If you deleted a file from a FAT32 drive, stop using the drive immediately and save any recovered files to a different disk or partition. TestDisk may restore a deleted file when its FAT directory entry remains and the file’s data has not been reused; recovery is conditional, not guaranteed.
What “Taphonomy” means here
“Taphonomy” is an editorial framing for cautious FAT32 recovery, not an identified recovery product. The documented tools covered here are TestDisk, PhotoRec and Microsoft Windows File Recovery. There is no established basis for claiming that a software project named Taphonomy exists or has particular capabilities.

Why deleted FAT32 files may still be recoverable
When a file is deleted from a FAT filesystem, its directory entry is marked deleted and its data area is marked unallocated. TestDisk can use the remaining directory entry to find where the file began. The contents can be recovered only if the relevant data area has not been overwritten or reused. CGSecurity’s TestDisk FAT undelete documentation puts the condition plainly: “If the data area hasn’t been overwritten by a new file, the file is recoverable.” That describes a condition for recovery, not a guarantee that every deleted file can be restored.

- Stop using the affected drive, card or computer. Further activity can write data over the area you hope to recover. TestDisk advises not using the media until recovery is complete.
- Do not save recovered files to the source. Choose a different partition or disk. A separate external drive is one option; the necessary capacity depends on the files you are trying to recover.
- Choose a recovery method based on what matters. Try filesystem-based undelete when preserving names and folder organization is important. Consider file carving if that method does not find the files and you can work without their original names and folders.
TestDisk’s guidance on avoiding use of the media and copying files elsewhere is in its FAT undelete instructions. PhotoRec likewise warns that recovered files should be written to a separate destination filesystem.

Which recovery method fits?
| Method | What it uses | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| TestDisk undelete | The deleted FAT directory entry to locate where a file began. | Best suited to cases where useful directory information remains and the file’s data area has not been reused. Copy recovered files to another partition or disk. |
| PhotoRec | File signatures, a process called file carving. | May find files when other methods fail, including on corrupted filesystems, but does not retain original filenames or folder structure. Save results to a separate filesystem. |
| Windows File Recovery | Microsoft’s command-line recovery app. | Microsoft lists FAT and exFAT support in Extensive mode. Check the app’s current availability and Windows compatibility before relying on it. |
TestDisk: try directory-based undelete first when names matter
TestDisk’s FAT undelete method relies on leftover directory information to locate a deleted file’s starting point. It is the more suitable first attempt when you want the original filenames and the directory entry is still usable. It cannot restore contents whose data area has been overwritten or reused. Follow CGSecurity’s TestDisk instructions and send recovered output to a different location.
PhotoRec: use carving when directory-based recovery fails
PhotoRec searches for file signatures rather than relying on the deleted directory entry. CGSecurity describes its limits directly: “PhotoRec doesn’t recover the original filenames or the file structure but it can recover lost files even from corrupted filesystem.” You may need to identify recovered files by their contents, and their former folder organization will not be available. See the PhotoRec documentation.

Windows File Recovery: check Extensive mode and compatibility
Microsoft’s documentation lists FAT and exFAT as supported filesystems in Extensive mode. The app is a command-line tool, and Microsoft advises minimizing or avoiding computer use during recovery attempts. Consult Microsoft’s current Windows File Recovery instructions for current compatibility and availability; those details may change.

How to decide what to try
- Directory information may remain and original names matter: start with TestDisk undelete.
- TestDisk does not find the files, or the filesystem is corrupted: consider PhotoRec, accepting that filenames and folder structure are not preserved.
- You prefer Microsoft’s command-line app and can use Extensive mode: check current Windows File Recovery compatibility and follow Microsoft’s instructions.
- The drive has been used since deletion: recovery may be less likely because new writes can reuse the data area. The available documentation provides no recovery-rate statistics or universal ranking of these methods.
- You have no separate destination: obtain or identify another disk or partition before saving recovered files; writing them to the source risks overwriting data still sought.
