For a 1080p, 24 fps YouTube Live loop, use progressive 1920×1080 video, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval: 48 frames at 24 fps. Send it over RTMPS and, if the source has audio, encode stereo AAC. YouTube’s bitrate table does not specify 1080p24; its 1080p30 H.264 row says 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, so those figures are context—not an official 24 fps prescription. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the reference for the platform-specific values.
Recommended settings for 1080p24
| Setting | Use | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Frame size and scan | 1920×1080, progressive, square pixels | Preserves a standard 16:9 frame. Choose padding or cropping deliberately if the source has a different aspect ratio. |
| Frame rate | 24 fps | Set the intended rate at the correct input or output stage, then check the encoded stream reports 24 fps. |
| Video codec | H.264 | A straightforward compatibility baseline. YouTube’s live guidance also lists HEVC/H.265 and AV1 where the encoder and ingestion path support them. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoding. If your encoder exposes separate target and maximum bitrate controls, configure them consistently. |
| Keyframes | Every 2 seconds: 48 frames | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. At 24 fps, four seconds is 96 frames. Check the encoder’s GOP behavior; open GOPs or long intervals can cause stream warnings. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz | Use this when the loop includes audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; its guidance recommends 128 kbps for stereo and 44.1 kHz for stereo audio. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit | Use an SDR path unless you are deliberately configuring a supported HDR workflow. |
| Ingestion | RTMPS | Use the RTMPS ingest URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room and its matching stream key. RTMPS is the secure extension of RTMP. |
YouTube’s live encoder settings table lists H.264 at 1080p30 as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and at 1080p60 as 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. It has no 1080p24 row. Do not treat either 30 fps figure as an official 24 fps requirement. Choose a working bitrate for your content and encoder, then check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and ensure your sustained upload capacity has headroom. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the actual stream. See YouTube’s live bitrate and encoder guidance.

Prepare YouTube Live ingestion
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy the RTMPS ingest URL and corresponding stream key.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Use the RTMPS URL and key in FFmpeg’s output address, with the key appended in the format expected by the URL shown in Live Control Room. Do not paste a key into a public script, screenshot, or shared log.
- Start with a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your channel, and check Live Control Room for incoming video and health messages before relying on a long-running loop.
YouTube recommends RTMPS; its documentation describes RTMPS ingestion at YouTube Help and in its developer guide.

A still image, a numbered image sequence, and an existing video need different input handling. FFmpeg command-line options generally apply to the next input or output, so put each input option before the corresponding -i. FFmpeg documents -r as an output frame-rate option; for image2 inputs, use the demuxer’s -framerate when setting the input image rate. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation and all-options documentation.

One still image
Use the image2 demuxer’s input frame-rate and looping controls before -i. Image2 defaults to 25 fps, so explicitly set 24 for this use. A still image has no audio; if you need sound, add a separate audio input and map it intentionally.
ffmpeg -loop 1 -framerate 24 -i STILL_IMAGE
-vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,format=yuv420p"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_RATE -maxrate VIDEO_RATE -bufsize VBV_SIZE
-r 24 -g 48 -keyint_min 48 -sc_threshold 0
-f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
Numbered image sequence
Use the image2 sequence pattern and set its input frame rate to 24 if each image is one frame in the intended sequence. For example, replace frame-%05d.png with your actual pattern. The sequence’s images should have consistent dimensions, pixel format, and file format. If you want the sequence itself to repeat, use the image2 loop option supported by your installed build; confirm the option with that build’s help or documentation.

Existing video file
FFmpeg’s loop video filter can repeat frames; loop=-1 means repeat indefinitely. For a video with audio, looping only the video frames does not by itself guarantee continuous or seamless audio. Map and loop audio separately if needed, and validate timestamps and the seam with the actual source. The filter’s parameters and behavior are documented in FFmpeg filters documentation.
ffmpeg -i INPUT_VIDEO
-filter_complex "[0:v]loop=loop=-1:size=LOOP_FRAMES:start=0,scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=24,format=yuv420p[v]"
-map "[v]" -map 0:a?
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_RATE -maxrate VIDEO_RATE -bufsize VBV_SIZE
-g 48 -keyint_min 48 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
LOOP_FRAMES must match the number of frames to repeat and may need adjustment to the source and FFmpeg build. The optional audio map includes the source audio if present, but this example does not create an audio loop or ensure a seamless join. For a source already at 1080p24, omit unnecessary scaling or frame-rate conversion if you have confirmed the input properties.

Adapt and verify the illustrative commands
The examples show command structure, not a tested, universal command. Replace placeholders, confirm the installed FFmpeg build has the selected encoder and options, and tailor the filters, mapping, and bitrate to your input. FFmpeg’s -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize expose bitrate and VBV controls for encoders that support them; choose values rather than copying placeholders literally. If the source has a different aspect ratio, the shown scale-and-pad chain keeps the full image visible inside 1920×1080. Cropping instead fills the frame but cuts off part of the composition.
- Check that the output is H.264, 1920×1080, 24 fps, progressive, and uses a two-second GOP (48 frames).
- Check that the encoder’s actual keyframe and GOP settings match the intended interval, including whether it uses open or closed GOP behavior.
- For a source with audio, confirm the mapped audio is present and stereo AAC at the intended sample rate and bitrate.
- For a test, use representative motion and sound, then review YouTube Live Control Room stream health rather than assuming a configured bitrate guarantees a healthy stream.
Troubleshoot common live-loop problems
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| No incoming video | Verify the RTMPS endpoint and matching stream key from Live Control Room. Inspect FFmpeg’s output for connection or encoding errors and check YouTube’s incoming stream state. |
| Buffering or low stream health | Check sustained upload capacity and the configured bitrate. YouTube identifies video starvation when it is not receiving enough video to maintain a smooth stream; lower the rate if the connection cannot sustain it, then test again. |
| Codec, resolution, frame-rate, or keyframe warning | Confirm the actual encoded output—not just the command text—matches the supported codec and intended dimensions, frame rate, and keyframe interval. Review GOP and open-GOP behavior. YouTube’s API lists long keyframe intervals, unsupported codecs, open GOP configuration, resolution problems, and low bitrate among stream-health issues: LiveStreams API health descriptions. |
| Visible or audible glitch where the loop restarts | Inspect source timestamps, frame count, and audio duration. Platform documentation does not promise a seamless source-file loop; seam quality depends on the media and loop construction. |
| Output is not actually 24 fps | Check where -r appears relative to inputs and outputs. For image2 input, use -framerate before that input’s -i; inspect the encoded stream to verify the resulting rate. |
Keep FFmpeg running—or move the loop to the cloud
With local FFmpeg, the computer and network connection running the command must remain available for the stream to continue. A VPS or dedicated host is another possible place to run a process continuously, but the cited documentation does not establish a required hardware specification or endorse a hosting provider. Whichever setup you use, test the specific source, connection, and loop behavior.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Using FFmpeg to send a loop does not grant rights to the video or audio. Use media you own, have permission to stream, or are otherwise entitled to use, and check for music or other material that may trigger a rights claim. YouTube’s live encoder settings specify technical delivery; they do not guarantee that a channel or video complies with copyright rules or YouTube monetization policies. Review the relevant rights and channel rules before scheduling a long-running stream. StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist can help with a pre-stream review.
