Both strategies race to finish before the opponent’s plan takes over, but they use different clocks—and neither is guaranteed to be faster in every format or matchup.
How the two strategies try to win
Aggro: pressure the opponent’s life total
Aggro decks are built to end the game before the opponent can stabilize. They commonly develop threats early and attack, aiming to reduce the opponent from 20 life to 0 mostly through combat damage. Wizards describes aggro and combo as racing in different ways: aggro’s race is about applying pressure before defenses or a longer game take over. Wizards’ aggro strategy guide

Fast combo: assemble a decisive effect
Combo is a kind of synergy strategy: the deck tries to assemble a group of cards that produces a powerful effect, usually its win condition. A fast combo deck prioritizes finding and resolving that combination rather than relying primarily on repeated attacks to finish the game. Wizards does not draw a hard boundary around what counts as a combo deck, so some decks blend combo with other plans. Wizards’ article on combo and game design
Fast combo vs. aggro at a glance
| Question | Fast combo | Aggro |
|---|---|---|
| What is the main route to victory? | Assemble and resolve a group of cards that creates a powerful effect, commonly a game-ending combination. | Apply early pressure, often through attacks, to reduce the opponent’s life total before they stabilize. |
| What is the deck racing? | Finding the needed pieces and completing its sequence. | Dealing enough damage before defenses or a longer game blunt its pressure. |
| What can cost it time? | Missing a piece or having the sequence disrupted. The exact vulnerability depends on the cards involved. | Early threats being stopped, or the deck losing time before it can apply pressure. Wizards specifically points to cheap removal, life gain and mana consistency as relevant considerations when facing aggro. |
| How might an opponent interact? | Disrupt the sequence or respond to a spell or ability, if the opponent has an appropriate card and timing opportunity. | Block threats, remove them or otherwise survive the initial assault. |
| Is the label a strict rule? | No. Combo has no hard-and-fast boundary, and synergy alone does not automatically make a deck combo. | No. Aggressive decks can also use disruption or other plans; aggro does not necessarily mean creatures and attacks only. |
What the different clocks mean in a game
Aggro’s clock is measured in pressure: how quickly its threats can make the opponent’s life total urgent, and whether that pressure lasts long enough to finish the game. Blocking, removal and life gain can slow that clock; a delayed start or inconsistent access to mana can also give the opponent time.

- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
Combo’s clock is measured in assembly: how quickly the deck can find the needed cards and complete its sequence. If a piece is missing or the sequence is disrupted, the deck may lose time, but the details depend on the particular cards. In a matchup where aggro has no way to interact with the combination, the game can become a race between aggro’s damage and combo’s assembly. Wizards also notes that combo decks may use defensive tools to buy time against attackers. Wizards’ combo design discussion
That is why “fast combo” does not mean “always faster than aggro.” Speed, resilience and interaction depend on the format and deck construction. Wizards’ statement that combo should not be faster than the fastest aggro deck in a format is a game-design guideline, not a prediction about every individual matchup. Wizards’ design discussion

Where interaction fits
Magic’s rules give players opportunities to act and respond during a turn. The turn has five phases: beginning, precombat main, combat, postcombat main and ending. Spells and abilities use priority and the stack; a spell or ability on the stack can be responded to before it resolves, subject to the rules and available cards. Current Magic rules

Removal, blockers and life gain are among the tools Wizards identifies for handling an aggressive start. Wizards’ aggro strategy guide
- Against combo: The relevant question is whether you can affect the combination—by responding to part of the sequence or disrupting it—and whether you can do so in time. The stack creates response opportunities, but it does not guarantee that a particular deck has an answer.
How to identify the plan without assuming a format
- If the deck’s central route is to establish early pressure and attack before the opponent stabilizes, it is using an aggro plan.
- If it depends on assembling specific cards for a powerful, usually game-ending effect, it is using a combo plan.
- If it does both, describe the actual plan rather than treating the labels as mutually exclusive boxes. These archetypes are useful strategic descriptions, not rigid rules.
These definitions do not establish universal kill turns, win rates or a fixed speed ranking. Those depend on the format, cards and matchup; the useful distinction is the route each deck is trying to complete.
