FDM is still a sensible choice for larger or less detail-sensitive designs, especially when you prefer a thermoplastic filament workflow. The right process depends on what the illusion needs to do: a design built around transparency or light also needs a compatible resin, not just a high-resolution printer.
How the two processes differ for small illusions
FDM (fused deposition modeling) builds an object by extruding thermoplastic filament in successive lines. Resin printers cure liquid photopolymer in layers. The practical distinction for a small illusion is that resin commonly produces finer features and less obvious layer texture, while FDM offers a broad range of filament materials and can be a good fit when the part is larger or its smallest surface details are not central to the effect.

UltiMaker describes typical resin layer heights of 25–50 microns and typical FDM layer heights of 50–400 microns. These are broad technology ranges from its guide, whose publication year is not stated on the accessed page; they are not guaranteed settings or results for every printer or design. Formlabs likewise describes SLA as capable of finer detail, but that is a manufacturer’s process description, not an independent comparative trial. UltiMaker’s technology guide and Formlabs’ FDM-versus-SLA guide provide further context.

Which process fits your design?
Choose resin when the illusion depends on fine detail
Resin is generally the stronger candidate for small pieces with delicate geometry, narrow gaps, fine embossed or engraved features, or a surface that should look smooth at close viewing distances. Professional SLA systems can produce especially thin walls and small details, according to UltiMaker, but the result still depends on the specific printer, material, orientation, and design.

Choose FDM when scale or material range matters more
FDM can make sense for a larger illusion, a simpler shape, or a piece where visible layer texture will not undermine the effect. It uses thermoplastic filament and offers a broad range of material choices. If the illusion is mostly about silhouette or arrangement rather than tiny surface features, FDM may meet the need without adding resin’s wash-and-cure steps.
Treat transparency as a separate material question
If the effect relies on light passing through the print, do not assume that any resin will be transparent or optically suitable. A University of Strathclyde thesis chapter on optical-quality printing says resin choice and printer resolution are paramount, and describes resin-dependent differences in transmission and fine-feature quality. That evidence concerns optical-quality engineering prints, not every illusion object, so test the exact material and design before relying on a specific light effect. Read the thesis chapter.

- 【Bult in AI Camera】It is difficult to notice the warping of the model during 3d printing, but this is not a problem for Mars 5 Ultra. The 3D resin printer quipped with an AI smart camera, you can monitor the printing process at any time, notice errors in time and correct them immediately to ensure smooth printing. You can also enable time-lapse recording — it's a great way to monitor your prints or share the journey with others.
- 【One-Button Self-Check & Automatic Leveling】Repeated manual leveling is annoying, and It's so frustrating when you print fails due to the 3D printer accessory failure. Don't worry! With this 3D printer, you can use the self-check function before starting to print. Once it detects no faults, you can start to print with confidence. And you no longer need to deal with repeated leveling work. ELEGOO Mars 5 Ultra supports automatic leveling, which can easily solve your problem.
- 【Intelligent Mechanical Sensor】The ELEGOO Resin 3D Printer has a built-in intelligent mechanical sensor and supports Foreign Object Detection. it can avoid damage to the LCD screen. At the same time, it can alert you in time to issues like insufficient resin, excessive resin, leveling failure, etc., further ensuring the smooth progress of printing and preventing problems at the source.
Compare the details that actually control the result
Start with the model rather than a printer’s headline resolution. If you have an STL or CAD file, identify the smallest feature that must survive printing, the thinnest wall, the intended viewing distance, the required surface finish, and whether transparency is part of the illusion. Those constraints determine whether a process is even a plausible fit.

- XY capability: For resin printers, XY resolution refers to the detail available across a layer, such as pixel size or laser behavior.
- Z layer height: This describes the thickness of each printed layer. It affects vertical stepping but does not by itself establish how sharply small features will reproduce.
- Other variables: Light uniformity, printer design, resin behavior, and post-processing can all influence the finished result. Formlabs cautions that pixel count alone does not establish print detail or dimensional accuracy. See Formlabs’ explanation of 3D-printer resolution.
- Workflow: Compare build volume, material options, print time, and the post-processing workload as well as detail. Resin prints require washing and curing after printing; FDM uses a filament workflow instead.
For an optical effect, a successful-looking surface is not necessarily proof that the object will transmit or redirect light as intended. Resin formulation, fine-feature reproduction, and curing can each change the result. A sample print using the intended resin and geometry is the most useful check when the effect depends on optical performance.

Account for resin post-processing
Resin’s detail advantage comes with additional handling after printing: the part must be washed and cured. Those steps can affect thin sections and appearance. The University of Strathclyde thesis chapter notes that post-curing may alter surface finish, cause yellowing, or flex thin parts depending on the resin. Plan the design and test process with those possible changes in mind rather than judging an uncured print as the final result.
These sources establish washing and curing as process steps, but they do not provide a complete safety protocol or establish whether a particular workspace is suitable. Follow the printer and resin manufacturers’ instructions for the equipment and material you choose.

Use a test print to resolve close calls
- Find the critical feature. Mark the smallest gap, edge, wall, or engraved detail that the illusion needs.
- Check printer specifications. Compare the relevant XY capability and Z layer-height options, but do not treat either figure as a guarantee of finished accuracy.
- Test the actual material. For a transparent or light-dependent effect, use the intended resin and curing process in a small sample.
- Inspect under the intended conditions. View the test from the expected distance and lighting, and check that thin sections and surface appearance remain acceptable after post-processing.
A 2021 study in Applied Sciences measured a mean Z layer thickness of 21.189 microns for its particular experimental printer and resin. That measurement belongs to that experiment; it is not a performance promise for current consumer printers. Read the 2021 study.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPractical decision
For a compact illusion where the finest geometry and smooth appearance are essential, begin with resin and validate the smallest critical features. Prefer FDM when the object is bigger, simpler, or less dependent on surface detail, or when a filament material workflow better matches the project. If light transmission is central, make material-specific testing part of the decision: neither the process label nor a resolution number alone establishes that the illusion will work.
