Feed The Beast Launcher Guide: How to Play and Host FTB Modpacks

A practical guide to the official FTB App, matching client and server versions, installing FTB server files, home port forwarding, rented hosting, backups and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the official FTB App to install and update Feed The Beast modpacks, and use the matching server installer from FTB’s Server Files page when you host. The two rules that prevent most failures are simple: install the exact same pack version on every client and the server, and follow the Java and memory requirements published for that specific pack. Home hosting costs no monthly fee but requires a computer to stay on and a carefully configured forwarded port; rented hosting is easier to keep online and usually offers one-click installation.

What the FTB App does

The FTB App is Feed The Beast’s official launcher for downloading, updating and starting FTB modpacks. Get it from feed-the-beast.com/ftb-app rather than relying on an old guide written for a different launcher. FTB ended its partnership with CurseForge, so current FTB updates are distributed through FTB’s own app and website.

The app manages the mod files, configuration files and game instances for supported packs. You still need a legitimate Minecraft account: add that account in the launcher before starting a pack or connecting to a server.

Install the FTB App

Windows

  1. Open the official FTB App page and download the Windows installer.
  2. Run the downloaded installer and follow the setup prompts.
  3. Leave Run FTBApp selected on the final screen and click Finish.
  4. Sign in with the Minecraft account that owns the Java Edition needed by the pack.

Labels can change between app releases, but the first-run sequence is the same: install the application, sign in, then choose a pack from the modpack catalogue.

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft | Java & Bedrock Deluxe Collection | Windows Digital Code
  • DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
  • CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
  • SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).

macOS and Linux

Download the installer offered for your operating system from the same official page. On Linux, use the package or executable supplied by FTB and allow it to run according to your distribution’s normal application rules. Do not copy Windows launcher instructions to another operating system; the app’s download page provides the applicable build.

Install and play an FTB modpack

  1. Open the catalogue. In the FTB App, browse or search for the modpack you want.
  2. Choose a release. Select a stable pack version rather than assuming that “latest” is the version your friends’ server uses.
  3. Install. Start the installation and let the app download the game, loader, mods and configuration files. Large packs can take considerable disk space and download time.
  4. Set memory conservatively. Allocate only the RAM recommended by the pack documentation. Giving Minecraft nearly all of a computer’s memory can make the operating system swap or become unresponsive.
  5. Launch once in single-player. A first start creates configuration files and exposes missing Java, graphics-driver or dependency problems before you try to join a server.
  6. Update deliberately. Read the pack’s change notes before accepting an update if you play on a server. Updating a client independently can make it incompatible with the server.

Keep enough free storage for the installed instance, downloaded libraries and world saves. Make a copy of important single-player worlds before changing a pack version; downgrading after a world has been opened in a newer release can damage or remove content.

Minecraft | Java & Bedrock Ultimate Collection | Windows Digital Code
  • ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.

Join an existing FTB server

  1. In the FTB App, install the same modpack name and version used by the server.
  2. Start the pack and open Multiplayer.
  3. Choose Add Server, enter a name, and type the server address in IP:port form. If the administrator gives only an IP address, use the default Minecraft port only when they explicitly say it is unchanged.
  4. Save the entry and connect. The server may require an additional whitelist, account permission or voice/chat setup supplied by its administrator.

A “mod list mismatch,” “incompatible version” or immediate disconnect almost always means the client and server are not identical. Compare the pack name, Minecraft version, mod-loader version and pack release number. Do not remove a mod to make the launcher start: the server expects the pack’s complete set. Client-only additions such as a shader or minimap may work, but treat them as optional and remove them first when diagnosing a connection problem.

Get official FTB server files

Use FTB’s Server Files page for the supported installation route. Each pack has a Server Installer: one executable that downloads, updates and extracts the server files for the selected pack and version. This is not the same thing as downloading a random collection of jars from a forum.

Minecraft | Standard Edition | XBOX Digital Code
  • CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
  • SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
  • COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
  1. Open the FTB Server Files page.
  2. Select your operating system.
  3. Select the pack and the exact version you intend to run. “Latest” is appropriate only when every player will use that same release.
  4. Choose a download method. Desktop provides buttons for downloading the installer. Server displays a curl command suitable for a terminal on a remote machine.
  5. Save the installer with the filename supplied by FTB. Do not rename it: the installer reads its filename to determine which pack it must install.
  6. Run the installer in an otherwise empty server directory. Allow it to download the libraries, mods and configuration files, then read the generated start script and agreement files.

FTB’s current documentation is more reliable than old forum posts that describe authorization-protected API links or claim that a plain zip was unavailable. An unofficial modpacks.ch API route can expose individual jars and configurations, but it is not an FTB-supported installation path and can become invalid without notice. Use it only if you can verify every file and version against FTB’s current documentation.

Start a server on your own computer

Prepare the machine

  • Use a wired network connection where possible, especially for the host computer.
  • Install the Java runtime required by the pack. Hosting guides commonly mention Java 17 or 21 for modern packs, but this is a vendor recommendation, not a universal FTB requirement. Check the pack’s own documentation and the generated start script.
  • Reserve adequate disk space for the server, backups, logs and world growth.
  • Use an operating-system account and firewall rules that limit the server process rather than running unrelated software with elevated privileges.

Configure memory and launch scripts

The installer normally creates a Windows batch file and, for macOS or Linux, a shell script. Open the generated file in a text editor and locate the minimum and maximum heap settings. They are commonly expressed as -Xms and -Xmx, for example:

  • Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
  • Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
java -Xms4G -Xmx8G -jar server.jar nogui

Use the exact Java command, jar name and flags generated for your pack; the example is only a format illustration. Leave enough RAM for the operating system and any other services. A 2026 hosting guide claims that a large FTB pack may use 8–12 GB of RAM with a strong CPU, while other guides recommend different amounts. Those figures are vendor claims and conflict, so they are not a hard requirement for every pack. Start with the pack’s documented allocation, watch memory usage and increase it only when logs and measured performance justify the change.

Accept the Minecraft EULA and test locally

  1. Run the start script once. It will usually stop and create an eula.txt file.
  2. Open that file, read the license and change the agreement setting to true only if you accept it.
  3. Start the script again and wait for the console to report that the server is ready.
  4. Connect from the same computer using localhost or the local address. This separates server, Java and pack problems from router problems.

Forward the port for outside players

  1. Give the host computer a stable private address, using a DHCP reservation or a static address configured correctly for your network.
  2. In the router’s port-forwarding page, forward the Minecraft server port shown in the server properties to that computer’s private address. Router labels and screens vary by model.
  3. Allow the server executable through the computer’s firewall for the chosen network profile.
  4. Give friends your public address and port, not the private address used inside your home.
  5. Test from a network outside your home, such as a phone hotspot. Testing only from inside can produce a false success because some routers do not support hairpin connections.

Forwarding a port makes a service reachable from the internet. Expose only the port you need, keep the operating system and Java current, use a strong administrator account, and monitor logs. The server is available only while the host computer and its network connection remain powered and online; a reboot, sleep setting or household outage stops play.

Choose home hosting or a rented server

Factor Home computer Rented game server
Uptime Runs only while your computer, power and internet are available. Designed to remain online in a provider’s facility; outages and maintenance still occur.
Setup Install the official server files, configure Java, firewall and router forwarding. Often offers a control panel and one-click modpack installation; some packs still require manual file work.
CPU and RAM Limited by your existing hardware and by what the computer can spare while you use it. Choose a plan with stated resources; CPU quality and storage performance can matter as much as advertised RAM.
Cost No recurring hosting bill, but you pay electricity, hardware and your internet plan. Recurring rental charge. A comparison on the FTB wiki listed approximately EUR 4.88 per GB for CreeperHost and EUR 1.95 per GB for ServerPrism at the time of that comparison; prices and plans change.
Network exposure Requires forwarding a port into your home network. Players connect to the provider’s address, so your home router need not accept inbound Minecraft traffic.
Maintenance You handle backups, updates, crashes and hardware replacement. The provider supplies the panel and machine, but you remain responsible for pack updates, world backups and configuration.

Choose home hosting for a small group when you already have a suitable, always-on computer and understand router security. Choose a rented server when friends need dependable availability, your upload connection is limited, or you do not want to expose a home port. Compare CPU generation, guaranteed or shared RAM, storage, backup retention, location, cancellation terms and support—not only the advertised price per gigabyte.

One-click installation on a rented host

  1. Open the provider’s game panel and find the Version or Modpacks section.
  2. Filter for FTB, select the exact pack and release, and choose Install.
  3. Stop the server before changing pack versions or replacing files.
  4. Read the provider’s startup output. It should identify the selected pack and complete its library download before accepting connections.
  5. Make a fresh world backup before upgrades and retain a second copy outside the hosting panel.

When manual file upload is required

Some panels do not include the pack you need. For packs using the newer server layout described by one provider’s guide, upload the libraries folder inside the provider’s jar folder alongside the FTB server jar, and place the remaining generated subfolders at the server’s root. The exact directory names depend on the panel. Follow its file manager’s path and the pack’s generated start script rather than blindly merging folders from another release.

Keep client and server versions aligned

Compatibility is stricter than matching the pack’s marketing name. Record these values before inviting anyone:

  • FTB pack name and release number
  • Minecraft version
  • Forge, Fabric or other loader version used by that release
  • Java major version required by the pack
  • Any server-side configuration changes that players must copy

Distribute the same release through the FTB App and tell players not to update independently. If a server updates, stop it, back up the world, install the corresponding server files and have every player update before reconnecting. Never delete a mod merely because one client has a loading error; first restore the official file set.

Troubleshoot startup and connection failures

The server crashes before it becomes ready

  • Read the newest crash report and server log from the bottom upward to find the first error, not just the final shutdown message.
  • Check that the Java executable is the major version required by the pack. Modern packs often use Java 17 or 21, but the pack’s documentation takes precedence.
  • Confirm that the installer completed every library download and that the installer filename was not changed.
  • Restore the original mod and configuration set. A missing dependency or a manually removed mod is a common cause of startup failure.
  • Test a clean copy of the server directory. If the clean copy works, compare custom configs and added mods one change at a time.

Players cannot connect

  • Verify that client and server releases match exactly.
  • Confirm the server is listening on the port shown in its properties file and that the router forwards that port to the current private address.
  • Check the host firewall and test from an external network.
  • Confirm that the public IP has not changed and that the provider or internet service is not blocking inbound connections.

The world lags or stops responding

  • Watch the server console and system monitor for memory exhaustion, CPU saturation and disk activity.
  • Reduce per-player chunk loading and avoid giving every player an unlimited chunk-loading radius.
  • Pre-generate terrain with a tool such as Chunky before a group explores a new area; generation spikes are worst when many players travel at once.
  • Schedule controlled restarts every 12–24 hours only if logs and observed memory growth show that restarts help. A restart is maintenance, not a substitute for fixing a mod or hardware bottleneck.
  • Use the pack’s documented performance settings before adding unofficial JVM flags. A hosting guide recommends Aikar’s flags, but flags must match the Java version and workload and can complicate diagnosis.

Backups, updates and safe administration

  1. Stop the server cleanly before copying its world and configuration directories.
  2. Keep at least one recent local backup and one copy on a different device or service.
  3. Label backups with the pack version and date so you can restore a compatible world.
  4. Test a backup by opening a copy, not the live world.
  5. Read pack and mod change notes before upgrading. Take a new backup immediately before the change.

Do not treat a hosting panel’s automatic snapshot as your only backup unless you have confirmed its retention period and can download a restore copy. Server files, world data and player inventories can all be affected by a failed update.

Quick decision checklist

  • Playing alone: install the pack in the FTB App and launch it locally.
  • Joining friends: install the exact server release, then add the supplied IP:port under Multiplayer.
  • Hosting for a few people at home: use the official Server Installer, set Java and memory from the pack documentation, and configure a limited port forward.
  • Needing reliable 24/7 access: rent a server with adequate CPU, RAM and backup options; use one-click installation when available.
  • Seeing errors: compare versions first, then check Java, missing dependencies, logs, firewall and network routing in that order.
