For most beginners, an FDM (filament) 3D printer is the better first choice: it handles a wider range of practical and larger projects with a simpler print workflow. Choose resin if your main goal is finely detailed small objects—such as miniatures—and you can provide adequate ventilation and manage liquid resin, protective equipment, washing and curing.
Should you get an FDM or resin 3D printer?
Start with what you want to make and where you will use the printer. FDM is a strong general-purpose option for household fixes, functional prototypes, props and larger models. Resin printing is particularly suited to small, intricate objects where surface detail matters. Neither technology is universally better: the right choice depends on your projects, workspace and willingness to handle post-processing.

Choose FDM for varied projects and a simpler first workflow
FDM, also called FFF or filament printing, feeds solid thermoplastic filament through a heated nozzle and builds an object layer by layer. PLA is a common beginner material; the manufacturer Prusa Research recommends starting with standard PLA on compatible machines. FDM suits practical parts and larger prints, and offers a broad range of filament materials. The part’s performance still depends on the material, print orientation, settings and design.
Choose resin for small objects with fine detail
Resin printers cure liquid photopolymer with light; consumer models commonly use masked exposure, or MSLA. Resin can produce finer features and a smoother surface on small, detailed pieces such as miniatures, jewelry prototypes and dental models. A print is not finished when it leaves the machine: resin parts need washing and curing, and the liquid material requires careful handling.

No single current price comparison across markets is established here, so compare the complete setup for the machines and materials available to you.
Is resin printing worth the extra cleanup?
It can be, if detailed small prints are your priority and you have a suitable place to work. Resin adds steps and responsibilities beyond printing: ventilation, resin-specific protective equipment, spill control, washing, curing and careful handling of contaminated cleanup materials. Prusa describes resin printing as involving safety gear and messy post-processing, and cautions that it is better suited to a dedicated workshop than a home office. Whether your own space is appropriate depends on its ventilation, local guidance and the instructions for your printer and resin.

Plan the workspace before buying resin
- Check the safety data sheet (SDS) for the exact resin and follow its PPE guidance; a generic glove or respirator recommendation is not a substitute.
- Choose a location with adequate ventilation. The University of Illinois Division of Research Safety says resin printers should only be installed in adequately ventilated spaces.
- Use a hard-floor work area where spills can be managed. The University of Illinois notes that resin spills are difficult to remove completely from carpeting.
- Plan for washing, curing, spill response and contaminated cleanup as part of the workflow, not as optional extras.
Does FDM need ventilation too?
Yes. FDM is not emission-free. The University of Illinois Division of Research Safety notes that common feedstocks, including PLA and ABS, can emit ultrafine particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and advises adequate ventilation for 3D printer use. Its safety page, last updated June 17, 2026, recommends considering an enclosure with exhaust or filtration. Follow the printer manufacturer’s instructions and assess the actual room and setup; PLA should not be treated as requiring no ventilation.

How should a beginner compare the full cost?
Do not compare printers by sticker price alone. Account for the printer, materials, maintenance, failed prints and the time required to operate and finish parts. For resin, also include the safety and post-processing setup—such as appropriate PPE, ventilation provisions, washing and curing. The cost will vary with the machine, materials, use and local market; the available figures do not support a universal price comparison.

When comparing particular FDM models, check build volume, automatic bed leveling or calibration, heated-bed availability where relevant, manufacturer support, replacement-part availability and material compatibility. HP Canada’s beginner guide lists the Bambu Lab A1 Mini, Creality Ender-3 V3 SE, Anycubic Kobra 3 Combo and Prusa MINI+ as examples in its Canadian-market context. Models, prices and availability change, so check current official specifications and local stock rather than treating that list as a universal or current ranking.

The technologies can complement each other, but you do not need to buy both at the start. Begin with the type of work you expect to do most. An FDM printer is the more versatile first machine for mixed general-purpose projects; add resin later if fine detail on small objects becomes a regular need and you can support its handling and cleanup workflow.

A quick decision rule
- Pick FDM for household fixes, functional prototypes, cosplay parts, larger models or a broad mix of everyday prints. Start with standard PLA if your printer supports it and follow the manufacturer’s directions.
- Pick resin when most of your projects are small and detail-critical, and you can provide an adequately ventilated work area, follow the resin SDS and handle washing and curing.
- Wait before choosing resin if you lack a suitable workspace or do not want the added chemical-handling and post-processing steps.
