Ferroelectric RAM vs. Flash Memory: Write Speed, Endurance, and Data Retention

TI’s MSP430 examples show faster typical FRAM writes and far higher specified endurance than the cited flash examples, but retention and device ratings depend on exact parts and test conditions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Texas Instruments’ MSP430 examples, FRAM writes are reported at about 2 MB/s typical, compared with about 14 kB/s typical for flash when erase time is included. TI also specifies 1015 write/erase cycles for its MSP430 FRAM, versus about 105 typical cycles for its MSP430 flash examples. Those figures make FRAM compelling for frequent, fast updates in that device family—but they are not universal benchmarks. Retention depends on the exact part, temperature, and qualification conditions, so the choice should be based on the datasheets for the devices you are considering.

What FRAM and flash do differently

Ferroelectric RAM (FRAM) and flash memory both retain data without continuous power, but their write behavior differs. In the MSP430 family discussed by TI, FRAM is directly addressable and does not use the flash-style segmented erase-before-write workflow. Flash programming can involve erase time as well as the time to program data. That distinction matters when comparing effective application writes: a raw access specification is not the same thing as the time required to erase and update a stored value.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

TI’s 2014 MSP430 FRAM Quality and Reliability report summarizes the implementation point simply: “FRAM does not require an erase before a write.” In the compared MSP430 family, avoiding that pre-erase step helps explain why the reported effective write throughput is so different. It does not mean that every FRAM-based system will complete every application update at the same rate: the device, access size, interface, and software path still matter.

Neither name describes one uniform product. FRAM and flash parts vary by manufacturer, architecture, capacity, interface, and rated operating conditions. The numerical comparison in this article is specifically about TI’s MSP430 examples, not a claim that every FRAM device will outperform every flash device.

How much faster are writes in the cited MSP430 examples?

TI’s 2014 MSP430 FRAM Quality and Reliability report gives typical FRAM write speeds above 2 MB/s and approximately 14 kB/s for MSP430 flash when erase time is included. These are family-specific examples. They illustrate how erase overhead can affect effective write throughput, rather than establishing a general benchmark for standalone memory chips or all flash technologies.

The distinction between the figures matters. An application-level throughput figure that includes erase time incorporates work beyond the memory’s programming operation alone. A device specification for a particular write operation may describe a narrower interval and may depend on the word size and operating conditions. The two figures are useful context, but should not be treated as interchangeable measures of every real workload.

For a system designer, the practical question is not merely “How fast can the memory accept a write?” It is “How long does the system take to make the required update usable?” Depending on the part and implementation, a measured update may include preparing or erasing a region, transferring data over a bus, controller or software work, and obeying page or program constraints. The TI throughput comparison explicitly includes erase time for its flash figure; it does not report one universal timing for all those other elements. Use the same end-to-end definition when comparing candidate parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A device-level specification is not a system benchmark

TI’s MSP430FR5722 product page lists a 125 ns-per-word write specification: MSP430FR5722 product information. That is a specification for that device and operation. It is not directly comparable to the report’s erase-inclusive throughput figures without matching details such as workload, access pattern, and interface. Check the relevant device datasheet when estimating the time for an actual application.

In particular, a per-word timing and a throughput expressed in bytes per second answer different questions. A word specification names an operation at a particular granularity; a throughput figure summarizes data movement over some interval and may include additional work. Do not multiply or divide one into the other and assume the result predicts a complete application update unless the memory organization, access sequence, and measurement conditions align.

What to include in an application estimate

For a useful throughput estimate, count the complete path from the application’s request to a completed, usable update. Depending on the candidate device and system, that may include erase and setup time, controller or software overhead, bus transfer time, and page or program constraints. The cited TI comparison establishes that including erase time changes the MSP430 flash figure; it does not quantify those other costs for every system.

  • Identify whether the published number measures a raw write operation or a sequence that includes erase.
  • Match the access size and pattern to the application rather than assuming a single word write represents a larger update.
  • Check the candidate device’s memory map, controller, and software requirements when estimating total system time.
  • Use the same units and timing boundary for both candidates: for example, compare complete updates with complete updates rather than a raw operation on one side and an erase-inclusive figure on the other.
  • Consider the frequency of updates as well as their size. An occasional bulk update and a steady stream of small changes may interact differently with device constraints.

These checks help identify whether the headline difference is material to the product. If the application rarely writes data, peak write throughput may be less important than capacity, retention at the intended temperature, or overall system fit. If updates are frequent or time-critical, the erase-inclusive timing and the device’s actual write behavior deserve closer examination.

How endurance differs—and why FRAM reads matter

TI’s 2014 MSP430 report specifies 1015 write/erase cycles for MSP430 FRAM and describes about 105 write or erase cycles as typical for its MSP430 flash examples. These are family- and specification-specific values, not guaranteed limits for all FRAM or flash products.

There is an important asymmetry in how TI describes the workloads: an MSP430 FRAM read is accompanied by a write-back, so reads affect FRAM endurance as well as writes. For flash, the report says endurance is affected by write access. As a result, the cycle figures should not be compared as though a read has the same endurance effect in both memory types. A read-heavy workload, in particular, should not be evaluated using only its number of explicit application writes when considering the MSP430 FRAM behavior described by TI.

TI describes the 1015 FRAM value as a specified minimum based on testing; the report says there is no known FRAM fail limit in its account. It is therefore not an observed point at which every device fails, nor a promise that a system can perform that many arbitrary application operations without other limits. Consult the precise device’s endurance definition and use conditions.

Similarly, the approximately 105 figure is a typical value for the cited MSP430 flash examples, not a universal flash rating or a lifetime for a whole product. Endurance specifications are meaningful only alongside their definition: which locations are being exercised, what counts as a cycle, and which operations contribute. Do not transfer the MSP430 figures to unrelated memory products without confirming their specifications.

Estimate endurance from the workload, not a headline number

Start by identifying the memory locations that receive the most activity. A workload that distributes updates evenly across an available region differs from one that repeatedly updates a small hot spot. For FRAM, include reads in the access count described by TI; for flash, account for the write and erase behavior specified for the selected part.

An endurance estimate should begin with the application’s real access pattern, not an average that hides the most frequently used location. If one record or counter is updated much more often than the rest of the stored data, its activity may be the relevant part of the workload to compare with the device rating. The source material does not provide a universal formula for turning a cycle rating into service years; the calculation depends on access frequency, distribution, and the exact rating definition.

  1. List the application’s reads, writes, and erase operations, including how often each occurs.
  2. Map those operations to the actual locations they affect. Identify hot spots rather than averaging activity across the entire memory without evidence.
  3. Use the exact part’s datasheet to determine which operations count against its endurance rating and under what conditions.
  4. Compare the resulting workload with the device’s stated rating, preserving any conditions or qualifications in that specification.
  5. Revisit the estimate if the software, update rate, or way data is distributed across memory changes; a cycle rating cannot be interpreted independently of the workload.

This process is more meaningful than converting a cycle count directly into years of service without knowing the access rate, access distribution, and endurance definition. It also prevents a common comparison error: treating a FRAM read and a flash read as equivalent for endurance merely because both are called “reads” at the application level.

Data retention: nonvolatile does not mean one fixed lifetime

Both memory types are nonvolatile, but that word alone does not specify how long a device retains data without power. Retention depends on the part and its temperature and test conditions. The TI material does not establish a universal retention winner for FRAM versus flash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retention is a separate decision axis from write speed and endurance. A device may be attractive for frequent updates and still require close examination of its retention specification at the system’s expected storage temperature. Conversely, a retention value quoted under an accelerated test should not be treated as a direct, qualified lifetime claim unless the manufacturer says it is qualified for that part and those conditions.

MSP430 FRAM retention testing

TI’s FRAM quality report says MSP430 retention testing uses a cumulative bake time of 1,000 hours at 125°C. That describes a test flow, not a general claim that every FRAM device retains data for a fixed number of years. TI directs readers to the individual device datasheet for its retention specification. See the FRAM quality and reliability report and verify the rating for the exact part.

The distinction between a test method and a product rating is important. A stated time and temperature describe how data retention is evaluated in the report; they are not themselves a simple conversion into years of field storage. Use the datasheet’s actual retention specification for the selected device, and make sure its conditions correspond to the system’s expected storage and operating temperatures.

MSP430 flash values are tied to a particular test case

TI’s 2018 report, Understanding MSP430 Flash Data Retention, gives temperature-dependent values associated with a 170°C, 420-hour test case. Its table lists about 100 years at 25°C and approximately two years at 85°C for that case. TI cautions that the plotted values do not by themselves represent qualified MSP430 flash performance; further tests are used for qualification. These are not universal lifetime promises and cannot, on their own, settle a FRAM-versus-flash comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Temperature is not a footnote in a retention comparison: the same cited flash table illustrates substantially different values at 25°C and 85°C. Compare retention ratings for the actual operating and storage temperatures in your system, and distinguish qualified specifications from values presented for a test case or accelerated-test curve.

When reviewing a retention claim, record the temperature, test method, and qualification status alongside the number. A claim without those details is not enough to establish that one memory type will preserve data longer in a specific product. The cited TI FRAM and flash documents use different test descriptions, so their figures should not be placed side by side as though they were generated by one common test and directly rank the technologies.

Compare candidate devices on equal terms

When choosing between an MCU with FRAM and one with flash, compare exact parts and intended workloads rather than relying on technology labels alone. TI’s article FRAM or Flash: How to Select the Right MCU for Your Application frames the decision in those MCU terms. The following questions help make a specific comparison:

Comparison area What to verify Why it changes the decision
Effective write throughput Whether erase, setup, controller, bus, and page or program constraints are included in the figure. A raw operation specification and an erase-inclusive application figure do not describe the same work.
Endurance Which operations count, including whether reads or erase/write sequences affect the rating, and how activity is distributed across locations. A headline cycle count is useful only when its definition and your workload match.
Retention The exact device’s rated retention, test conditions, temperature assumptions, and qualification status. Nonvolatile status and accelerated-test values alone do not establish a part’s qualified retention for your conditions.
System fit Capacity, memory map, access granularity, power during writes, controller and software support, and total system cost. A memory’s speed or endurance advantage is only useful if the surrounding system can use it. TI’s cited documents do not provide a complete cross-vendor cost or capacity comparison.

For a fair comparison, use current datasheets for the exact candidate parts and write down the assumptions behind each number. The 2 MB/s and 14 kB/s figures from TI’s MSP430 report use a specific family and distinguish an erase-inclusive flash figure. The 125 ns-per-word MSP430FR5722 specification describes a device-level operation. Keeping those descriptions attached to the numbers avoids making a persuasive but misleading apples-to-oranges table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also establish what the application needs rather than selecting from a headline advantage alone. Capacity, memory map, access granularity, power during writes, controller and software support, and total system cost all affect suitability. The cited TI materials do not provide a complete cross-vendor price or capacity comparison, so those questions require current information for the actual parts under consideration.

Which should you choose?

FRAM is a strong candidate for frequent updates

Consider an FRAM-equipped device when the workload benefits from direct writes without the compared MSP430 flash erase-before-write workflow, or when frequent updates make endurance a central requirement. The TI MSP430 examples show why: reported typical write throughput above 2 MB/s for FRAM versus approximately 14 kB/s for flash including erase, and a specified FRAM endurance of 1015 write/erase cycles versus about 105 typical cycles for the flash examples. Those advantages should be weighed against the selected part’s capacity, system requirements, and datasheet limits.

FRAM may be especially worth evaluating when updates are frequent enough that effective write time or endurance is a design concern. But include the access pattern: in TI’s MSP430 description, reads also affect FRAM endurance because they involve write-back. Confirm that the exact part’s rated retention meets the system’s temperature and storage requirements rather than assuming that high endurance answers the retention question.

Flash remains a viable choice when its exact part fits

Do not reject flash based on the MSP430 example alone. Its effective write time depends on the complete erase-and-program behavior of the device and workload, and its retention must be assessed from the relevant qualified specifications. A particular flash part may fit the application’s update frequency, timing, capacity, and system constraints; the cited sources do not establish a cross-market comparison that would decide this for every device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an application with modest update demands, a flash device that satisfies the required throughput, endurance, and retention conditions may be suitable. The right conclusion comes from the exact part’s specifications and the application’s workload, not from generalizing one family’s typical figures to all flash products. Likewise, do not assume that a favorable FRAM speed or endurance figure automatically resolves capacity, support, or total-cost requirements.

Use this final check before committing

  • Compare the exact candidate parts, not generic FRAM and flash categories.
  • Use throughput values with matched definitions, especially whether erase time is included.
  • Estimate endurance using the real access pattern and each vendor’s definition of a counted cycle.
  • Include FRAM reads in the endurance analysis where the selected device behaves as described in TI’s MSP430 report.
  • Check qualified retention ratings at the system’s intended temperatures rather than treating test conditions as a lifetime guarantee.
  • Confirm capacity, memory-map fit, access granularity, write-power requirements, controller and software support, and total system cost in current device documentation.

In short, use the MSP430 results as a concrete illustration of how avoiding erase time can improve effective writes and how endurance specifications can differ—not as a substitute for evaluating the devices that will actually go into the product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FRAM faster than flash memory?

In TI’s MSP430 examples, typical FRAM write speed is reported above 2 MB/s, while MSP430 flash is about 14 kB/s when erase time is included. This is a vendor- and family-specific comparison, not a universal ranking of all FRAM and flash products.

Why can the cited FRAM writes be faster?

TI attributes the advantage in the compared MSP430 implementation partly to avoiding flash’s erase-before-write bottleneck. FRAM is directly addressable in that family, while the reported flash throughput includes erase time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which memory has higher endurance?

TI specifies 1015 write/erase cycles for MSP430 FRAM and reports about 105 typical cycles for its MSP430 flash examples. Check exact-part specifications: the figures are family-specific, and TI notes that MSP430 FRAM reads involve write-back and therefore affect endurance too.

Does FRAM retain data longer than flash?

The cited TI documents do not establish a universal retention winner. MSP430 FRAM retention testing uses a cumulative 1,000 hours at 125°C, while TI’s flash report presents temperature-dependent test-case values and cautions that further tests are used for qualification. Compare qualified ratings for the exact devices and temperatures.

Can I convert an endurance or retention figure directly into years?

Not without the conditions and workload behind the rating. Endurance depends on access frequency, hot spots, and which operations count. Retention depends on device, temperature, test assumptions, and qualification; accelerated-test figures alone are not necessarily a qualified lifetime promise.

The Bottom Line

TI’s MSP430 figures show a substantial FRAM advantage in reported typical write throughput and specified endurance, but they do not settle every device comparison. Match write-timing definitions, include the operations that count against endurance, and compare qualified retention ratings at the temperatures your system will actually face. Then weigh capacity, system support, power, and cost for the exact parts.
