tracks where only one has the intended sound. If the source itself is silent, changing YouTube or network settings cannot restore its original music, narration, or other sound.

FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes automatic stream selection and explicit mapping. Start by reviewing FFmpeg’s input stream listing, or use a probe tool such as ffprobe, and note the video and audio stream indexes.

Check the output options for -an, which disables audio recording, including automatic selection or mapping. Also look for -map options that map only video or select the wrong audio stream. When using explicit maps, identify both the desired video and audio streams; FFmpeg options apply to the relevant input or output and reset between files.

For a file known to contain audio, this diagnostic pattern loops the input, maps its first video and first audio streams, and encodes audio as AAC:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative command, not a tested configuration or a guarantee for every file, FFmpeg build, YouTube event, or ingest endpoint. Confirm the current YouTube settings and your FFmpeg build. Keep the stream key private; do not post it in a log, screenshot, or public support request. Test with a private or unlisted stream before relying on a long-running broadcast.
What the looping and pacing options do
-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. Put it before the input it controls, as shown. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.-rereads the file at its native rate to pace packet output, which is useful when sending file-based media to a live stream. FFmpeg warns against applying a low read rate to a true live capture input, where it may cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
3. Verify the audio in FFmpeg’s output
Read the FFmpeg log’s Stream mapping section and output stream summary. The intended audio stream should be mapped to an output audio stream. If it is absent, revisit the input indexes, -map, and any -an option before investigating YouTube.

For YouTube live ingest over RTMP/RTMPS, the current YouTube encoder settings list AAC or MP3 audio; AAC is required for 5.1 surround. For stereo, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular source or FFmpeg build will work without adjustment. The same guidance recommends two-second keyframes, no more than four seconds apart, and constant bitrate (CBR) video encoding. Check the official page for current settings because platform guidance can change.
Stream-copy or re-encode the audio?
| Approach | When it may help | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Copy the existing audio stream | When the source’s audio codec is compatible and you want to avoid another encoding step. | Compatibility and continuity at a loop boundary depend on the source encoding and container. |
| Encode audio as AAC | When you want an output codec listed for YouTube RTMP/RTMPS or suspect the source audio is incompatible with the desired output. | It uses encoding resources and can introduce generational quality loss. It is not a universal fix for every source or loop seam. |
Choose based on the source codec, correct stream selection, available CPU capacity, and whether audio remains continuous across repeated boundaries. Neither method is best for every file.
4. If the file has no audio track
There is no program sound to recover from a genuinely audio-free file. If sending silence is intentional, or your particular ingest workflow requires an audio stream, FFmpeg can generate a silent track with anullsrc and map it alongside the video. A third-party FFmpeg looping tutorial illustrates generating stereo silence at 44.1 kHz and encoding it as AAC. That sends silence; it does not repair missing source sound. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists supported audio codecs, but does not establish that every video-only feed is rejected.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
5. Find where the audio disappears
Test in sequence so you can distinguish a media or command problem from an ingest or connection issue:
- Original file: Listen locally and confirm the desired audio stream exists.
- FFmpeg output: Inspect the output mapping and, if available, a local archive or recording of the encoded output.
- YouTube preview and playback: Check the live preview, stream health, and dashboard messages while the broadcast is running.
YouTube recommends testing with representative sound and motion and monitoring stream health. Its live stream troubleshooting guidance advises checking encoder output, local archives, dashboard errors, and CPU load. Its streaming and network tips also advise allowing sufficient outbound bandwidth, leaving headroom, and using a reliable connection.
- If the source or local archive is silent, focus on the file, selected audio stream, mapping, and encoding.
- If FFmpeg is producing audio but YouTube reports interruptions or errors, check dashboard messages, CPU load, and the outbound connection. Network recovery cannot fix a missing or incorrectly mapped audio stream.
6. If sound drops only at the loop boundary
Audio may be present throughout most of the stream but click, gap, or drift when the file repeats. Listen across several loop boundaries and check whether the source’s audio duration and alignment match the video. If the discontinuity consistently follows the seam, compare copying the audio with re-encoding it. A tutorial demonstrates re-encoding as an option, but media structure and FFmpeg version affect the result, so there is no guaranteed universal fix.

FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer documentation describes configurable retry and recovery behavior for output failures. That can help with some connection interruptions; it does not repair absent audio or incorrect stream mapping, and recovery settings may involve queueing or packet dropping depending on configuration.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No audio in the original file | Source media | Use a version with the intended sound. Add generated silence only if silence is what you actually want. |
| Source has audio, but FFmpeg output does not | Stream selection or mapping | Remove unintended -an; inspect input indexes and map the correct audio stream. |
| FFmpeg output has audio, but YouTube does not | Output codec, ingest, or dashboard errors | Check the output codec against YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance, then inspect preview, stream health, and dashboard messages. |
| Audio cuts out or clicks only as the video repeats | Loop seam or encoding | Listen across repeated boundaries, check source alignment, and compare audio stream-copying with AAC re-encoding. |
| Stream interruptions accompany audio problems | CPU or outbound connection | Review encoder load, YouTube errors, available outbound bandwidth, and connection reliability. Treat output retry settings as connection resilience, not an audio fix. |
