Tom’s Guide named Proton VPN fastest overall in its April test round, TechRadar named PrivadoVPN fastest overall by peak WireGuard throughput, and Security.org ranked NordVPN first using its own method. Those are separate publications’ results, not a shared lab verdict—and they do not establish that we independently tested these services.
Which VPNs came out fastest in 2026 tests?
The answer depends on what each publication measured. Peak throughput, speed loss, long-distance performance, and gaming responsiveness are different measures; the results below should not be combined into one league table.

In TechRadar’s comparison, Windscribe’s free service reached 1,594 Mbps using WireGuard, but the free plan has a 10 GB data limit. TechRadar also identifies ExpressVPN as its fastest OpenVPN provider and NordVPN as strongest for gaming latency and jitter. These are distinctions within that publication’s testing, not guarantees for every device or connection. TechRadar’s comparison and test details.
Why the rankings disagree
A VPN speed result reflects the setup as much as the service. Test-line capacity, hardware, server choice, route distance, protocol, time of day, and the measurement used can all change the outcome. A raw Mbps peak is not directly comparable with a percentage speed loss, latency, or jitter.

Tom’s Guide describes morning and evening tests on an uncontested 10 Gbps line, with routes from the eastern United States to a nearby VPN server and to the United Kingdom. It tested WireGuard, OpenVPN, and proprietary protocols, and also considered platform availability and domestic Wi-Fi checks. That context helps explain why its results should be read as outcomes from its own test round rather than predictions for every household. Tom’s Guide’s method and results.
AMTSO’s 2025 VPN testing guidance recommends consistent locations and transparent, reproducible speed-test tools. It says, “When measuring the network throughput of a VPN, the same location should be selected for all VPN apps,” and recommends tools such as Ookla, speed.cloudflare.com, and nperf.com for transparency and reproducibility. Choose by the kind of speed you need
Fast downloads on a nearby server
Look for local-route results and note the test’s no-VPN baseline. A high peak, such as the results reported by Tom’s Guide and TechRadar, shows what their particular test setup achieved; it does not tell you exactly how fast your own connection will be.

Prioritize results on routes similar to yours. Tom’s Guide reports Proton VPN’s 1,548 Mbps best result on a long-distance route over its 10 Gbps line, while TechRadar reports Proton VPN above 1,500 Mbps on a US-to-UK route. Different test conditions mean those figures should not be treated as a head-to-head comparison.

Gaming, calls, and other interactive tasks
Throughput is only part of responsiveness. Latency measures delay; jitter describes variation in that delay. TechRadar singles out NordVPN for gaming latency and jitter in its comparison, but the article’s result does not guarantee the same performance on your route, device, or game server. OpenVPN or a free plan
If you need OpenVPN specifically, TechRadar labels ExpressVPN its fastest OpenVPN provider in the reported comparison. For a free option, it reports Windscribe at 1,594 Mbps over WireGuard and notes the 10 GB free-plan data limit. Check that the required protocol is supported by your operating system and that the data allowance suits your use. TechRadar’s comparison.

How to judge a speed claim before choosing
- Check the baseline: A Mbps result is more informative when the no-VPN speed and test-line capacity are stated. Percentage loss is another useful view, but it is not interchangeable with peak throughput.
- Match the route: Nearby and cross-border servers can perform differently. Focus on the locations you are likely to use.
- Identify the protocol: A WireGuard result does not establish performance on OpenVPN or a provider’s proprietary protocol.
- Look for repeatability: A transparent method, common server locations, and tests at more than one time are stronger evidence than one isolated peak.
- Account for practical limits: Platform support, free-tier data caps, and current renewal terms can matter as much as a speed record. Prices and offers change and are not established by these speed results.
NordVPN’s own materials also say congestion, server selection, geographic distance, and a user’s internet connection affect observed speeds. Treat this as the provider’s methodological disclosure, not independent verification. Its page summarizes a West Coast Labs average of 817 Mbps in 2025; that figure is provider-published reporting, not a result that can be directly compared with the publications’ other test setups.
