For under-chin fullness, FDA-approved deoxycholic acid injection and liposuction are different options; for fat on the abdomen, thighs, arms, or other body areas, FDA-approved Kybella is not an approved injectable alternative. In the United States, Kybella is approved for adults with moderate-to-severe fullness associated with submental fat—the area beneath the chin. Liposuction is surgery that can contour several localized areas, but it carries surgical risks and does not reliably correct loose skin. The right choice depends on the treatment area, anatomy, health, skin elasticity, and goals.
What is the difference between fat-dissolving injections and liposuction?
“Fat-dissolving injections” is a broad phrase, not the name of one standardized treatment. In the United States, the relevant FDA-approved injectable is deoxycholic acid (Kybella), indicated for improving the appearance of moderate-to-severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat in adults. A healthcare professional administers it. Its approved area is under the chin, not the abdomen, arms, thighs, or other body sites. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says use outside the submental region is not approved and is not recommended.

Liposuction is an operation. A surgeon removes selected fat through small incisions using a cannula. It can be used to contour areas including the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, chest, and face or neck. It treats localized fat, not obesity, and it does not reliably tighten skin that has lost elasticity.

How do their results compare?
Kybella is intended to improve the appearance of under-chin fullness associated with submental fat. The outcome depends on the person’s anatomy and clinician assessment; the available guidance does not establish a guaranteed cosmetic result or a universal amount of fat removed. Treatment may take more than one appointment, so it is not a single-session promise of a particular contour.
Liposuction changes the contour of the treated area by surgically removing localized fat. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), results can be long-lasting if weight and general fitness remain stable. Substantial weight gain can alter the result. The final contour may not be apparent immediately because swelling and fluid retention take time to subside; that process can continue for several months.
Skin quality affects what the contour looks like after either a fat-reduction procedure. Liposuction cannot improve lax skin tone, and loose or rippled skin may remain or become more noticeable after fat removal. A surgeon may determine that another procedure is needed for a particular concern. Do not treat a reduction in fat as a promise that the skin will tighten or that the result will match a photograph or a specific measurement.
There is no direct head-to-head clinical trial in the cited FDA and ASPS guidance that establishes one procedure as more effective than the other across body areas. The meaningful comparison is therefore not a single effectiveness score: first determine whether the treatment is approved and appropriate for the area, then discuss the expected contour, skin, and recovery with a qualified clinician.
The two options also differ in what “results” means in practice. Kybella is a course of injections directed at a specific under-chin concern, with reactions that can be visible between visits. Liposuction removes localized fat in an operation, followed by a recovery period in which bruising and swelling affect how the area looks. Neither description guarantees a particular degree of change, and neither is a substitute for discussing the person’s anatomy, goals, and skin elasticity with a clinician.
At a glance: which option fits which concern?
| Decision point | Deoxycholic acid injection (Kybella) | Liposuction |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. treatment area | FDA-approved for submental fat in adults | Localized fat contouring in multiple areas |
| How treatment is delivered | Healthcare-professional injections; FDA describes up to six treatments at least one month apart | Surgery using a cannula through small incisions |
| Recovery pattern | Injection-site swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, or firmness can occur | Activity restrictions, possible surgeon-directed compression, bruising, and swelling that can take months to settle |
| Important limitation | Use outside the under-chin area is not FDA-approved | Not an obesity treatment and not a reliable fix for loose skin |
| Major risk categories | Nerve, swallowing, and injection-site complications; added FDA warning about serious events with use outside the approved area | Anesthesia and surgical complications, infection, contour irregularity, and blood-clot or heart/lung complications |
This is a practical summary of FDA and ASPS guidance, not a head-to-head trial or an individualized treatment recommendation. It does not establish that one option is safer or more effective for every person. The treatment area is a central dividing line: the FDA-approved indication for Kybella is under the chin, while liposuction may be discussed for localized fat in several areas.
How many injection treatments might be needed?
The FDA’s September 15, 2026 safety communication describes up to six Kybella treatments, spaced at least one month apart. That is a maximum described by the communication, not a recommendation that everyone should have six sessions. A clinician should determine whether treatment is suitable and how to proceed based on the under-chin area and the person’s response and goals.

Because sessions are spaced at least a month apart, an injection course may extend over multiple months if several treatments are planned. Do not assume that the maximum number is necessary, or that a specific number will produce a promised result. Ask the clinician what the proposed course is intended to address, how progress will be assessed, and whether another session would be appropriate after the area has had time to respond.
Expect local reactions to be part of the treatment course rather than assume there will be no visible recovery. Swelling, bruising or hematoma, pain, numbness, redness, and induration (a firm area) are among the reactions described in FDA information. The sources do not establish a fixed downtime that applies to every patient, so ask the treating clinician what to expect for the specific treatment plan and when to seek help.
What is recovery like after liposuction?
Liposuction recovery continues after a patient feels ready to return to ordinary routines. ASPS says patients may need a compression garment or elastic bandage to help minimize swelling and support healing; use and duration should follow the operating surgeon’s instructions, not a universal schedule. Activity is significantly limited during the first week.
- First week: Plan for substantially reduced activity and follow the surgeon’s postoperative instructions, including any direction about a compression garment.
- Weeks two to three: Many patients begin feeling much better and may return to work, depending on their job and individual recovery. Work readiness does not mean exercise or unrestricted activity is appropriate.
- Weeks four to five: Bruising is expected to improve around this period. Follow the surgeon’s advice about activity rather than using bruising alone to decide when to resume it.
- Week six onward: Swelling continues to improve, and the contour may keep changing for several months as swelling and fluid retention subside.
These are general ASPS recovery milestones, not a personal timetable. The extent of surgery, the treated area, health, and the surgeon’s instructions affect recovery. Discuss work demands, caregiving, travel, and exercise plans before scheduling so restrictions can be planned realistically.
Returning to work is only one milestone. A person whose job involves physical activity may need a different plan from someone with a less strenuous role, and returning to work does not mean exercise or all normal activity can resume. Ask the surgeon which activities to limit and when to increase them. If a compression garment is recommended, clarify which garment to use and how long to wear it; there is no universal fit or duration that applies to every patient.
What are the risks of Kybella and other fat-dissolving injections?
Kybella: approved use and labeled warnings
Commonly described reactions include injection-site swelling or edema, hematoma, pain, numbness, redness, and induration. FDA labeling also warns about marginal mandibular nerve injury, which can affect the lower face; difficulty swallowing (dysphagia); injection-site reactions; vulnerable anatomic structures; and ulceration, tissue death (necrosis), or infection at the injection site. These are reasons the treatment should be administered by a healthcare professional who understands the anatomy and the product’s labeling.
In September 2026, the FDA revised Kybella labeling and highlighted serious adverse reactions associated with use outside the approved under-chin region. The communication describes reports that include blurred or reduced vision, involuntary eye contractions, muscle or nerve damage and weakness, numbness, and difficulty walking. It also reports unresolved injection-site nodules or masses: nodules are 3 cm or smaller, while masses are larger than 3 cm. Some may require medical intervention.

The FDA identified 129 reported cases of adverse events following deoxycholic acid injection outside the approved submental region and 117 reported cases of unresolved nodules or masses. For those unresolved nodules or masses, the mean duration at the time of reporting was 143 days, approximately five months. These are FDA case counts, not incidence rates: they do not show the probability that an individual patient will experience a complication.

Those figures are safety reports, not a way to calculate an individual patient’s odds. The FDA’s reports concern adverse events after use outside the approved region and unresolved nodules or masses; they do not make an unapproved body-area use equivalent to the labeled under-chin treatment. Ask whether a proposed product and treatment area match the FDA-approved indication, and do not infer approval from a clinic’s marketing or a product’s availability.
Unapproved injection products and uses
The FDA says products such as Aqualyx, Lipodissolve, Lipo Lab, and Kabelline are not FDA-approved, and the agency has not evaluated their safety or effectiveness. FDA reports associated with unapproved fat-dissolving injections include permanent scars, serious infections, skin deformities, cysts, and deep, painful knots. Unsafe injection technique or administration by someone who is not licensed can add risk. A product being advertised or available for purchase online does not establish that it is approved or safe.
The FDA’s statement is explicit about the U.S. indication: “Kybella is not approved for the treatment of subcutaneous fat outside the submental region and such use is not recommended.” It refers to U.S. approval and should not be generalized into a claim about every country’s regulatory status.
Do not try to inject these products yourself or rely on online instructions. A healthcare professional should be able to identify the product being offered, explain its approval status and intended treatment area, and discuss the risks. If a clinic proposes a different product or an area other than beneath the chin, ask directly whether that use is FDA-approved in the United States before making a decision.
What are the risks of liposuction?
Liposuction is surgery, so the risk discussion includes anesthesia and recovery from an operation as well as the desired contour change. ASPS lists possible complications including:
- Anesthesia complications, infection, poor wound healing, and fluid accumulation.
- Bruising, swelling, persistent changes in sensation, and damage to deeper structures.
- Deep-vein thrombosis and cardiac or pulmonary complications.
- Irregular contours, asymmetry, loose or rippled skin, and the possibility of revision surgery.
The likelihood and significance of these risks depend on factors such as the size of the procedure, technique, health, and provider assessment. A consultation should cover personal medical history and the specific planned operation, rather than relying on a generic risk list to determine individual safety.

Ask the surgeon to explain which risks are most relevant to the planned procedure, how the facility and care team prepare for complications, and what follow-up is included. A risk list cannot predict the result or determine whether a person is a suitable candidate. Health history, procedure size, technique, and the planned treatment area all matter to the clinician’s assessment.
Which option may be worth discussing with a clinician?
If the concern is fullness beneath the chin
Ask whether the fullness is associated with submental fat and whether FDA-approved deoxycholic acid treatment is appropriate for your anatomy and goals. Liposuction may also be discussed as a surgical contouring option, but this is a clinician’s assessment—not a conclusion that one is automatically better. Consider how you feel about repeated appointments, injection reactions, surgery, and the different recovery patterns.

If surgery is discussed, ask what recovery and activity limits are expected for the planned procedure. An individualized consultation is needed to compare options for a particular person; the treatment name alone cannot determine which is appropriate.
If the concern is the abdomen, thighs, arms, or another body area
Kybella is not FDA-approved in the United States for those areas. Do not assume an injection marketed for a different body site has been evaluated by the FDA or is equivalent to the approved under-chin treatment. If localized fat contouring is the goal, a qualified clinician can discuss whether liposuction is appropriate, whether skin laxity may limit the result, and whether another approach is more suitable.
If the main concern is weight or loose skin
Liposuction is not an obesity treatment, and removal of localized fat does not guarantee skin tightening. Bring up weight stability, skin elasticity, and the change you actually want to see. A clinician can explain what contouring can and cannot address in your case.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a clinician and prepare for a consultation
For liposuction, ASPS advises selecting a board-certified plastic surgeon and checking that the operation will take place in an appropriately accredited, state-licensed, or Medicare-certified facility. A consultation should include medical history, medications, goals, likely outcomes, and risks. Ask who will perform the procedure, what facility will be used, what recovery restrictions apply, and how complications or follow-up care are handled.
For injectable treatment, confirm that the proposed product is Kybella and that the treatment area is the approved submental region in the United States. It should be administered by a healthcare professional. Tell the clinician about prior procedures on the face, neck, or chin and relevant medical conditions; consult the current product labeling with the clinician for full precautions. Ask how many sessions are being proposed, how they will be spaced, what reactions to expect, and which symptoms require prompt contact.

Bring a clear description of the change you hope to see and ask the clinician to explain what the procedure can and cannot address. For liposuction, discuss the planned area, the effect of skin elasticity on the contour, recovery restrictions, and the possibility of persistent swelling or a need for revision. For Kybella, ask whether the product is the FDA-approved deoxycholic acid injection, whether the target is submental fat, and how the treatment course and follow-up will be decided.
- Describe the area and the specific change you want, rather than asking only which procedure is “better.”
- Ask how skin elasticity and your anatomy affect the likely contour.
- Discuss medical history, medications, prior procedures, and your recovery obligations.
- Request a clear explanation of alternatives, risks, follow-up, and what the treatment cannot accomplish.
- Do not proceed with an injection marketed for an unapproved area on the assumption that online availability means FDA approval.
When to seek medical attention
After deoxycholic acid injection, asymmetric smiling or facial weakness, difficulty swallowing, or a serious injection-site reaction warrants medical attention. The FDA’s warning also describes serious symptoms following unapproved-area use, including vision changes, involuntary eye movements, weakness or numbness, and difficulty walking; contact a healthcare professional promptly if these occur. Follow the treating clinician’s instructions for urgent or emergency symptoms, and do not wait for a routine follow-up when a serious problem develops.
After liposuction, follow the operating surgeon’s specific instructions for symptoms and follow-up. General information cannot determine whether a postoperative change is expected or signals a complication; contact the surgical team for concerns and seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Which is better for a double chin: fat-dissolving injections or liposuction?
There is no universal better choice. FDA-approved Kybella is indicated for adults with moderate-to-severe fullness associated with submental fat, while liposuction is a surgical contouring option. A clinician can assess anatomy, goals, health, skin elasticity, and tolerance for repeated injections versus surgery and recovery.
Can fat-dissolving injections be used on the stomach, thighs, or arms?
In the United States, Kybella is FDA-approved only for submental fat beneath the chin, not the stomach, thighs, arms, or other body areas. The FDA says use outside the submental region is not approved and is not recommended. Other marketed injection products may also be unapproved; online availability does not establish safety or FDA approval.
How many Kybella treatments might I need?
The FDA’s September 2026 safety communication describes up to six treatments, with at least one month between sessions. This is not a recommendation that everyone needs six. A healthcare professional should determine whether the treatment is appropriate and what course to consider.
How long is recovery after liposuction?
Recovery varies. ASPS says activity is significantly limited during the first week; many patients feel much better and may return to work in weeks two to three depending on their job. Bruising is expected to improve around weeks four to five, while swelling continues to improve from week six onward and may take several months to settle. Follow the operating surgeon’s instructions, including any direction about compression.

Kybella has labeled risks that include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, nerve injury, difficulty swallowing, and injection-site complications. The FDA’s September 2026 communication highlighted serious events and persistent nodules or masses reported after use outside the approved under-chin area. Products such as Aqualyx, Lipodissolve, Lipo Lab, and Kabelline are not FDA-approved, and the FDA has not evaluated their safety or effectiveness.
Does liposuction treat obesity or tighten loose skin?
No. ASPS describes liposuction as a procedure for localized fat contouring, not obesity treatment. It cannot improve lax skin tone, and loose or rippled skin may remain after fat removal. A clinician can discuss whether skin elasticity or another procedure affects the likely contour.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: In the United States, Kybella is FDA-approved for under-chin fat in adults, not for the abdomen, thighs, arms, or other body areas. Liposuction can contour localized fat in multiple areas but is surgery, does not treat obesity, and does not reliably correct loose skin. Both have risks, and the choice depends on the treatment area, anatomy, health, skin elasticity, goals, and a qualified clinician’s assessment.
