1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse OBS Studio’s VLC Video source if you want to build and manage a playlist in a graphical interface; use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer if you want a text-file-driven sequence for command-line automation and your media files are compatible. Neither playlist connects to YouTube by itself: you still need an eligible channel, a YouTube Live event, and an encoder configured with YouTube’s server URL and stream key.
How the two playlist methods differ
| Decision | FFmpeg concat demuxer | OBS VLC Video source |
|---|---|---|
| Playlist setup | A text script lists files and directives; FFmpeg processes them in sequence. | A playlist is configured in OBS’s graphical source properties. |
| Repeating the playlist | The concat demuxer documentation describes sequencing files, not a complete YouTube loop workflow. The full repeat-and-ingest command depends on your files and FFmpeg build. | Has a Loop Playlist property, on by default. |
| Important dependency or constraint | Files need matching stream structure, including codecs and time base; duration metadata affects timestamps. | VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear in OBS. |
| Good fit | Repeatable scripted operation when the files are compatible. | Visual setup and playlist management inside OBS. |
| YouTube connection | Both approaches still require an encoder connection to YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key. | |
This comparison follows from the documented behavior of the two tools. It does not mean OBS and FFmpeg will play every media combination identically or that either guarantees seamless transitions.

Prepare the channel and YouTube Live event
Playlist preparation and permission to stream are separate tasks. YouTube’s current account-specific eligibility and interface should be checked in YouTube Studio. YouTube Help says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. These conditions may change.

Choose the visibility that suits the test or broadcast: public, private, or unlisted.
- Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder you will use. Treat the stream key as a secret; reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Prepare the playlist or media source in OBS or FFmpeg before starting the encoder.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview and then select Go live when ready.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an indefinitely running stream will be saved as one complete video.

Build a playlist with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer
The concat demuxer reads a text script and presents its listed files in sequence as though their packets had been muxed together. It is not a media repair tool: the inputs must have the same streams, including codecs and time base. The demuxer uses file durations to position later timestamps, so incorrect duration metadata can cause artifacts or gaps. Its duration directive can override a stored duration when you know the correct value.
Write the playlist script
- Create a plain text file and put
ffconcat version 1.0exactly on the first line. Do not add leading spaces or a byte-order mark if you expect FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically. - Add one
file pathdirective per input, in the intended playback order. For example, the script’s structure isffconcat version 1.0followed by lines such asfile 'clip-01.mp4'andfile 'clip-02.mp4'. Use paths that resolve from the location and environment in which FFmpeg runs. - Escape or quote file names containing spaces or special characters according to FFmpeg’s concat script syntax. The script uses extended-ASCII text, so avoid assuming arbitrary text encodings will be accepted.
- Check the files’ stream layouts and durations before using them together. If a stored duration is wrong, consider an explicit
durationdirective with a verified value.
The demuxer’s inpoint directive can seek into a file, but it works best with intra-frame codecs. With non-intra codecs, packets or decoded frames from before the requested point may still appear.
Choose the right concat method
The concat demuxer is distinct from FFmpeg’s concat filter and concat protocol. The demuxer is useful for file-level concatenation when the inputs are compatible; it does not automatically make incompatible media consistent. FFmpeg’s FAQ describes the concat filter as the appropriate route when re-encoding is needed. Which approach fits depends on the actual inputs and the output workflow.

Do not copy a generic command and assume it will loop a playlist indefinitely into YouTube RTMP. The official documentation covered here does not establish one universal command, option set, or stream-copy-versus-re-encode choice for that job. Check the behavior against your installed FFmpeg build and media, then run a private or unlisted test before relying on it.
Build a playlist in OBS with VLC Video
OBS has two relevant source choices. Its built-in Media Source handles an individual media file and includes a Loop toggle. For an ordered list of files, use VLC Video: it supports a playlist and uses VLC libraries for media support. OBS lists these source types on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Install VLC. OBS will not show the VLC Video source unless the required VLC installation is present.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you intend to stream.
- Open the source properties, add the files to the playlist, and arrange them in the order you want.
- Leave Loop Playlist on to repeat the playlist. It is on by default. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed order; it is off by default.
- Set the source’s visibility behavior to suit the scene. OBS lets the source pause, stop, or continue according to visibility behavior.
- Preview the scene and listen through the playlist before sending it to YouTube.
OBS documents playlist, loop, shuffle, and visibility controls, but does not promise seamless transitions or identical playback for every codec and file combination.

Check the feed before and after going live
- Confirm that the files appear in the intended order and that looping or shuffle is set as intended.
- Listen for missing, unexpectedly quiet, or interrupted audio as files change.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before making a scheduled event live.
- After launch, confirm that the stream is reachable from the channel and watch pages, and monitor audio and video quality.
- For unattended operation, plan how you will notice a stopped encoder or a dropped connection and restore the feed. A playlist alone does not guarantee uninterrupted transmission, automatic reconnection, uninterrupted archiving, or 24/7 availability.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
OBS does not show VLC Video
The VLC dependency is missing or not available to OBS. Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list again.

Check whether the files have the same streams, codecs, and time base. Also verify their duration metadata: the demuxer uses durations to calculate later timestamps, and inaccurate values can create gaps or artifacts.
The YouTube preview does not appear
Check that the encoder is using the correct YouTube Live server URL and stream key, and confirm that the event is ready in Live Control Room. If this is the channel’s first activation, YouTube says it can take up to 24 hours.

The stream stops while the playlist is still configured
A playlist is media input, not an uninterrupted-delivery guarantee. Check whether the encoder is still running and whether the connection is active; have an operator or recovery plan available for a long-running stream.
The stream is live, but the archive is incomplete or absent
YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on one indefinitely running stream to produce one complete archive.
