Check the chart’s date and injury notes, then compare routes, targets, and the kind of opportunities a receiver gets. A team’s personnel order and a fantasy ranking answer different questions.
Who is the WR1 on a team’s depth chart?
For a team’s listed personnel order, use a team depth chart that shows starters and reserves. CBS Sports’ wide receiver depth chart provides a team-by-team listing with player status and practice or injury notes. It is a changing snapshot, not a permanent statement about a player’s role.

For example, the CBS page accessed October 4, 2026 listed Zay Flowers as Baltimore’s WR1 and showed a hamstring practice note and questionable status for Week 4. That is a dated, week-specific example; check the live listing and current injury reports before kickoff rather than assuming the same status later.

Does WR1 mean the best fantasy start?
No. WR1 usually means the first receiver in a team’s listed order; it does not by itself establish how often he plays, how many passes come his way, or whether his role fits your league’s scoring. A nominal starter can have limited routes or targets, while another receiver may earn more opportunities in a particular role or situation.
Fantasy ranks also depend on the format. ESPN’s 2026 PDF assumes a 10-team league with one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, one flex, one kicker, one defense/special teams, and seven bench spots, using one-point-per-reception scoring. A ranking built for those assumptions may not transfer directly to a deeper league, a different lineup, or a non-PPR format.
Which wide receivers are getting routes and targets?
Start with participation, then look at opportunity. Routes run and route percentage show whether a receiver is going out on pass plays; targets show how often the quarterback looks his way. Target share puts those targets in team context, while targets per route run relates targets to routes and offers a rate-based view of how frequently routes turn into targets.

Fantasy Life’s 2026 utilization season stats includes routes, route percentage, targets, target share, targets per route run, and other opportunity measures, with player, team, and week-range filters. Its toggles between totals and percentages help distinguish accumulated volume from a player’s share of team opportunity. PFF’s September 28, 2026 usage and production report describes coverage including snap counts, routes, targets per route run, red-zone use, alignment, average depth of target, situational splits, and fantasy points.
- Routes and route percentage: Participation in the passing game. A target count is harder to interpret if you do not know how often the player ran a route.
- Targets and target share: The volume of looks and the receiver’s portion of the team’s target opportunities.
- Targets per route run: A rate that relates targets to routes, useful alongside—not instead of—the underlying counts.
Read counts and rates together. A high total can reflect many opportunities; a high percentage can reflect a large role even when the total is smaller. Neither measure alone guarantees fantasy production, and the sources do not establish a universal route-share or target-share threshold for a useful start.
What kind of targets is the receiver earning?
Opportunity is not all the same. Air yards and average depth of target (ADOT) describe how far downfield a receiver is targeted. End-zone targets indicate chances near the goal line, while third- and fourth-down targets show involvement in those situations. Catchable targets help put raw target totals in context.

These measures can explain a role, but they do not replace routes and overall target volume. A receiver with downfield opportunities may have a different profile from one with shorter, more frequent targets; end-zone or late-down involvement is additional context, not proof that points will follow.

How should I compare two receivers?
Compare the same date range where possible, and use several signals rather than choosing by depth-chart label alone.
- Check availability. Read the player’s current active, questionable, out, or injured-reserve status and any return estimate. Status can change during the week, so confirm it near lineup lock.
- Check participation. Compare snaps, routes, and route percentage to see who is actually on the field and running pass routes.
- Compare opportunity. Look at targets and team target share, then use targets per route run as a complementary rate.
- Identify opportunity type. Consider ADOT, air yards, catchable targets, end-zone targets, and third- or fourth-down involvement.
- Review the trend and context. Compare multiple recent weeks rather than treating one unusual game as a settled role. Account for teammates, game situation, and any role change. This is a practical rule of thumb, not a fixed statistical cutoff.
- Apply your league settings. Match the evidence to your scoring and lineup depth; a format-specific fantasy rank is not universal.
Why one game or one label can mislead
A depth chart describes listed order; it does not measure weekly route participation or target volume. A single game can also be shaped by its script, teammate availability, or a temporary change in role. Use the chart to orient yourself, usage data to judge participation and opportunities, and recent weeks to see whether the pattern is persisting. No single metric in these sources is presented as a guaranteed predictor of fantasy points.
