1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart the healthy backup when the limited running back’s availability or workload is genuinely uncertain and the backup has a credible, reasonably clear role. Start the limited back when he is expected to play his usual role and projects better in your league. An injury tag alone does not settle the choice: compare availability, expected opportunity, scoring, and the risk you can afford.
Check availability, but don’t mistake it for a workload forecast
Use the NFL’s official injury report to check practice participation and game status. Those are separate fields: a practice designation describes participation, while game status addresses availability. Neither, by itself, tells you how many snaps or touches the player will get.

Recheck the report as kickoff approaches because information can change during the week. If the player is questionable, treat his availability as uncertain and have an alternative ready rather than assuming he will play or sit.

The limited running back
Look for a team statement or reliable role report that addresses snap or touch management. Being active does not guarantee a normal workload, and limited practice does not establish that a workload cap exists. A returning player may have a reduced role, but that is a general fantasy caution—not a guarantee about a particular player or injury.

The healthy backup
Check a current depth chart and its player-specific notes. For example, CBS Sports’ running back depth chart separates starters, backups, and reserves. That listing can help establish a player’s place in the room, but the word “backup” does not prove he will receive a full workload. Check whether another reserve is also expected to get carries or targets.
Compare expected points in your league
Compare both players using projections for your actual scoring format and the same week. Account for how your league values rushing, receiving, and touchdowns; a projection from a different format may not answer your lineup question. If your fantasy service provides starter-versus-bench comparisons, use them as one input, not as a guarantee of what will happen. NFL Fantasy describes its Best Available projections as showing the point difference a player could make as a starter or bench option, with views for this week, future weeks, the rest of the season, and playoffs. Confirm the feature is currently available before relying on it.

Also consider matchup and game context, but don’t let a favorable matchup outweigh a major gap in expected opportunity without a reason. There are no player names, league settings, or week specified here, so a numerical projection or definitive player-specific pick would be guesswork.

| Situation | Lean | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The limited back is expected to keep his usual role and projects clearly better. | Limited back | The practice limitation alone does not establish a reduced fantasy workload. |
| The limited back’s role is explicitly capped or remains uncertain, while the backup has a credible role. | Healthy backup | Clearer opportunity can be more valuable than a nominally better player with an unclear workload. |
| The backup’s role is also uncertain or shared among several reserves. | Compare projections and alternatives | “Healthy” and “backup” do not establish a dependable volume advantage. |
Then account for your risk tolerance. If you are favored or want a steadier expected opportunity, lean toward the role that is clearer. If you are an underdog and need upside, accepting more uncertainty may be reasonable. These are strategic trade-offs, not universal rules.
