A useful FAQ page lets people recognize their question, find the right answer quickly, and reach a person if self-service does not resolve the issue. The strongest examples do not share one template: they use different combinations of categories, search, filters, jump links, audience-specific routes, clear instructions, and visible support options.
The examples below are patterns documented in Zendesk’s 2026 roundup, not an independently measured ranking or proof that a design causes better support outcomes. Web pages change, so treat the descriptions as design ideas rather than guarantees about what a live page looks like today.

What should an FAQ page look like?
It should reflect the size and shape of the questions it answers. A short FAQ may need only clear topic headings. A long or varied library needs stronger navigation, such as search, filters, a table of contents, or separate routes for different audiences. Each answer should address a real customer task, and the page should make the next step clear when the answer is not enough.
Zendesk’s 2026 collection of 19 FAQ examples illustrates these approaches. The pages are useful to study as patterns—not as a universal ranking of the “best” designs.

What makes a good FAQ page?
It starts with questions people actually ask
Use support tickets, interaction tags, customer search terms, and frontline staff input to find recurring questions. Preserve the language customers use, whether they type a full question or a few keywords. Zendesk’s FAQ guidance says matching customer language can make FAQs more likely to surface in search. As Madison Davis, identified in the article as senior manager of content management within Zendesk’s Customer Advocacy team, puts it: “Understanding how your customers describe their issue makes it likelier that you’ll get your FAQ in front of them via search.”
It organizes answers around reader tasks
Group related questions by topic, product, or audience instead of presenting one undifferentiated list. If travelers, property owners, and property managers need different information, give them distinct routes, as in Zendesk’s description of Vrbo. A category should help readers predict where an answer will be, not merely mirror internal team names.

Answer the question directly, explain the relevant issue or concept, and provide the resolution or steps. Keep wording readable. When a task is easier to show than describe, use a screenshot or short video; Zendesk’s guidance recommends visual aids where they clarify instruction. The FAQ creation article attributes a 72% preference for visual learning when offered text versus video to Wyzowl, but does not identify the study year or provide methodological detail. That figure should not be treated as a fully specified current benchmark.

It offers a route to human help
Self-service should not become a dead end. If an answer does not solve the case, show readers how to contact support or submit a request without making them start over. Zendesk’s Wistia example highlights persistent search and a ticket route; Zendesk’s self-service documentation describes a request portal as one element of a self-service channel.
How do I make an FAQ page easier to navigate?
Choose navigation according to how much content exists and how readers need to browse it. A compact FAQ may work well with a handful of categories. A large library may benefit from search or filters. A long page can use jump links or a table of contents. Multiple audiences may need separate entry points rather than a single shared list.
| Navigation need | Pattern to consider | Example described by Zendesk |
|---|---|---|
| Readers need to narrow a large collection | Filters | McDonald’s |
| Readers need to skip through a long page | Jump links or a table of contents | Microsoft 365 and Nintendo use jump navigation; WhatsApp has a category table of contents |
| Different groups need different material | Audience-specific routes | Vrbo separates travelers, owners, and property managers |
| Readers may need an alternate answer or a person | Search and visible support escalation | Wistia’s described footer includes search and a ticket route |
Do not add navigation controls for their own sake. A small set of questions can remain easy to scan without complex filters, while an expanding library can become difficult to use if it offers no way to search or jump to a topic.

Prioritize questions that recur, block a customer from completing a task, or can be answered reliably without an individual review. Use evidence from the channels customers already use: support tickets, interaction tags, search terms, and staff who handle questions. Keep customers’ phrasing recognizable, then organize the content so a person can find an answer even if they do not know your internal terminology.

When should I turn an FAQ into a help center?
A static FAQ list is suitable for a small, stable set of common questions. A help center becomes more useful when content needs a broader structure, ongoing maintenance, or a clear service path beyond reading an answer. Zendesk describes a help center as potentially including an organized knowledge base, a request portal, and a community—not simply a longer FAQ page.
Zendesk Help’s knowledge-base guidance attributes two figures to Zendesk research from 2023: 73% of consumers want to solve product or service issues on their own, and 90% expect a brand or organization to offer a self-service customer support portal. These are vendor-attributed findings from 2023, not a current independent measurement of every audience.
Managing self-service content is an ongoing cycle: plan it, create and publish it, observe use and feedback, then revise it. Zendesk’s knowledge-base and self-service guidance presents analysis and optimization as part of the work, rather than treating launch as the finish line. Zendesk’s FAQ article also reports that Reverb saw a 50 percent decrease in per-agent contacts within seven months; the report year is not stated in the article, and this vendor-reported case example is not a result to expect from every organization.

How to choose the right FAQ pattern
- Map the audience. Identify whether one customer group or several distinct groups use the page. Separate entry points when their tasks differ.
- Estimate the content’s scale and shape. Use simple categories for a compact FAQ; add search or filters for a larger library; use a table of contents or jump links when readers must navigate a long page.
- Write from real customer language. Use recurring support questions and search terms, then keep familiar wording in headings so readers can recognize their issue.
- Match the answer format to the task. Give clear text instructions, and add a visual aid when a screenshot or short video makes a process easier to understand.
- Provide recovery and maintain the content. Make support escalation visible, gather feedback, and revise answers as needs or processes change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should every FAQ page have a search bar?
No. Search is most useful when a library is large enough that browsing categories becomes cumbersome. A short, well-organized page may be easier to scan without it.
Are accordion answers a good choice?
They can help keep a page compact, as illustrated in Zendesk’s description of Vrbo. Pair them with clear questions and navigation that lets readers locate the right item.
How often should FAQ content be updated?
There is no single interval established in the cited guidance. Review content as processes change and use customer feedback and usage analysis to identify answers that need revision.
Does an FAQ replace customer support?
No. It handles answerable recurring questions, while a visible request or contact route gives people a way forward when their situation is unresolved or individual help is needed.
