Only after that should you check whether the audio encoding matches your confirmed YouTube ingest protocol. The available YouTube codec guidance here is specifically for HLS; do not apply it to an RTMP stream without checking the matching requirements.
1. Check whether the VOD contains audio
A file can play video even if it has no audio stream. If the source VOD contains no audio, FFmpeg cannot recover its original sound with a mapping or encoding option. Use a version of the recording with audio, or deliberately add a separate audio source.

In FFmpeg’s console output, inspect the input stream inventory. Look for an audio stream as well as the video stream. If there is no audio stream listed, proceed to a source with audio or an added audio input rather than changing output codecs.
2. Check FFmpeg’s output stream mapping
FFmpeg’s -map option determines which input streams are sent to the output. Read the Stream mapping lines and confirm that the intended audio stream appears in the output mapping. An audio codec option cannot restore a stream that was never selected.

For a single input file where the first video and first audio streams are the ones you want, a typical starting point is:
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
Adjust the input and stream indices if you have multiple inputs or audio tracks. This is an illustrative mapping, not a tested command for an unspecified setup.
You may encounter -map 0:v -map 0:a?. The trailing ? makes the audio mapping optional: FFmpeg can proceed when audio is absent, but the resulting output may then have no audio. Optional mapping avoids an error; it does not make audio available.

3. Understand what -stream_loop -1 does
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping. It repeats the input; it does not create an audio stream, choose an audio track, or guarantee that the audio signal is audible. Diagnose looping separately from checking whether audio exists and is mapped.
4. Confirm the YouTube ingest protocol before changing codecs
Check whether your stream is using HLS or RTMP, then follow the requirements for that protocol. The HLS rules below are not universal YouTube settings and should not be applied to an RTMP setup by assumption.
If the stream uses HLS
YouTube’s HLS documentation specifies muxed audio and video in M2TS, supports H.264 or HEVC video, and identifies AAC audio with one audio track. The HLS setup guidance also lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as audio codec choices and recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1-channel audio. Follow the relevant YouTube HLS guidance for your encoder rather than treating these values as settings for other ingest protocols.

For HLS, Google for Developers’ YouTube Live Streaming API guide, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC, recommends segment durations of 1–4 seconds and sets a maximum media-segment duration of 5 seconds; it supports up to 60 fps. YouTube Help recommends 128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps 5.1 audio for HLS; the accessed Help page does not state a publication date. These figures apply only to HLS.

The HLS developer guide describes segment-based delivery and generally higher latency than RTMP/WebRTC-based ingestion. That latency difference does not explain a missing audio track: check stream presence and mapping first.
If the stream uses RTMP
Do not use HLS-specific M2TS, codec, segment-duration, or bitrate requirements as a substitute for RTMP guidance. Confirm your ingest protocol and consult the requirements for that path; the HLS setup material does not establish RTMP settings.

5. Distinguish a missing track from a silent signal
An output can contain an encoded audio track and still sound silent. Check whether the source contains audible signal and whether FFmpeg mapped the intended track and channels. The documented mapping and HLS compatibility rules establish how to select streams and some HLS requirements, but they do not identify one universal cause for an audio signal that is present yet silent.

If the protocol is HLS, inspect the configured URL, playlist and segment handling, and HTTP responses. YouTube documents errors that can help distinguish an ingestion or request problem from an audio track that is ingested but silent:

- 401: invalid or expired identifier.
- 405: wrong HTTP method.
- 500: server processing failure.
These response codes are HLS troubleshooting clues, not a diagnosis of every silent YouTube stream.

7. Validate a short output before relying on the loop
Before leaving a long loop running, validate a short output locally or with a controlled stream. Confirm that the output has both video and an audio track, then listen to make sure the audio is actually audible. This is a practical check; it does not presume a particular cause or that a command has been tested for your setup.
Common symptoms and what to check
