Usually, there is no difference in the basic printing process. FDM and FFF both describe printing by melting thermoplastic filament, extruding it through a nozzle and building an object layer by layer. The terms have different naming histories: FDM stands for Fused Deposition Modeling and is the trademarked term associated with Stratasys; FFF, or Fused Filament Fabrication, was coined by RepRap members as an equivalent term without that naming restriction.
What FDM and FFF mean
FDM means Fused Deposition Modeling. RepRap’s glossary describes it as a trademarked term associated with Stratasys. FFF means Fused Filament Fabrication; RepRap says its members coined it as an equivalent term that could be used without the same naming restriction. RepRap’s glossary is a useful reference for both names and the process.

This explains why product descriptions, guides and printer communities may use one term or the other for the same general type of machine. The naming history does not, by itself, establish that one printer is more capable, precise or reliable than another. The cited terminology supports the naming distinction; it should not be read as legal advice about trademark status in every jurisdiction.
How the process works
In both FDM and FFF, a printer feeds thermoplastic filament into a heated nozzle, which softens and extrudes the material. The nozzle deposits it along a toolpath, building the part in successive layers. Stratasys describes its FDM process this way, while Stratasys Direct calls FDM “also known as fused filament fabrication (FFF).” Stratasys’ FDM overview and Stratasys Direct’s explainer describe that shared mechanism.

The consumable is filament. RepRap lists 1.75 mm and 3 mm as common filament diameters, but a common size is not a guarantee of compatibility: check the printer’s specifications before buying filament.
Why some manufacturers distinguish FDM from generic FFF
Stratasys markets its FDM systems as production platforms and contrasts them with generic, open FFF systems. In its account, its systems combine rigid machine architecture, enclosed and heated build chambers, validated toolpaths and controlled material profiles. It says open systems may combine hardware, slicers and materials from different vendors, leaving users with more responsibility for process control. Stratasys’ comparison explains that company’s position.

That is a manufacturer’s description of its own products and its comparison with other equipment, not a universal technical definition. “FDM” on a product page does not automatically guarantee an enclosure, validated settings, traceability or a particular level of repeatability; nor does “FFF” mean a printer lacks those features. The relevant differences, if any, are in the specific machine and its supported workflow.

- Intended use: Is the machine configured for occasional prototypes, or does its documented workflow suit your production needs?
- Build environment: Check whether the printer is enclosed or has a heated chamber if the materials and parts you plan to print require those conditions.
- Materials and profiles: Confirm which filaments and print profiles the manufacturer supports or validates, and whether third-party materials are usable.
- Process control and traceability: For production work, determine what settings, materials and print records the system can control or document.
- Repeatability evidence: Look for model-specific documentation relevant to your parts and workflow rather than inferring consistency from the FDM or FFF label.
- Operator workload and support: Find out how much tuning and troubleshooting the workflow expects, and what technical support is available.
- Total workflow and cost: Consider the machine alongside its software, materials, operating requirements and support needs.
These checks help separate a vendor’s positioning from features that are actually specified for the printer you are considering.

FDM and FFF usually name the same filament-extrusion process; the main difference is the terminology’s history. When two printers differ in enclosure, materials, controls, repeatability or support, compare those documented machine-level features directly rather than assuming the acronyms settle the question.
