For a fixed playlist, keep one FFmpeg output session open and use the concat demuxer only when the files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. If they differ, normalize them with a concat filter and re-encode to a steady output format. Compare FFmpeg progress and logs with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages before changing settings. Without the command, file details, and logs, there is no single root cause to assume.
Find which part of the stream is freezing
During the freeze, check FFmpeg and YouTube at the same time. This separates a local input or timestamp problem from an ingest problem.

- Watch FFmpeg progress and logs. If frame count and output time keep advancing and FFmpeg continues sending data, the local process may still be running; inspect YouTube’s stream health. If progress stops at the transition or a demux/decode error appears, investigate the input sequence, file compatibility, or timestamps.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Read the stream-health indicator and any error message, including its timestamp. YouTube’s API also exposes stream status and health:
activemeans stream data is being received, and documented health values includegood,ok,bad, andnoData. These signals help distinguish an ingest issue from a local FFmpeg stall. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams - Note the exact transition. Record which file was ending, whether FFmpeg progress changed, and what YouTube reported. Use that evidence to choose the remedy below rather than changing codec or bitrate flags at random.
Use the concat demuxer for compatible files
For a fixed playlist, the concat demuxer reads files sequentially as one input, allowing one FFmpeg output session to remain connected to YouTube. It is suitable when the files expose matching streams, codecs, and time bases; it is not a general-purpose fix for mismatched media.

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'first.mp4'
file 'second.mp4'
The ffconcat version 1.0 line must be the exact first line for automatic format recognition. Quote and escape paths as needed, especially when they contain spaces or special characters. Use the list as one FFmpeg input, and direct the single output to the same YouTube ingest endpoint rather than stopping and starting an output for each file. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Check durations and timestamps
The demuxer adjusts timestamps so the next file follows the preceding file’s duration. If a file’s duration metadata is inaccurate—for example, because it is truncated or unusual—the next file’s timestamps can shift and produce artifacts. Verify the reported durations and, where needed, use the concat script’s explicit duration directive to provide the correct duration. A duration correction can address a timestamp discontinuity; it cannot make incompatible streams compatible.

Use the concat filter when files differ
If files differ in resolution, frame rate, pixel format, audio layout, codec, or whether audio/video streams are present, do not assume the concat demuxer can join them. It requires matching stream properties. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed: How can I concatenate video files?
Recommended Free Tools
Build a filter graph that normalizes every segment to consistent properties before joining it. Depending on the sources and your chosen output, that may mean scaling and padding to one canvas, setting a common frame rate and pixel format, and resampling or mapping audio consistently. Then encode one continuous output. The exact filter chain, resolution, and frame rate depend on the input files and target; inspect each file’s streams first rather than copying a generic graph that may not match them.

| Transition method | Use when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Inputs have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. | Avoids re-encoding, but has stricter compatibility and timestamp requirements. |
| Concat filter with re-encoding | Inputs need normalization to consistent streams or output properties. | Uses encoding resources, but allows a stable, consistent output. |
Check YouTube’s ingest health and format errors
YouTube’s live guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio as the expected format for this configuration. Its error messages also flag issues such as a mismatched video bitrate, unsupported or missing audio, and multiple audio streams. Read the message shown in Live Control Room and compare it with the ingest settings you selected before changing the output. YouTube’s guidance is at Live streaming error messages.
Keep output settings steady across the transition. A file switch should not silently change the output’s stream layout or encoding expectations. If FFmpeg continues sending data but YouTube reports a health or format problem, address the diagnosed ingest issue; if FFmpeg stops advancing, return to the input sequence and timestamps.

The API documentation also describes ingest addresses and supported ingestion types, including RTMP, HLS, and DASH. Treat those details as diagnostic context for your configured stream, not a reason to publish or share a stream key. Never post your stream key in logs, screenshots, or support requests.
Common symptoms and what to check
- FFmpeg progress stops at the file change: inspect the log for demux or decode errors, confirm the next file is readable, and check whether its streams match the preceding file.
- FFmpeg keeps advancing but YouTube playback stalls: check Live Control Room’s health message and the API’s status/health values, if available. Resolve the specific ingest or format issue reported rather than assuming the playlist itself failed.
- Picture or audio jumps at the boundary: compare source durations and timestamps. Incorrect duration metadata can shift later timestamps; verify durations and use an explicit concat-list duration when appropriate.
- The demuxer rejects or mishandles a file with different properties: normalize the inputs through a concat filter and encode a consistent output.
- YouTube reports an audio or video format problem: follow the message, including checks for H.264 video, AAC audio, bitrate mismatch, missing or unsupported audio, or multiple audio streams.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel without maintaining an FFmpeg process at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start the StreamNeo free day.
