There is no single USB format that works best with every TV: the right choice is the one your exact TV model supports and that can hold your largest media file. FAT32 works for files smaller than 4 GiB; a larger video needs exFAT or NTFS, and the TV must explicitly support the format you choose. Check the TV manual before formatting.
Compare the formats for TV playback
| Format | File-size limit | TV compatibility | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| FAT32 | Microsoft lists a maximum individual file size of 4 GiB. A file at or above that ceiling will not fit as one FAT32 file. | Some TV guides list FAT32, but support depends on the model. | When the TV supports it and every media file is below 4 GiB. |
| exFAT | Supports files far larger than FAT32’s limit; Microsoft’s exFAT specification describes 64-bit file sizes. | Support varies by model and series. | For larger files, but only if the TV’s documentation names exFAT. |
| NTFS | Microsoft’s file-system comparison lists a maximum individual file size far above FAT32’s limit. | Support varies by model and manufacturer. | For larger files, but only if the TV’s documentation names NTFS. |
Microsoft’s file-system comparison gives FAT32 a 4 GiB maximum file size, compared with 264−1 bytes for NTFS and exFAT. Those are file-system figures, not promises about what a particular TV can read. Microsoft Learn’s file-system comparison

Choose a format using your TV model and file sizes
- Find the TV’s model number, usually on its rear label or in its settings or system information.
- Open that model’s manual or manufacturer support page and look for USB playback, supported file systems, and supported storage capacity.
- If the TV lists FAT32 and every individual media file is below 4 GiB, FAT32 is a reasonable choice.
- If a file is 4 GiB or larger, choose exFAT or NTFS only if the TV documentation explicitly supports that format.
- Before reformatting, copy files you need to keep elsewhere. Formatting erases the drive’s data.
Do not infer compatibility from the brand alone: support can vary among models and model years. A drive’s capacity may also exceed what the TV supports, so check that limit separately.

Even support information from one manufacturer can vary by page and model. LG’s US guide, “LG TV – Viewing Content on a USB Device,” published July 17, 2026, says to format storage as FAT32 or NTFS. That guide recommends USB memory of 32 GB or less and external storage of 2 TB or less; those figures apply to that guide, not to every LG TV. LG’s USB viewing guide

LG’s troubleshooting page, published November 6, 2025, also lists exFAT among file systems that may be used. It notes that an incompatible file system, insufficient power for a hard drive, or device limitations can stop a drive from being recognized. Sony’s support matrix, last modified September 20, 2022, shows why series-level checks matter: its 2015–2022 Android TV/Google TV grouping, excluding W800 and X72K, lists NTFS, FAT32, FAT16, and exFAT. The W800 and X72K entries do not list exFAT. Sony says the matrix applies only to specified products and systems. Sony’s file-system support matrix

If the TV does not recognize the USB drive
- Check the format: Confirm that the exact model supports the drive’s file system. Reformatting may help only if you select a supported format, and it erases existing data.
- Check capacity: Make sure the drive is within the TV’s stated capacity limits.
- Check the USB port and power: For an external hard drive, confirm the TV’s port can supply the required power or use the power arrangement recommended by the drive and TV manufacturers.
- Check the media file itself: A recognized file system does not guarantee playback. The TV may not support the video’s encoding or other media characteristics. Sony likewise cautions that some files may not play even when the file system is supported. Sony’s USB playback guidance
