Choose Fallout 4 for a protagonist-led story in the Commonwealth; choose Fallout 76 for an online wasteland with quests you can tackle solo and activities you can share with other players. The key distinction is not whether you can play alone, but whether you want a more self-contained adventure or a changing online world.
Fallout 76 vs. Fallout 4 at a glance
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A story centered on one protagonist in the Commonwealth | Fallout 4 | Bethesda frames it as the Sole Survivor’s fight to survive and shape the post-nuclear Commonwealth. Bethesda’s Fallout 4 page |
| An online world with events and organized group activities | Fallout 76 | It is an online multiplayer RPG with Public and Private Teams, events and other shared activities. Bethesda’s multiplayer guide |
| To quest without joining a group | Either | Fallout 76 supports solo questing, though its world remains online and multiplayer by design; Fallout 4 is the story-focused alternative. Bethesda’s Fallout 76 guide |
| A current edition with bundled official add-ons and curated Creations | Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition | Bethesda says it includes the base game, six official add-ons and more than 150 curated Creation Club items. Bethesda’s launch announcement |
What is different about playing Fallout 76?
Fallout 76 puts you in an online multiplayer world. That does not mean you must join a party to pursue quests: Bethesda says players can seek out quests solo or take on group activities. The distinction is that the world is online and built to include other players, rather than being a self-contained protagonist-led campaign.

Solo quests are possible; group play is optional
Bethesda’s multiplayer guide describes Public and Private Teams of up to four players, alongside events and shared activities. Teaming up is a way to play, not a prerequisite for every quest. If your main concern is whether you can explore and quest without arranging co-op, the answer is yes; if you want an entirely offline, standalone world, that is not what Fallout 76 offers. The game’s current state can change
As of October 4, 2026, Bethesda’s official Fallout 76 page features The Slasher and Season 26. Its August 18, 2026 announcement said The Slasher would arrive September 15 and described a Gen 9 boost for console players, unique weapon crafting and Legacy Seasons. These are current-version and publisher-announced details, not a measured performance comparison with Fallout 4; seasons and roadmaps can change. What is different about playing Fallout 4?
Fallout 4 follows the Sole Survivor through the Commonwealth, with the player fighting to survive, exploring the region and deciding its fate. That makes it the clearer fit if you want one central protagonist and a more contained story rather than an evolving shared world. Bethesda’s Fallout 4 page
Anniversary Edition bundles substantial add-on content
Bethesda lists Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition with the base game, six official add-ons and more than 150 curated Creation Club items. Those are the publisher’s content counts; they do not establish comparative quality or a particular amount of playtime. The edition is listed for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch 2. Bethesda also announced a physical code-in-box Switch 2 edition. Check the store listing for your region and platform, since listing, retailer stock and format availability can vary. Bethesda’s February 24, 2026 launch announcement

Platform details may affect your choice
Bethesda’s April 2024 update notice describes native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S applications, performance and quality modes, and PC improvements. Later patches may supersede some technical details, so check the current store and platform information for the version you intend to play. These publisher notes do not provide a direct performance comparison against Fallout 76. Bethesda’s Fallout 4 update announcement
Which should you play first?
Choose Fallout 4 if…
- You want to follow a central protagonist through a Commonwealth story.
- You would rather play a more self-contained open-world RPG than spend time in a shared online world.
- You want the Anniversary Edition’s bundled add-ons and curated Creation Club items, and its platform options suit you.
Choose Fallout 76 if…
- You like the idea of an online world that changes over time.
- You want the option to join friends or other players for teams, events and shared activities.
- You are comfortable with an online multiplayer design even when you plan to quest solo.
If you are undecided
Ask whether the presence of an online shared world is a feature you want or a condition you would rather avoid. Solo questing makes Fallout 76 viable for players who do not want to party up, but it does not turn it into the same kind of self-contained campaign as Fallout 4. If neither format is a deal-breaker, compare the current platform listing and, for Fallout 4, the contents of the specific edition on sale.

What the comparison cannot establish
There is no reliable, directly comparable benchmark here for performance, story quality or value, so a universal winner would be misleading. The strongest basis for choosing is the kind of play each game is built around: a central Commonwealth story in Fallout 4, or an online shared world with solo and group options in Fallout 76.
