Fast Internet, Yet Streaming Buffers? A Nordic Troubleshooting Guide

A fast broadband plan does not guarantee steady streaming. Test on the affected device during buffering, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, and check household demand before escalating to your ISP.

A fast broadband plan does not guarantee that a video stream will reach your TV steadily. Buffering can come from Wi-Fi inside the home, congestion elsewhere on the connection, competing household traffic, an app or device issue, or the streaming service itself. The quickest way to narrow it down is to compare results on the affected device, during the problem, and across Wi-Fi, Ethernet, services, and household load.

Why a fast connection can still buffer

A speed test measures performance along one route at one moment. Streaming follows a longer path: from the provider’s delivery network through the wider internet and your ISP to your home network and screen. A bottleneck anywhere along that route can affect playback. Netflix explains that congestion anywhere between its network and the screen can reduce quality or cause streaming problems (Netflix Help Center).

The broadband plan’s advertised rate is only one part of the picture. Congestion can arise at an internet exchange, a data center, the home router, or another point where traffic exceeds available capacity. Several simultaneous streams or other heavy household activity can add demand. Cloudflare describes these as general networking possibilities, not measurements of current Nordic providers (Cloudflare’s explanation of network congestion).

Wi-Fi conditions can also differ from one room to another. A phone beside the router may test well while a television several rooms away receives a weaker or less consistent signal. A strong result on one device or in one location therefore does not establish the connection quality at the screen that is buffering.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Diagnose the problem where it occurs

  1. Find out how widely it happens. Check whether the problem affects one app, every app on one device, or several devices. If only one device is affected, investigate its Wi-Fi signal, app, software, and streaming capability before attributing the problem to the ISP. Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance also suggests checking whether other devices are affected (Netflix Help Center).
  2. Test during buffering, on the affected device. Use the service’s in-app network check or its recommended speed test where available. Repeat the test while playback is failing, and compare consistency as well as the headline download result. A single test at a different time or on a nearby phone may not represent what the TV receives. See StreamNeo’s streaming internet speed guide.
  3. Improve the Wi-Fi conditions temporarily. Move the router and streaming device closer if possible. Place the router in an open, elevated spot and away from appliances or other wireless devices. These placement changes can help identify a weak home Wi-Fi segment; they do not address congestion farther along the route.
  4. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, if supported. Connect the streaming device directly to the router and repeat the comparison under similar conditions. A better wired result points toward Wi-Fi as a likely contributor. Poor results on both connections across multiple devices make a broader connection issue more plausible, but neither result alone proves the exact fault. Netflix advises noting whether the affected device is connected by Wi-Fi or cable when contacting an ISP (Netflix Help Center).
  5. Check the app and device. Restart the device and check for available app or system updates. Buffering may reflect an unstable connection, but a device that needs an update can also cause problems. Follow the support steps for the specific device and service.
  6. Pause other heavy household use as a test. Temporarily stop other large downloads, uploads, or streams and see whether playback changes. If it does, simultaneous demand may be contributing; the result is a clue, not proof of a particular network fault.
  7. Compare services and times. Check whether another streaming service works on the same device, and whether the affected service works at a different time. Also compare the affected device with another device and normal household use with reduced load. These comparisons help locate where the symptom appears without identifying a cause by themselves.

How much speed does streaming need?

Use the streaming service’s own current recommendations rather than treating a broadband plan’s maximum rate as a guarantee. StreamNeo’s 2026 guide quotes Netflix recommendations of 3 Mbps for 720p HD, 5 Mbps for 1080p Full HD, and 15 Mbps for 4K UHD (StreamNeo). These are Netflix playback recommendations for the listed resolutions, not universal thresholds for every service or guarantees of stable playback at exactly those measured rates. Other devices and household activity also use the connection.

The same guide quotes Google estimates of 7 Mbps for one HD stream and 25 Mbps for multiple HD streams, but gives no year for those figures. They are Google estimates, not Netflix requirements, and should not be combined with Netflix’s numbers into a single rule.

What a wired test can—and cannot—tell you

If both the router and TV or streaming device support Ethernet, a direct cable connection is a useful diagnostic comparison. If playback becomes stable on cable but not Wi-Fi, focus first on the wireless link, router placement, and signal at the device. A cable may be worth obtaining if you need one to run this test and your equipment supports it.

Ethernet is not a general cure for upstream congestion, an ISP fault, a device limitation, or a service-side problem. If wired and wireless playback both fail across several devices, changing the Wi-Fi setup alone is unlikely to explain the whole problem.

If you use a VPN

A VPN is another variable to test, not an automatic fix. NordVPN’s support guidance says a connected VPN can reduce download and upload test results and make websites or streaming videos take longer to load (NordVPN Support). Compare the same service on the same device with the VPN on and off. A difference does not, by itself, establish ISP throttling or identify the cause.

When to contact your ISP

If several devices remain affected after checking local Wi-Fi, device state, and household demand, contact your ISP. Give it useful evidence rather than only saying the plan is fast:

What this means for Nordic households

The troubleshooting steps apply across the Nordic region, but the available evidence does not establish that Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden has a particular buffering cause or comparative ISP performance. Netflix’s Swedish-language help material gives the same delivery-chain explanation as its English guidance (Netflix Help Center in Swedish). Check your own provider’s service status rather than assuming that a country or provider is inherently more prone to buffering.
