For a conventional 1080p, 30 fps SDR YouTube Live stream, use H.264 at a constant 14 Mbps, with a keyframe every 2 seconds, AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, and RTMPS ingest. To loop a playlist, feed FFmpeg an ordered concat-demuxer file, add -stream_loop -1 to repeat it indefinitely, and use -re to pace file playback for live output. The command below is a starting point, not a tested universal preset: inspect your media, confirm the installed FFmpeg options, and test the stream before relying on it.
Recommended 1080p30 YouTube Live settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies different bitrate targets by ingest codec. For H.264, it lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended at 1080p and 30 fps. For AV1 and H.265, it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. These are ingest targets, not a promise that different source videos will look equally good at the same bitrate. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe every 2 seconds, and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

| Setting | 1080p30 SDR starting point |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 (libx264 in the example command) |
| Resolution and scan | 1920×1080, progressive |
| Frame rate | 30 fps |
| H.264 bitrate | 14 Mbps recommended by YouTube; 5 Mbps minimum |
| Rate control | CBR recommended by YouTube |
| Keyframes | Every 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds. At 30 fps, a fixed 2-second interval is 60 frames. |
| Pixel and color baseline | 8-bit, Rec. 709; use a compatible 4:2:0 pixel format such as yuv420p for the example |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz |
| Ingest | RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room |
YouTube also lists CABAC, two B-frames, and one reference frame in its advanced encoder settings. Exact encoder flags vary by encoder and FFmpeg build, so check the documentation for the encoder you actually use rather than assuming the sample command sets every advanced option.
Choosing H.264, AV1, or H.265
The listed recommended bitrate is higher for H.264 than for AV1 or H.265 at this resolution and frame rate. That does not by itself establish a universally better choice: encoder availability, hardware support, and the machine’s ability to encode in real time also matter. The sample below uses H.264 for a conventional setup. If you select another codec, use YouTube’s codec-specific target and verify that your FFmpeg encoder and YouTube ingest configuration support it.

Get the YouTube ingest URL and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the RTMPS server URL and the stream key shown for that stream. Use the actual values displayed in the account; do not use the illustrative placeholder in the command below.
- Keep the key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, rotate it in Live Control Room.
- By default, Live Control Room detects encoder settings automatically. YouTube allows custom stream-key settings when manual resolution or frame-rate settings are needed. Follow the stream’s displayed configuration. See YouTube’s stream setup instructions.
Build and loop a playlist with FFmpeg
1. Create an ordered concat playlist
Make a text file such as playlist.txt with one file entry per line, in playback order:
file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
The concat demuxer reads those entries as one ordered input. Use paths that resolve from the directory where you run FFmpeg, or provide suitable paths. The example command uses -safe 0, which relaxes the demuxer’s path-safety checks; only use it with a playlist you control. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for the installed version’s supported options and safety behavior.

Replace the destination placeholder with the RTMPS URL and key supplied by YouTube, following the ingest format shown in Live Control Room. Keep the completed command private if it contains the key.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -r 30 -s 1920x1080
-b:v 14M -minrate 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'RTMPS_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY'
In this command, -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, while -re reads file-based input at its native rate so FFmpeg does not send it as fast as it can process it. They do different jobs. -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 express a 60-frame interval at 30 fps, or 2 seconds; -sc_threshold 0 disables scene-cut keyframe insertion for a more regular interval. The -b:v, -minrate, and -maxrate values express a 14 Mbps target; verify actual CBR behavior against the chosen encoder’s documentation. -bufsize 28M is the example’s rate-control buffer value, not a separate YouTube bitrate recommendation.

The command is illustrative and was not tested against arbitrary media or FFmpeg builds. The concat input and output settings do not automatically resolve every mismatch. Files with different dimensions, frame rates, codecs, audio tracks, or timestamps may need filtering, explicit stream mapping, timestamp handling, or another playlist workflow. If a clip lacks audio, for example, the audio output mapping may need adjustment. Do not assume concat creates seamless transitions between clips.
FFmpeg options can change across versions. Check the FFmpeg command-line documentation and the documentation for your installed version before launch; input options such as -re and -stream_loop belong before the relevant -i.

Preflight: check media, bandwidth, and YouTube stream health
- Confirm every playlist entry exists and can be read. Inspect each file’s codec, dimensions, frame rate, audio presence, and timestamps; the example does not inspect or normalize your files.
- Confirm the computer can encode the chosen output in real time. Check sustained upload capacity against the configured stream bitrate and leave operational headroom. YouTube recommends checking upload bitrate but does not specify one universal headroom factor.
- Run a test with representative motion and audio, then review YouTube’s stream health messages before depending on the stream.
- Protect the stream key. Rotate it in Live Control Room if compromised.
Copyright, reused content, and playlist suitability
FFmpeg can transmit files you have rights to use; it cannot grant those rights. Before building a playlist, check that you own or have permission to stream the video, music, and other material, including any third-party elements within a recording. YouTube may detect or act on copyrighted material, so a successful encoder connection is not a rights clearance.
Recommended Free Tools
A playlist made of pre-recorded videos is still a live broadcast to viewers, but making content loop does not establish that it qualifies for monetization or complies with YouTube’s channel policies. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for your channel and content. Avoid assuming that permission to upload a video automatically covers continuous live rebroadcast.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open the playlist or a clip | Playlist location, relative paths, quoting, missing files, or path-safety restrictions | Run the command from the expected directory, verify every file entry, and use only a playlist you control if relaxing safety checks with -safe 0. |
| YouTube does not receive a stream | Wrong RTMPS URL/key, wrong stream selected, or an exposed/revoked key | Copy the URL and key again from the matching Live Control Room stream; rotate a compromised key and update the command. |
| Stream health reports bitrate instability or dropped frames | Insufficient or inconsistent upload capacity, or an encoder that cannot sustain real-time output | Check sustained upload capacity and CPU/GPU load, test again, and reduce output demands if needed while staying within YouTube’s recommended settings for the chosen codec. |
| Video is stretched, cropped, or does not match 1080p30 | Mixed source dimensions, aspect ratios, or frame rates | Inspect inputs and add appropriate scaling, padding, or frame-rate filters instead of assuming -s 1920x1080 handles every aspect ratio correctly. |
| Audio is missing or FFmpeg errors on audio | Some playlist files may lack audio or use incompatible layouts | Inspect stream presence and map or create audio deliberately for the actual inputs; the sample’s AAC output settings do not solve absent input audio on their own. |
| Clips do not join cleanly or the loop behaves unexpectedly | Different codecs, timestamps, durations, or stream layouts | Test the playlist’s transitions and end-to-start loop before going live. Normalize incompatible media or use a workflow designed for the files; concat alone does not promise seamless transitions. |
