Squad Building Challenges (SBCs) ask you to submit eligible Player Items in Ultimate Team to meet a challenge’s requirements and earn its displayed reward. The format depends on the game edition: EA’s FC 27 guide covers both Item Score-based Simplified SBCs and traditional squad-based Puzzle SBCs, while its FC 26 guidance describes squad submissions. Check the individual challenge screen for its requirements, reward and expiry—and review every selected item before confirming, because submissions are permanent.
How do SBCs work in EA SPORTS FC?
An SBC is an in-game challenge with rules for which Player Items you can submit. Meet the challenge’s requirements and you receive the reward shown for it. The rules, how progress is counted and when rewards are granted can differ by SBC format and game edition, so the live challenge screen is the authority for a particular challenge. EA’s guide, accessed October 12, 2026, describes FC 27 and FC 26 mechanics: EA Help: How Ultimate Team Squad Building Challenges work.

In FC 27, EA describes two formats. Puzzle SBCs use a traditional squad and its specified requirements. Simplified SBCs use an Item Score target: eligible Player Items contribute to the total, and progress can be saved across submissions. EA’s FC 26 instructions describe building and submitting a squad. Do not assume a rule from one edition or format applies to another.
The practical distinction is what you need to satisfy before the challenge is complete. In a Puzzle SBC, you assemble a squad that meets the stated squad conditions. In a Simplified SBC, you contribute eligible items toward the target score. In both cases, the challenge-specific instructions matter more than a general description: they tell you what qualifies, how much more is required, what reward is attached and whether there is time left to complete it.

Some SBCs may involve more than one challenge rather than a single submission. In that case, completion can involve individual challenge rewards as well as a reward for completing the group. Read the whole set before starting, because a reward shown for an individual part is not necessarily the only reward associated with the larger SBC.
What requirements can an SBC set?
Puzzle SBCs
EA lists several possible Puzzle SBC requirements, including squad rating, chemistry, player quality, leagues, nations and clubs. A challenge can set one or more of these conditions. Read the complete requirement list in the challenge rather than assuming that a certain rating or player combination will qualify.
These criteria are not interchangeable. A squad may meet one condition but still fail another, so check every line before submitting. For example, if a Puzzle SBC lists both a squad-rating condition and a league or nation condition, satisfying the rating alone does not establish that the squad is eligible. EA’s overview names these possible requirements but does not give one universal rating, chemistry value or combination to use; those values belong to the live challenge.
When building a squad, use the challenge’s full set of rules as a checklist and verify that the game recognizes each one. Do not rely on a remembered requirement from a different SBC or edition. The same broad category—such as chemistry or player quality—can be used with challenge-specific conditions, and only the displayed requirements tell you what this particular submission needs.
Simplified SBCs
A Simplified SBC sets its own Item Score target. You contribute eligible Player Items toward that target, and the game tracks progress across submissions. EA says the screen warns you if the selected items’ score greatly exceeds what is required. Check the score before committing items so you do not submit more value than the challenge calls for.
Because progress can be saved between submissions, you may not need to contribute everything in one go. Check the remaining target after each submission and consider what is still needed before adding more items. A saved score is progress toward the challenge, not a temporary loan of the submitted Player Items: EA says submitted items are permanently removed, including items used for partial progress.

The warning about greatly exceeding the requirement is a prompt to stop and review, not a reason to assume the game will return excess items. Confirm which items are selected and compare the total score with the target before proceeding. EA’s guidance does not set a single Item Score value for all Simplified SBCs; the target is specific to each challenge.

What rewards do SBCs give, and when do you receive them?
The reward depends on the individual SBC; EA’s FC 26 guidance describes rewards that vary by challenge and can include Player Items or packs. Some SBCs consist of multiple challenges: each may offer an individual reward, with an additional group reward for completing the full set. Some are repeatable. These are possibilities, not a guarantee for every SBC, so inspect the live challenge for its specific reward, completion rules and whether it can be repeated.
Do not infer the reward from the challenge name or from another SBC that looks similar. Check the reward displayed on the challenge itself, and note whether there are separate rewards for completing a stage and for finishing the entire group. If repeatability matters to your decision, confirm that the live challenge says it can be repeated rather than treating a one-time reward as repeatable.
For FC 27 Simplified SBCs, EA says the main reward arrives when the full requirement is met. If a Simplified SBC expires after partial progress, EA says it may provide a reduced untradeable reward based on that progress. That qualification is specific to the described Simplified SBC behavior; it should not be assumed for every SBC or format.
The word “may” matters: the guidance describes a possible reduced reward in that circumstance, not a guarantee that every partially completed SBC pays out. Nor does the reduced untradeable reward restore or compensate for the Player Items already submitted. For other formats or editions, check the specific guidance rather than expecting the same partial-completion outcome.
Where can you get Player Items for an SBC?
EA’s FC 26 instructions identify items in your Club or SBC Storage as possible inputs, and say Player Items can also be obtained through the Ultimate Team Transfer Market. Which items qualify depends on the challenge’s rules. Before using an item, check that it satisfies the requirement and that you are willing to give it up permanently.

These are possible in-game sources, not a requirement to use all of them. You can assess eligible items already in your Club or SBC Storage, and the FC 26 guidance also identifies the Transfer Market as a way to obtain Player Items. No universal market price is available; prices can change, so check the game if you are considering obtaining an item for a specific challenge.
Think about the item’s role in your Club before submitting it. Since submission is permanent, do not select a Player Item simply because it qualifies if you are not prepared to lose it. In particular, review the selected items individually before confirmation, whether they came from your Club, SBC Storage or the market. The source of an item does not change the finality of the submission.
How do SBC expiry dates work?
There is no universal SBC deadline or time zone established in EA’s general guidance. Availability and deadlines are challenge-specific; check the expiry displayed on the live challenge screen before you start and again before making a submission. EA says that once an SBC expires, you can no longer submit a squad to complete it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEA’s wording is direct: “When an SBC expires, you can no longer submit a Squad to complete it.” The date and time shown for one challenge should not be applied to another. EA’s general guidance establishes no single daily reset, shared schedule or universal time zone for SBC expirations, so use the displayed deadline for the challenge you are considering.
For FC 27 Simplified SBCs, progress can be saved between submissions. EA also describes a possible reduced untradeable reward if the challenge expires after partial progress. This does not return the Player Items already submitted, and the same treatment is not established for every SBC type. For other formats, do not count on partial progress carrying over or producing a reward unless the challenge or edition’s guidance says so.
A sensible deadline check is to look at the expiry before beginning, then review it again before committing items—especially if you plan multiple submissions or a multi-challenge group. The general guide does not provide live challenge deadlines, so there is no reliable way to infer a particular SBC’s remaining availability from this explanation. If the challenge has expired, EA says you can no longer submit to complete it.

What happens to items when you submit them?
Submitted Player Items are permanently removed from your Club, including items used toward partial progress. EA states that its advisors cannot restore them; its guidance puts it plainly: “SBC submissions are final.” Treat each submission as an irreversible exchange, not as a temporary placement of items in a squad.

Partial progress does not mean the items are being held for you, and an expired challenge does not reverse a submission. In FC 27 Simplified SBCs, a possible reduced untradeable reward after partial progress is not an item-return mechanism. EA says advisors cannot restore submitted items, so the important decision point is before you confirm.
- Open the SBC and read its format, complete requirements, displayed reward and expiry.
- Select only eligible items, then review the exact items and, for a Simplified SBC, the Item Score and remaining target.
- Check for any warning that your selected score greatly exceeds the requirement.
- For a multi-challenge SBC, understand which part you are completing and what additional group requirements or rewards remain.
- Confirm only when you are sure you can part with every selected item permanently.
If the selected items are not what you intended, or if the displayed score appears much higher than the remaining target, pause before confirming and correct the selection. The irreversible nature of the transaction makes this review more important than relying on a later recovery option: EA says its advisors cannot restore submitted items.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to assess an SBC before committing items
If you are choosing between live challenges, compare like with like. The exact values are shown in-game and may change, so there is no reliable universal requirement, reward or deadline to substitute for the challenge screen.
- Format and edition: Identify whether it is a Puzzle SBC or Simplified SBC and which game edition’s rules apply.
- Requirement: Note the squad conditions or Item Score target, including any remaining progress.
- Items at stake: Check which Club, SBC Storage or market-obtained items you would submit and whether you are prepared to lose them.
- Reward: Verify the displayed reward, whether it is tradeable, and whether an individual or group reward requires completing more than one challenge.
- Repeatability: Check whether the SBC can be repeated rather than presuming it can.
- Deadline and incomplete progress: Read the displayed expiry and the rules for progress or rewards if the challenge ends before you finish.
Use the same checks for each option rather than comparing a reward in isolation. One SBC may require completing a set of challenges for its group reward; another may be repeatable; a Simplified SBC may use saved Item Score progress, while a Puzzle SBC uses squad requirements. The live screens establish those details. Also compare what you would actually submit: there is no fixed cost or market price, and the submitted Player Items are permanently removed regardless of their source.
There is no universal “best” SBC established by EA’s general guide. Whether a particular challenge is worth doing depends on its requirements, the reward shown, which eligible items you are willing to submit, any repeatability or group-completion rules, and how much time remains. These are decision factors, not a promise that a given reward will be valuable or that a challenge will be available later.
EA Help’s overview was accessed October 12, 2026. It describes the general mechanics but does not establish current live SBC contents, exact expiry timestamps, challenge-specific requirements, current rewards or Transfer Market prices. Those details should be verified in-game when deciding whether to complete a particular challenge.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do SBCs work in EA SPORTS FC 27?
EA describes two FC 27 formats. Puzzle SBCs use a traditional squad and specified requirements. Simplified SBCs ask you to contribute eligible Player Items toward an Item Score target, with progress saved between submissions. Check the individual challenge for its exact rules, reward and expiry.
When do I get my Simplified SBC reward?
EA says the main FC 27 Simplified SBC reward arrives when you meet the full requirement. The guide also says a challenge that expires after partial progress may provide a reduced untradeable reward based on that progress; it does not promise that outcome for every SBC.
