A family of four was among the occupants rescued from two cars trapped in rising floodwater beneath the York Street bridge in South Melbourne on Thursday afternoon, 1 October 2026. The incident was reported during a heavy-rain event; paramedics said no injuries were reported at the scene.
What happened beneath the York Street bridge?
According to the incident report, emergency services arrived at about 3:20 pm after two cars became trapped in rising water beneath the York Street bridge. Police rescued the occupants of both vehicles, including a family of four. Paramedics reported no injuries at the scene. The family was not identified, and the report does not establish their later condition.
The report also said Victorian SES had received more than 120 calls for help on Thursday afternoon, with most coming from Malvern and Port Phillip. That is a Thursday-afternoon count, not the total for the full rain event.
How much rain was recorded in Melbourne?
The Bureau of Meteorology’s current October observations table for Melbourne Olympic Park station 086338 lists 48.4 mm of rainfall on 2 October 2026. It records 0.2 mm on 1 October and 8.8 mm on 3 October, for 57.4 mm across 1–3 October at that station.

An earlier The Age follow-up reported a preliminary 47.8 mm figure for the Olympic Park gauge and described 1 October as Melbourne’s wettest day in more than two years. The BOM’s current daily table lists 48.4 mm for 2 October. These are figures reported at different times; the BOM table is the current station record cited here. Neither figure, by itself, establishes an all-time rainfall record for Melbourne as a whole.
How extensive were the calls for help?
The two reported totals use different time windows. The contemporaneous incident report counted more than 120 SES calls on Thursday afternoon. The Age follow-up reported around 200 calls answered by Victorian SES from midday Thursday, 1 October, to 7 am Friday, 2 October. It broke those down as 71 building-damage calls, 52 flooding calls and 45 reports of fallen trees. They should not be read as contradictory counts.

The follow-up also attributed to senior meteorologist David Crock an estimate that about 20 to 25 mm fell in roughly an hour around 3 pm. It reported a flood watch for many eastern Victorian catchments and forecast further heavy rain at the time. Those were statements and forecasts made during the event, not current warnings.

No. A Victorian SES spokesperson, quoted in the incident report, urged people not to drive in the conditions and to “never enter floodwater.” The warning is straightforward: do not attempt to drive or walk through floodwater, even if it looks shallow. Find another route and follow current instructions from emergency authorities.

The Age follow-up attributed this warning to an SES spokeswoman: “It only takes 15 centimetres of water for a small car to float.” It also quoted her saying, “Don’t put the lives of the community in danger.” That wording is reproduced from the media report rather than independently verified against an original SES publication.
