Agriculture’s nitrogen transition will combine precision application, biological fixation, recycled nutrients, loss-reducing products and lower-emissions ammonia, supported by better measurement, financing and policy.
Why nitrogen needs a portfolio solution
Farms need reactive nitrogen to produce food, but a large share is lost before crops can use it. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported in 2025 that humans add approximately 150 teragrams (Tg) of reactive nitrogen to land each year—more than double the pre-industrial rate. Livestock account for about one-third of human-caused nitrogen emissions.

The climate impact is also split between manufacturing and the field. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated in 2025 that fertilizer causes about 1.23 gigatonnes of carbon-dioxide equivalent emissions globally each year. Roughly 60–70% of fertilizer-related emissions occur during use, through field losses and associated processes. Cleaner factories therefore cannot solve the problem by themselves.

The main technologies in the nitrogen transition
| Option | What it does | Where it helps most | Main limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Precision agriculture | Uses soil data, sensors, yield monitors, analytics and variable-rate applicators to place fertilizer according to field variability. | Reduces over-application and can improve input efficiency and farm profitability. | Requires equipment, training, reliable data governance and systems that interoperate. |
| Biological nitrogen fixation | Legumes such as soybean or alfalfa convert atmospheric nitrogen into plant-available forms. | Rotations where the crop, climate and soil support legumes. | Benefits depend on agronomy, weather, markets and the nitrogen needs of the following crop. |
| Organic and circular nitrogen | Improves manure handling, uses organic fertilizers, recycles residues and diverts food unsuitable for people to livestock feed. | Keeps nutrients in circulation and reduces losses from wastes. | Supply, sanitation, transport, nutrient variability and application rules must be managed. |
| Efficiency practices and products | Includes inhibitors, improved nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE), better timing, crop rotation and land-sparing strategies. | Reduces losses and use-phase emissions without requiring an immediate switch away from synthetic fertilizer. | Performance depends on crop, soil, climate, product and management conditions. |
| Lower-emissions ammonia | Uses carbon capture and storage (CCS) or electrolysis to reduce emissions from ammonia production. | Cuts the manufacturing footprint of fertilizer that farms still need. | Higher current production costs, limited projects and the need for supportive policy. |
Precision agriculture reduces waste, but adoption is not automatic
Variable-rate fertilizer application is the most direct way to match inputs with differences within a field. Yield monitors map what previous crops removed; grid or zone soil sampling estimates nutrient supply; sensors and satellite or machine data can refine decisions during the season. An applicator then changes the rate across management zones instead of treating every hectare identically.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office reported that only 27% of U.S. farms or ranches used precision-agriculture practices in 2023. Its review found potential for lower fertilizer use and better profitability, but identified high upfront costs, data-sharing concerns and interoperability gaps. A farm may own a capable spreader and still struggle if its soil-test files, agronomy software and machine controller cannot exchange data.
For a precision system to reduce nitrogen rather than simply digitize the same program, a farm needs a baseline nutrient plan, calibrated equipment, clear rules for who can access field data and a process for checking whether rates changed without reducing yield.

Biological fixation and rotations add nitrogen without manufacturing it
Legume rotations are a biological complement to fertilizer. Soybean, alfalfa and other locally appropriate legumes host microbes that fix atmospheric nitrogen. The FAO recommends selecting rotations suited to local crops and climate, then accounting for the nitrogen left for the next crop rather than applying a standard rate regardless of rotation history.
Fixation does not mean every farm can eliminate purchased fertilizer. A legume may meet its own needs while contributing a residual amount to a following crop, and that contribution varies with biomass, harvest method, soil conditions and weather. Rotation planning must also consider cash flow, markets, disease cycles and the time a field is out of a primary commodity crop.
Recycling manure and organic residues closes nutrient loops
Better manure management can prevent nitrogen from escaping as ammonia or other pollutants before it reaches a crop. Covered storage, timely incorporation and matching application to crop demand are examples of management choices; the appropriate practice depends on local rules and farm design.

Organic fertilizers, composted or otherwise treated residues, and recovered nutrients from food and farm wastes can return nitrogen to production. The FAO also points to using food unsuitable for people as livestock feed, which can reduce waste while converting nutrients into manure. These systems need testing for nutrient content and contaminants, plus transport and storage capacity, because organic materials are bulky and their nitrogen availability is less uniform than a labeled mineral product.

Efficiency products target the losses that happen after application
Inhibitors can slow chemical processes that lead to nitrogen loss, while improved timing and placement keep nitrogen closer to the crop’s period of uptake. Crop rotations and land-sparing measures can reduce the amount of land and fertilizer needed for a given food output. The IEA treats these use-phase measures as essential because most fertilizer emissions occur after production, not only at the factory.
No inhibitor or application schedule works identically everywhere. Rainfall, temperature, soil texture, irrigation and crop growth stage determine whether a product prevents a loss pathway. Farmers should compare a practice with their existing timing and placement, keep records of weather and rates, and evaluate yield and residual nitrogen rather than relying on a product label alone.

Is green ammonia the future of farming?
Lower-emissions ammonia is part of the future, but it is not the whole answer. The IEA reported in 2025 that announced low-emissions ammonia projects total about 19 million tonnes—less than 10% of current global production. Without policy support, average production costs are estimated at about 30% higher for CCS-equipped routes and roughly three times higher for electrolytic routes than for conventional production.
Electrolytic, often called “green,” ammonia uses hydrogen made with electricity, while CCS-equipped production captures carbon from a conventional process. Both can reduce manufacturing emissions, but neither automatically reduces nitrous-oxide emissions from a field that receives too much nitrogen. Cleaner ammonia should therefore be paired with precision rates, efficient timing, biological sources and recycling.

A practical sequence for using less nitrogen
- Measure the starting point. Map fields, sample soil by management zone where appropriate, record application rates and compare them with yield and protein targets.
- Fix timing and placement. Apply closer to crop uptake, avoid saturated or highly runoff-prone conditions, and calibrate spreaders, sprayers or injectors.
- Test precision upgrades. Start with the fields where nutrient variability or repeated over-application is greatest; verify that data move correctly between software and equipment.
- Add biological and recycled sources. Evaluate a locally suitable legume rotation and test manure, compost or recovered nutrients for actual nitrogen content and availability.
- Use inhibitors selectively. Match a product to the loss pathway and weather pattern, then compare results with an untreated or previous-management baseline when feasible.
- Review the whole farm annually. Track purchased nitrogen, crop removal, losses, yield, quality, labor and energy so that a lower rate is not mistaken for success if production also falls.
Policy, finance and common standards determine scale
Farm technology spreads only when producers can finance it, trust the data and obtain advice. The IEA calls for common lifecycle accounting, soil-health metrics, biological standards, financing and technical assistance. Those tools would make it easier to compare a lower-emissions ammonia product with a precision or biological intervention on the same nitrogen-accounting basis.
The German Environment Agency’s 2024 report, “Fostering win-win farming practices…,” examines measures that can reduce ammonia, nitrate, nitrous oxide and methane impacts together. In the United Kingdom, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ 2024 Nutrient Management Expert Group report makes 15 recommendations spanning air quality, water quality, soil health, circular economy and net zero. Their breadth reflects the reality that nitrogen policy cannot be designed around a single pollutant or technology.
FAO Assistant Director-General Thanawat Tiensin summarized the current position: “Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) has seen improvements in recent years, which is encouraging. However, significant work remains to be done.” FAO authors likewise say sustainable nitrogen management is crucial to goals covering hunger, health, clean water, sustainable production and consumption, climate action, and life on land and underwater. Improving NUE across the agri-food chain can let more nitrogen reach its intended purpose, reduce harmful emissions and protect water bodies.

The winning model will be a managed portfolio: precise rates where field data justify them, legumes where rotations allow them, recycled nutrients where logistics and safety work, inhibitors and timing that curb losses, and lower-emissions ammonia for the synthetic nitrogen that remains necessary. Farms, manufacturers and governments will need shared measurement and practical financing to combine those pieces. Treating any one option—including green ammonia—as a universal replacement would leave major nitrogen losses untouched.
