What is the best formation in FC 27 right now?
There is no formation that is best for every squad or player. As of the October 1, 2026 usage snapshot, 4-2-1-3 is the clearest default to test: FUT.GG lists it in 29% of tracked community squads and 21% of tracked pro squads. How to set up 4-2-1-3
The current tactics guide’s suggested 4-2-1-3 setup pairs Balanced build-up with a Balanced Defensive Approach and line height 60. It assigns the roles below; use them as a template and adjust for the players available in your squad.
- Two holding midfielders: Deep-Lying Playmakers.
- Attacking midfielder: Playmaker at CAM.
- Wide forwards: Inside Forwards on both wings.
- Striker: Advanced Forward.
The guide reports line height 60 as common among its top formations. It is the upper limit of the Balanced range, which the guide gives as 31–60, rather than a required setting. When to choose a different shape
Pick 4-4-1-1 for a more conservative setup
The guide describes 4-4-1-1 as a safer option if you are conceding on counters. Its tracked usage—22% of community squads and 16% of pro squads—makes it the second-most-used option in the cited snapshot. It is a reasonable alternative to test when the 4-2-1-3’s attacking shape is not giving you enough stability. FUT.GG

Use a narrow shape for central combinations
4-3-1-2 and 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow are options to compare when your strongest players and preferred combinations are central rather than out wide. FUT.GG lists them at 12% and 8% of tracked community squads respectively, and 17% and 14% of tracked pro squads. Make roles and defending fit your team
Formation alone does not determine how a team behaves. The tactics guide says role familiarity affects how urgently players make runs, so a role assignment that suits the diagram may still feel wrong if your players are unfamiliar with it. Try the setup with your actual squad and notice whether the runs and support options you need appear. FC 27 tactics guide
Defensive settings should also match your habits. The guide says AI-controlled defenders have less influence in competitive gameplay than before, and a T3 reviewer describes manual defending as more consequential; that reviewer’s account is an individual experience, not controlled testing. If you are comfortable switching defenders and defending manually, you may prefer a more aggressive approach than someone who relies more on shape and cover.
