Rivals is the ongoing Ultimate Team ladder; Champions is a finite, qualification-based competition. Play Rivals for regular division progression, weekly rewards, and Champions Qualification Points. Choose Champions once you have qualified and want to concentrate your matches into an event: Champions Finals have 15 matches, with rewards tied to that competition.
How are Rivals and Champions different?
Both modes are part of EA SPORTS FC Ultimate Team, but they serve different purposes. Rivals is a persistent seasonal ladder: results move you between stages and divisions, and you can play solo or in co-op. Champions is a competition you qualify for, with Play-Offs and Finals; the Finals are limited to 15 matches. EA’s Rivals guide and Champions guide describe the current formats.

The simplest distinction is what your results are working toward. In Rivals, each match contributes to your ongoing ladder progress and weekly reward position. Wins can move you forward, losses can move you back, and your place in the ladder provides a continuing measure of progress. In Champions, qualification comes first; once you enter the competition, results accumulate within that event and affect its progress and rewards. Rivals is therefore the more repeatable option, while Champions puts a set of matches inside a finite competitive run.
There are 11 Rivals divisions in the published format: Divisions 10 through 1, followed by Elite. Both modes use matchmaking, but the listed inputs differ. Rivals considers location and rank in Divisions 10–1, and uses Skill Rating in Elite. Champions considers location and your current form in the competition. Neither format is described as a guarantee that every opponent will be an exact skill match.

How does Rivals work?
Rivals has 11 divisions: Divisions 10 through 1, followed by Elite. Within divisions, you advance through stages by winning. A loss can set you back, although checkpoints prevent a fall below certain points in the ladder. Winning consecutive matches creates a win streak that accelerates progression. Your current division and rank determine your weekly rewards, and winning more matches can upgrade them.
This makes Rivals useful both as a destination and as a route to another competition. If you are trying to improve your position, the ladder gives you visible stage and division progress to follow. If you are not yet focused on Champions, matches can still count toward your weekly Rivals reward progress. A run of consecutive wins can speed ladder movement, but checkpoints also mean that progression is not simply a one-loss reset: some points in the ladder protect your position from falling farther.
Rivals is not only a solo queue. EA lists solo and co-op play, which makes it the clearest option of the two if you want to play with another person. In co-op matchmaking, however, EA uses the higher-ranked player for matchmaking. That is important when partners are at different ranks: the lower-ranked partner should not assume the pair will be matched using only their own position.

You earn Champions Qualification Points through Rivals or Squad Battles; higher Rivals divisions award points faster, but every division counts. EA does not require players to reach Division 6 to qualify. The points are qualification progress, not a guarantee of entry independent of the current qualification rules shown in-game.
Practically, that means you can continue playing Rivals while building toward Champions instead of treating a particular division as a universal gate. Higher divisions may let you build Qualification Points faster, but EA’s published rules do not establish a requirement that every player must reach Division 6. Check your current points and the live entry requirements in Ultimate Team, since the applicable competition details shown in-game are the safest guide for whether you can enter.
How does Champions work?
Champions is not an always-on ladder in the same sense as Rivals. You first earn enough Qualification Points to enter, then take part in the available Champions competition. Finals are a 15-match event. Results contribute to your event progress and rewards, which can include Ultimate Team Coins, additional Qualification Points, and Champions Tokens.
The qualification distinction matters when deciding where to spend your next session. If you do not yet meet the current entry conditions, Champions is not simply another queue you can choose instead of Rivals; you need to build qualification progress first. Rivals is one way to earn points, and Squad Battles is another. Once qualified, Champions gives you a defined event rather than the open-ended ladder rhythm of Rivals. The 15-match number applies to Finals, so do not treat it as the total match count for every part of the Champions path: the competition also includes Play-Offs.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A 15-match Finals format gives a run a clear upper limit, but it does not by itself say how long you personally will spend playing or how many matches you should expect to complete in a sitting. It does mean the Finals are bounded, unlike a persistent ladder you can return to over the course of the season. If you prefer to schedule play around a defined competition, that structure may appeal; if you prefer to play intermittently and keep making ladder progress, Rivals is likely the more natural fit.
Champions uses form within the current competition as one of its matchmaking factors. Form is not a permanent rating of your ability: it changes as wins and losses accumulate in that competition. EA’s illustrative sequence starts at zero, adds one for each win, subtracts one for each loss, and produces plus one after win, loss, loss, win, win. The example explains the direction of the calculation, not a promise that every opponent will have identical form or skill.
Tokens can be exchanged in the Token Store for event-dependent items. EA says available categories can include special player items, Evolutions, packs, player picks, and vanity rewards. The selection and token costs can change, so use the current competition progress screen and Token Store rather than relying on an old reward list.
That variability is worth checking before you commit to a specific reward goal. A category being available in a Token Store does not mean it will always appear in the same event, at the same cost, or alongside the same alternatives. Look at the current event’s progress and store screens to confirm which items are offered and what each costs in Tokens. The published information supports those reward categories, but not a permanent item-by-item list or a universal value comparison.

How does matchmaking work?
Rivals matchmaking
In Rivals Divisions 10–1, EA says matchmaking considers your location, rank, and platform when cross-play is enabled. In co-op, the higher-ranked player is used for matchmaking. Elite Division matchmaking considers location, Skill Rating, and platform. EA caps the matchmaking rating used for players rated 2200 or higher at 2200, which it says makes it easier for high-rated players to find matches.
The division and Elite rules are not identical. In Divisions 10–1, the published factors include rank; in Elite, the listed factors include Skill Rating. The rating cap is a matchmaking adjustment, not a change to the player’s underlying achievement or a statement that every Elite opponent will have a 2200 rating. EA says it treats ratings of 2200 or above as 2200 for matchmaking so high-rated players can find matches more easily.
Platform can also matter when cross-play is enabled. If you and a friend want to play across systems, confirm that cross-play is available for your platform generation and that your settings allow it. For co-op Rivals, also consider the higher-ranked player’s matchmaking position when you decide which account to use as the partner.
Champions matchmaking
Champions matchmaking considers location, current form, and platform or cross-play settings. Form is tracked across the current competition: a win adds one and a loss subtracts one. For example, a sequence of win, loss, loss, win, win moves form from zero to plus one.

Because form changes with each result, matchmaking context can shift during a run. A player does not carry a fixed form score from one completed competition into the next based on the published example; the example describes form accumulated across the current competition. The listed inputs still include location and platform settings, so form is one factor rather than the sole explanation for an opponent being selected.
Neither mode promises perfectly even opponents. In an FC 26 feedback update, EA said an early-season Champions issue meant form was not working as intended, allowing more variation in opponents’ skill levels. EA described similar-form opponents as the general intended behavior, while noting that matchmaking must work with the best available match at the time; that is not a guarantee of equal skill or outcome. See EA’s FC 26 October Feedback Update for its statement.
EA’s own qualification is useful context when judging an unusually difficult or easy match. It said: “While matchmaking is always complex and tries to give you the best available match at any given time, generally speaking we can say that you can expect to be playing with players who are in similar Form as you in FUT Champions matches.” This is EA’s description of intended general behavior, not a promise of equal ability, a guaranteed close score, or a perfectly balanced run. The reported early-season issue also shows why a published matchmaking design should not be mistaken for an assurance that the system will work identically in every period.
Cross-play limits
Cross-play is limited to the same platform generation in EA’s documented examples: PS4 with Xbox One, and PS5 with Xbox Series X|S and PC. EA says Champions cross-play does not apply to Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. Availability also depends on your settings. The Rivals guide and Champions guide explain the applicable platform rules.
Recommended Free Tools
In other words, cross-play does not mean that every console, PC, and Nintendo player is placed in one unrestricted pool. The examples distinguish the earlier console generation—PS4 and Xbox One—from PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. If the other player is on a different generation, do not assume that cross-play will connect you. Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 are specifically excluded from Champions cross-play in EA’s guidance. Verify the live game’s settings and rules before arranging a session, since platform compatibility and cross-play settings both matter.
What rewards can you earn?
Rivals weekly rewards
Rivals rewards are tied to your current division and rank for the weekly cycle. More wins can upgrade the reward level, making match results matter beyond simply moving up the ladder. EA’s help page lists a Thursday release time of 06:59 UTC, but timing and season rules can change; check the live game or current support page for the applicable cycle.
There are two things to keep in mind when comparing those rewards with Champions. First, Rivals rewards are recurring and connected to your place in the ladder for the weekly cycle. Second, additional wins can improve the rewards, so the reward outcome is linked both to where you are and to your results. The available information does not support a single reward total that applies to every division, rank, or week. Check the current Rivals reward display rather than using an old list to decide whether one more match is worthwhile.

EA’s support page gives the release time as Thursday at 06:59 UTC. Champions rewards are tied to the competition rather than a repeating weekly ladder rank. Possible rewards include Coins, Qualification Points, and Tokens. Because event reward tracks and Token Store contents vary, the in-game screens are the authoritative place to see what a particular run can earn.
The Token Store gives Champions rewards a different shape from Rivals weekly rewards. Instead of treating a weekly rank as the only reference point, you can inspect the active event’s reward progress and available token exchanges. The published categories include special player items, Evolutions, packs, player picks, and vanity rewards, but exact offers and costs are event-dependent. If you are aiming for a particular item, check that it is actually available in the current store and confirm its current token cost before setting your target.
It is not possible to say that one mode is objectively more rewarding for every player from these formats alone. Rivals offers recurring progression and rewards that can improve with wins; Champions concentrates play in a capped event with its own reward track. The practical return depends on your results, the live reward schedule, and how much time you choose to spend.
A fair comparison should therefore start with the reward you value and the format you are willing to play. A player who prefers steady ladder sessions may value Rivals’ continuing weekly cycle and Qualification Point progress. A player who has qualified and wants to focus on one competition may prefer Champions’ event rewards and Token Store. Neither description proves that one mode produces more rewards per hour or more valuable items for every account; no independent average-reward or player-outcome statistic is established by EA’s published format information.
Which mode should you play?
Choose Rivals if you want ongoing progression
- You want a ladder you can return to regularly rather than a finite event.
- You want to track division and stage progress, including the protection of checkpoints and the faster movement from win streaks.
- You want solo or co-op options.
- You want to earn Qualification Points through matches while working toward Champions.
Rivals is also the straightforward choice if qualification is still on your checklist. You can earn Qualification Points through Rivals or Squad Battles, and every Rivals division contributes; higher divisions earn points faster, but Division 6 is not a universal entry requirement. If you are still learning your place in the ladder or want to play with a co-op partner, Rivals combines those goals with weekly reward progress.
Choose it, too, if your schedule favors a mode you can return to without centering all your play around one capped event. A loss can affect your stage position, while checkpoints prevent some losses from undoing all progress. Win streaks can speed advancement, but you do not need to assume every session will be a steady climb: the ladder is responsive to results, and current rank and division also frame the weekly reward level.
Choose Champions if you have qualified and want an event
- You are ready to play a time-bounded competition rather than accumulate routine ladder progress.
- You want to focus results into a Finals run capped at 15 matches.
- You want to pursue event-specific rewards, including any Tokens and current Token Store options.
Champions fits players who meet the current entry rules and want the competition itself to be the focus. The Finals cap provides a defined event format; the current form system takes wins and losses into account during that competition. If you care about a particular reward, inspect the active progress track and Token Store first rather than assuming an item or cost from a prior event still applies.
That does not mean Champions is automatically the more serious, more lucrative, or more difficult choice for every player. The sources describe its qualification structure, matchmaking inputs, 15-match Finals, and possible reward categories; they do not establish a universal difficulty ranking or guaranteed reward value compared with Rivals. Your own fit depends on whether you prefer an event run or an ongoing ladder, your eligibility, the live rewards, and your available play time.
These recommendations follow from the published formats, not from a claim that one mode is easier or pays out more on average. If you prefer co-op or are still building qualification progress, Rivals is the more direct fit. If you have qualified and want a defined competitive run, Champions is the better fit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before you queue
- For Champions, check your Qualification Points and the current entry requirements in Ultimate Team.
- Review the current event progress and Token Store before playing if a particular reward is your goal; items and costs are event-dependent.
- Confirm cross-play settings and platform-generation compatibility, especially if you are queueing with someone on another system.
- For Rivals, check your current division, rank, and reward progress so you know what additional wins can change.
It is also worth checking what you want from the next session before choosing a queue. If the goal is qualification, compare the Qualification Points shown in-game and remember that Squad Battles is another route. If the goal is a Rivals weekly reward, look at your current division and rank and whether further wins can upgrade it. If the goal is a Champions Token reward, verify that the item is available and that its cost fits the current event’s offer.

For matchmaking expectations, know which factors EA lists for the mode you are entering: Rivals rank in Divisions 10–1, Elite Skill Rating, or Champions current form, alongside location and platform considerations. These are useful descriptions of matchmaking, not guarantees about the opponent you will draw. Finally, if you are coordinating co-op or cross-play, check the higher-ranked Rivals partner rule and the platform-generation limits before you queue.
How to decide in one minute
- Check eligibility. If you have not earned enough Champions Qualification Points under the current rules, continue earning points through Rivals or Squad Battles.
- Choose the play pattern. Pick Rivals for ongoing ladder progress and weekly reward tracking; pick Champions if you are ready to focus on the qualified competition.
- Check the live reward. Rivals rewards depend on division and rank and may improve with wins. Champions rewards and Token Store costs can vary by event.
- Confirm who can join. Rivals supports solo and co-op, with the higher-ranked co-op player used for matchmaking. For cross-play, confirm settings and platform generation.
- Set expectations. Matchmaking uses the factors EA lists, but neither mode promises an exactly even opponent or a specific match result.
This quick check keeps the decision grounded in what the modes actually provide. It avoids treating Champions as a direct replacement for Rivals when qualification is incomplete, avoids treating a past reward table as current, and avoids assuming that cross-play or matchmaking works the same way across every platform and mode.

How does matchmaking work in Rivals?
In Divisions 10–1, EA says Rivals matchmaking considers location, rank, and platform when cross-play is enabled. In co-op, the higher-ranked player is used for matchmaking. Elite uses location, Skill Rating, and platform; ratings of 2200 or more are treated as 2200 for matchmaking to help high-rated players find matches.
How does matchmaking work in Champions?
Champions matchmaking considers location, current form in the competition, and platform or cross-play settings. EA describes similar-form opponents as the general intended behavior, but matchmaking is not a guarantee of equal skill or outcomes, and EA has reported an early-season issue where form did not work as intended.
How many matches are in Champions Finals?
Champions Finals have 15 matches. Champions also includes Play-Offs, so the 15-match figure describes Finals rather than every part of the qualification and competition path.
How do Rewards work in Rivals?
Rivals weekly rewards are tied to your current division and rank, and additional wins can upgrade them. EA’s help page lists a Thursday release time of 06:59 UTC, but check the live game or current support page because timing and season rules can change.
Do I have to reach Division 6 to qualify for Champions?
No. EA says Champions Qualification Points can be earned through Rivals or Squad Battles, and every Rivals division counts. Higher Rivals divisions earn points faster, but Division 6 is not a universal qualification requirement. Check the current in-game entry rules and your points.
Can I play Rivals co-op or cross-play with a friend?
Rivals supports solo and co-op. In co-op, matchmaking uses the higher-ranked player. Cross-play depends on settings and platform generation: EA’s examples pair PS4 with Xbox One, and PS5 with Xbox Series X|S and PC. Champions cross-play does not apply to Nintendo Switch or Switch 2.
Which mode gives better rewards?
There is no universal answer supported by the published formats. Rivals offers recurring weekly rewards tied to division and rank, which can improve with wins. Champions offers event rewards that may include Coins, Qualification Points, and Tokens. Results, current reward schedules, event offers, and the time you spend all affect the practical return.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Play Rivals for a repeatable ladder, solo or co-op options, weekly rewards, and a way to earn Champions Qualification Points. Play Champions once qualified if you want a defined event, including a 15-match Finals format and event-specific rewards. Check current entry rules, rewards, Token Store costs, and platform compatibility in-game; neither mode guarantees a perfectly even match or a universally better reward return.
