FFmpeg Bitrate Settings for a 24/7 Devotional Stream on a VPS in India

A practical YouTube Live starting point for FFmpeg on an India VPS: 720p30 H.264 at 3 Mbps, two-second keyframes, AAC stereo, plus VPS testing and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a YouTube Live devotional stream with a static or low-motion visual, start at 720p30 with H.264 video at 3 Mbps, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, and a keyframe every two seconds. At 30 fps, set the GOP to 60 frames. These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest settings, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or network route in India can sustain them; test from the VPS and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on it.

Recommended YouTube settings for a devotional stream

The right bitrate depends on the destination, codec, resolution and frame rate. The figures below are for YouTube Live using H.264; if you stream to another platform, use its ingest specifications instead. YouTube Help’s encoder table gives recommended—not guaranteed—targets, and its retrieved page does not state the table’s publication or update year.

Setting 720p30 starting point 1080p30 option
Video codec H.264 via libx264 H.264 via libx264
Video bitrate 3 Mbps, as recommended by YouTube Help 8 Mbps, as recommended by YouTube Help
Rate control CBR CBR
Frame rate and keyframe interval 30 fps; keyframe every 2 seconds (60 frames) 30 fps; keyframe every 2 seconds (60 frames)
Audio AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance supports AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends 128 kbps for stereo audio and 44.1 kHz for stereo. For the example here, use AAC as shown in the command below.

Choose resolution and bitrate for your source

720p30: a conservative starting point

For a devotional stream built around a still image, text, or slow visual movement, 720p30 is a practical initial target. YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for that format is 3 Mbps video. A static image may not need as much bitrate to look clean as detailed moving footage, but that does not change YouTube’s published recommendation or prove that a lower rate will work well for every source.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

1080p30: use it when the extra detail is useful

If the source has fine detail or you specifically want to deliver 1080p, YouTube’s recommended H.264 video target at 1080p30 is 8 Mbps. That requires substantially more sustained outbound capacity than 720p30. Choose based on visual detail, likely viewer devices and connections, and what the VPS can actually send continuously—not on resolution alone.

Check the VPS before committing

At 720p30, 3 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio is 3.128 Mbps before transport overhead. Allow additional headroom for overhead and bitrate variation; there is no universal India-specific margin established here. A VPS plan’s advertised connection speed does not by itself establish sustained outbound capacity on your route to YouTube. YouTube Help advises users to test upload bitrate and monitor stream health. Run a representative test from the actual VPS and review the platform’s health indicators before treating the setup as production-ready.

Adapt this FFmpeg settings fragment

This is an illustrative fragment, not a complete command guaranteed to fit every input. It assumes a looping MP4, 720p30 YouTube Live H.264 ingest, and audio present in the same file. Replace the ingest address and stream key with the values provided in YouTube Studio’s live control room; use RTMPS as YouTube recommends. Keep the stream key private: do not publish it, expose it in shared scripts, or print it into logs.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i devotional.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "rtmps://<platform-ingest>/<stream-key>"

What the key options do

  • -re reads the input at its native rate rather than sending the file as fast as possible.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. It does not automatically combine separate audio files or manage a multi-file playlist.
  • -c:v libx264 encodes video as H.264. -preset veryfast trades some compression efficiency for lower encoding demand; confirm the VPS CPU can keep up.
  • -r 30 targets 30 fps. If the source has a different frame rate, consider whether conversion is appropriate rather than assuming this setting is right for it.
  • -b:v 3000k sets the target video bitrate to 3,000 kilobits per second. FFmpeg expresses bitrate as bits per second, so 3 Mbps can be written as 3000k or 3000000.
  • -maxrate 3000k and -bufsize 6000k define a constrained-rate target and buffer for this example; they do not increase the VPS’s available bandwidth.
  • -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, which at 30 fps corresponds to a keyframe every two seconds.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 selects AAC audio, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz and two channels.
  • -f flv selects the container used for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. The URL shown is only a placeholder, not a working ingest address.

For a 1080p30 target, change the video bitrate options to YouTube’s 8 Mbps recommendation and ensure the input is actually scaled or encoded to the intended dimensions. No scale filter is included because the source dimensions and frame rate are unknown. FFmpeg’s bitrate, GOP, audio and libx264 options are documented in the FFmpeg documentation.

Test the stream and troubleshoot common failures

  1. Confirm the source. Check that the file exists, plays correctly and contains the expected audio and video streams. If audio is separate, map it explicitly; the example command assumes audio and video are in one input.
  2. Run a short live test from the VPS. Use the intended resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Confirm FFmpeg is encoding in real time and that the VPS is not exhausting CPU resources.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream health. If health warnings or interruptions appear, compare the measured outbound capacity with the stream’s bitrate plus overhead and inspect the VPS’s network route and sustained egress.
  4. Verify the ingest details. If YouTube does not receive the stream, confirm the RTMPS address and stream key in the live control room. Never share the key; regenerate it if it has been exposed.
  5. Check the picture and sound. Confirm the source’s aspect ratio, dimensions, frame rate and audio layout match your intended output. Apply scaling, frame-rate conversion or explicit stream mapping only after identifying the source format.
  • Connection drops or unstable health: the VPS may not sustain the required outbound rate. Test from that VPS and consider a lower resolution or bitrate, then test again.
  • Encoder falls behind: encoding may exceed available CPU. Try a faster preset or reduce encoding workload; if media is already encoded appropriately, investigate whether stream-copying is suitable for that input and destination.
  • No audio or wrong channel layout: inspect the input streams and adjust audio mapping and channel settings. The example assumes a stereo track in the input.
  • Stream stops at the end of the file: check that the input is compatible with -stream_loop -1 and that FFmpeg remains running. For a playlist or separate audio/video sources, construct and test the actual input arrangement rather than relying on this single-file fragment.
  • Keyframe or ingest warning: confirm the output is 30 fps with -g 60 for the two-second interval, and verify the destination’s current ingest requirements.

Keep the devotional content eligible and rights-safe

Technical settings do not grant permission to broadcast the material. Before streaming, check that you have the necessary rights for the recording, music, lyrics, artwork, photographs and any other included material. A devotional subject does not make a recording or composition automatically free to use. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies for your channel and content; do not assume that looping or lightly changing existing material makes it original or eligible for monetization. Keep records of licenses and permissions, and use the copyright safety checklist as a practical review aid.
