1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA fast speed test does not guarantee that every website or app will feel fast. A test measures performance between your device or router and a particular test server at a particular time; slow browsing can still come from weak Wi-Fi, browser or device issues, network responsiveness, DNS, or the website itself. The specific “easy fix” suggested by the original headline is not identified by the available evidence, so it would be misleading to claim that one particular change solved it. Use these checks to find the cause before changing settings or buying equipment.
Why can internet feel slow when a speed test is fast?
A speed test is a snapshot of a connection to a selected endpoint, not a guarantee about every route or task. Google notes that server location affects the result; its router test measures the connection between the Wi-Fi point and Google’s servers. A strong download result therefore does not establish that a particular website, device, or connection path is performing well. Google explains how its Wi-Fi speed test works.

Download Mbps is also only one part of connection quality. Latency, packet loss, loaded latency, and jitter can affect how responsive a connection feels, especially when a task involves frequent exchanges rather than one large download. Cloudflare’s network-quality overview describes these measures alongside throughput.
First, find out whether the problem is one site or everything
Try more than one unrelated website or app on the same device. If one site is slow while others work normally, the fault may be at that site or on the route to it; a faster internet plan or a new router may not help. If several sites are slow, continue with the local checks below. Chrome Help’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes site-specific trouble from broader browser or connection problems.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Check whether Wi-Fi coverage is the bottleneck
Run the same kind of task in the room where it feels slow, then repeat it close to the router. If performance improves nearby, the wireless link or coverage is a likely factor. Distance, walls and other obstacles, frequency, device capability, interference, and competing network use can all affect Wi-Fi performance. Google’s Wi-Fi speed guidance recommends checking placement and signal conditions.
- Place the router in an open, central location rather than behind furniture or inside a cabinet.
- Notice whether thick walls, floors, or other barriers sit between the router and the affected room.
- Compare results at different times if the slowdown comes and goes; other devices and network use may be contributing.
- If using mesh Wi-Fi, check that an added point is positioned where it can still receive a good signal from the main router. A point placed in a dead zone may not solve the weak link.
Extra Wi-Fi equipment is relevant only if the problem is actually coverage. Google’s recommendations address placement and signal path, not a specific mesh product or a guaranteed improvement.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Use Ethernet to separate Wi-Fi trouble from other causes
If practical, connect a computer directly to the router with Ethernet and compare the same task. Google Fiber notes, “Keep in mind that you’ll always get the very best internet connection when you’re hardwired via Ethernet.” A wired comparison can help distinguish a Wi-Fi issue from a problem that persists on the wired connection, though it cannot by itself identify every cause.
If wired throughput is unexpectedly limited, check that the cable and router or computer ports support the speed you expect. Google identifies cabling and upstream equipment as possible bottlenecks and recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 for connections above 100 Mbps; that recommendation is conditional, not a claim that replacing any cable will improve browsing. See Google’s Ethernet cable guidance and troubleshooting steps for slow speeds.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Rule out a browser or device problem
If one browser is affected, or the same sites load normally on another device, the issue may be local rather than with your internet service. Restart the browser and device, check for browser updates, and try a private or Incognito window as a temporary comparison. If the private window behaves differently, investigate extensions or browsing data; do not treat that result as proof of a particular cause. Chrome Help lists extensions, cookies, memory use, network equipment, and site outages among possible factors in slow loading. Its Chrome troubleshooting page provides further checks.
When DNS errors appear, investigate DNS specifically
Errors such as DNS_PROBE_POSSIBLE point toward a problem resolving a website name, but they do not establish that changing DNS settings is the right fix. Check whether the error affects one site or several, and whether it occurs on more than one device. Google’s Chrome troubleshooting guidance includes DNS-related errors; change DNS settings only when the symptoms and diagnosis support that step.

When to contact your internet provider
If multiple devices and sites are affected, the slowdown also occurs over Ethernet, or a wired test is well below the service you expect, ask your ISP about an outage or service issue. Share when the problem occurs, which devices are affected, whether Ethernet changes anything, and the results of repeated tests. Google recommends contacting the ISP when expected performance is not achieved in its slow-speed troubleshooting guidance.
