Agree on one in advance, then verify suspicious requests through a separate contact route you already trust before sending money, credentials, or sensitive information.
Why a familiar voice or face is no longer enough
Deepfakes can synthesize speech or alter faces, and convincing media may look or sound authentic. That makes an unexpected, urgent request worth verifying even when it appears to come from someone you know. The Federal Trade Commission said in an April 2024 article that “there is no single solution” to voice-cloning risk.

For a household, the practical goal is not to identify every fake by sight or sound. It is to put a pause between the request and any action that could cause harm.
How to set up a family code word
- Choose it together during a calm moment. Agree on a private word or phrase that family members can use to check an unexpected request. Saudi Arabia’s Data and AI Authority names family-specific code words in its Deepfakes Guidelines Version 1.0; the available guidance supports the idea, but does not establish a measured success rate.
- Decide what the check means. Make clear that a caller who cannot provide the word does not automatically prove they are an impostor, and that knowing the word does not automatically prove a request is safe.
- Keep it private. Do not post the code publicly or share it in a place outsiders can easily access. If you keep a written record of the family procedure, secure it and avoid leaving the secret itself where a visitor could find it.
- Agree on a backup. Decide in advance how to verify if someone forgets the word, the word may have been exposed, or a legitimate family member cannot use it.
What to do when an urgent request arrives
- Pause before acting. Treat pressure to send money, reveal credentials, or share sensitive information as a reason to slow down, not as a reason to skip verification.
- Use the family check if appropriate. Ask for the agreed word or follow the alternative procedure your household chose. Treat the result as one clue, not a guarantee.
- Initiate contact independently. Hang up or leave the message thread, then contact the person using a saved number or another channel you already know is theirs. Do not rely on a callback number supplied in the suspicious call or message.
- Ask another trusted person if uncertainty remains. A separate family member can help confirm the situation through their own known contact route.
- Act only after verification. If you cannot independently confirm the request, do not send money or sensitive information on the caller’s instructions.
How the main checks differ
| Method | What it checks | Useful role | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family code word | A shared private detail | Adds a quick household verification step | It may be guessed, overheard, exposed, forgotten, or unavailable to a legitimate caller |
| Callback through a saved contact | Whether you can reach the person through a separate, known route | Lets you check the request without relying on the suspicious call or message | It depends on having a trusted route and does not make every request safe by itself |
| Deepfake detection | Signs in media that may indicate manipulation | Can help analyze a clip or image | It analyzes media rather than independently verifying who is making a request |
| Provenance or authentication signals | Information about content origin or handling | Can add clues about a file’s source or alteration | Such signals are not universal proof that content is true or that a request is safe |
Why visual checks and automated detectors are not enough
Trying to spot odd blinking, glitches, or other visual flaws is not a dependable primary defense. The U.S. Government Accountability Office reported in its March 11, 2024 Science & Tech Spotlight: Combating Deepfakes that current detection technologies have limited effectiveness in real-world conditions. Lighting, facial expression, media quality, and a generation method unlike the detector’s training data can all affect accuracy. GAO also notes that detection alone may not prevent abuse or stop misinformation from spreading.

- Advanced Multi-function Detector: Combines hidden camera detector, gps detector, and bug detector functions to uncover hidden surveillance devices with precision; Anti-theft,anti-illegal intrusion and lighting functions, ideal for travel security
- Wide Frequency Coverage: Detects wireless signals from 1mhz to 6.5ghz, ensuring no hidden camera or bug escapes detection, perfect for home, office,or travel use
- Adjustable Sensitivity: Six levels let you fine-tune the detector for accurate results, whether scanning for spy cameras or gps trackers in any environment
- Multiple Alarm Modes: Switch between sound and vibration alerts at any time,so you can still detect normally even in environments that require absolute silence; the High-brightness LED light helps you easily locate devices in the dark
- Long Battery Life: Enjoy up to 25 hours of continuous use on a single charge, with fast 1-hour recharge capability—ideal for extended travel or professional use
That makes identity verification important: a detector’s assessment of a clip is different from checking through a trusted channel whether the person actually made the request. Use a detector, if available, as a possible clue—not as the deciding authority.
Where technical safeguards fit
Technical approaches can complement household habits. NIST’s Reducing Risks Posed by Synthetic Content: An Overview of Technical Approaches to Digital Content Transparency (NIST AI 100-4, published November 20, 2024; publication page updated April 8, 2026) surveys content authentication and provenance, synthetic-content labels such as watermarking, detection, testing, and auditing. These methods may help provide information about a file’s origin or whether it has been altered, but they do not mean every image or recording carries verifiable provenance.

NIST’s identity-proofing standard, SP 800-63-4, also describes deepfake and injection risks in remote workflows that use captured media. It calls for safeguards such as media analysis, authenticated protected channels, and random human-in-the-loop cues in attended remote collection. Those are requirements for service providers and identity-proofing contexts, not instructions for households to replicate. The standard cautions that a biometric comparison by itself does not prevent these attacks and that technical safeguards do not cover every possible case.
