FFmpeg vs OBS for a YouTube Live Playlist Loop: Which Is Easier?

OBS is the easier GUI-first choice for a YouTube Live playlist loop; FFmpeg suits command-line users who want scripting and custom processing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most people who want to loop prerecorded videos on YouTube Live, OBS is easier to set up. Its VLC Video source gives you a visible playlist and a Loop Playlist control. FFmpeg is a better fit if you are comfortable with command-line tools and want to script or customize the stream. This is a practical judgment based on the documented workflows, not the result of a comparative usability test.

OBS vs FFmpeg at a glance

What matters OBS FFmpeg
How you configure it Desktop interface with scenes and sources; playlist controls are visible. Command-line options and a configured media pipeline.
Looping video Media Source can repeat one file. VLC Video can play a playlist and loop it. Can be configured for automated streaming, but the documented RTMP example is not a universal playlist recipe.
Flexibility Visual setup for arranging stream sources and media. Well suited to scripting and custom media processing.
What you need to maintain For the VLC playlist source, install VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. A working command, correct input and output settings, and a suitable process for your files.
Best fit A GUI-first creator who wants to select files and loop them. A command-line user who values repeatable automation or custom processing.

OBS is the simpler starting point if your goal is a playlist loop without building a command pipeline. FFmpeg may be easier for someone already comfortable writing and maintaining commands. Neither choice guarantees an uninterrupted long stream; test your setup and monitor YouTube’s stream health.

Set up a playlist loop in OBS

OBS places sources inside scenes, and the scene determines what is sent as your stream. For one repeating video, use Media Source. For multiple files, use VLC Video, which provides playlist controls.

Loop one video with Media Source

  1. In OBS, select or create the scene you want to stream.
  2. In the Sources panel, add a Media Source and choose the local video file.
  3. Enable the source’s Loop option if you want that single file to repeat.
  4. Check the OBS preview and confirm the video and audio behave as expected.

Loop several videos with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC before adding the playlist source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  2. In the Sources panel for your scene, add a VLC Video source.
  3. Use the source’s playlist controls to add the files in the order you want.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist. Shuffle Playlist is available but defaults off; leave it off for a fixed sequence.
  5. Check the preview, playlist order, and audio before connecting to YouTube.

OBS’s official media-source documentation describes these controls; the exact dialog appearance can vary by OBS version and operating system.

ZowieBox, 4K HDMI NDI Video Encoder/Decoder, HDMI NDI
  • Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
  • Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
  • NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
  • UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
  • All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

Use FFmpeg when you want a scripted pipeline

FFmpeg can send a processed real-time stream to an RTMP server. Its documentation also demonstrates a FIFO muxer configured to attempt recovery after a temporary network failure. That makes FFmpeg a flexible option for command-line users who need automation or custom processing.

There is no single universal command for every playlist-to-YouTube setup. The right command depends on your files, codecs, desired ordering or transitions, and output settings. Build and test a command for your actual inputs rather than relying on a generic example as a ready-made recipe. Plan how the process should behave if a file ends, an input cannot be read, or the network drops.

Connect either encoder to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the stream you are setting up.
  2. Enter the server URL and stream key in OBS or configure FFmpeg to send to YouTube’s endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure variant of RTMP.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password: it directs the encoder to your stream and allows YouTube to accept its feed. Do not share it publicly.
  4. Start the encoder and check the preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview before selecting Go live.
  5. When finished, stop sending from the encoder and end the stream in YouTube as applicable.

Check settings and stream health before relying on a loop

  • Rate control: YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies CBR.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Upload capacity: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping 20% upload bandwidth headroom.
  • Test the full workflow: Start in advance, preview the feed, check picture and sound, and monitor stream health. If your playlist is long, confirm that its files play in sequence and that looping behaves as expected.

These are YouTube recommendations, not evidence that a particular computer, connection, or playlist will remain stable indefinitely.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose OBS if you prefer menus and a visual preview, especially if you want a straightforward playlist with a loop control.
  • Choose FFmpeg if you already work comfortably in the command line or need scripting and custom media processing.

The ease comparison is an inference from the documented interfaces and workflows, not a measured head-to-head test. Whichever route you take, verify the files, audio, YouTube preview, and network behavior before depending on a long-running stream.
