After leaving Vault 76, follow the opening route to the Wayward, then continue through the Responders quests in Flatwoods. Along the way, learn the basics by building a modest C.A.M.P., scrapping unwanted gear, tagging useful crafting components and trying perk cards. You do not need a finished character build or to tackle every newly opened story branch right away.
Start here after leaving Vault 76
Follow the route to the Wayward
Speak with Pennington, meet Lacey, and visit the Wayward. The opening quest, “Wayward Souls”, introduces the people and situation you will encounter there; after the confrontation, talk to Duchess. Lacey can give you a free weapon if you ask, according to Bethesda’s quest guide.

Continue with First Contact and the Responders
Next, follow “First Contact” to the Overseer’s C.A.M.P. and onward to Flatwoods. There, follow the Overseer’s log and register as a volunteer with the Responders. This gives you a clear early story route and a chance to learn the map and core systems without turning your first hours into a search for distant markers.

Make a practical C.A.M.P.
Set up a modest base for crafting and storage rather than waiting to build an elaborate home. C.A.M.P. plans can come from quests, events, vendors and other players, so your first setup can grow as you play. When you need particular materials, tag those components in the Pip-Boy; the game can then flag them while you scavenge. Bethesda’s C.A.M.P. guide covers these basics.

Scrap before you stash junk
At a crafting station, use “Scrap All Junk” before moving materials into your Stash. For weapons and armor you do not need, consider scrapping them at a workbench: Bethesda says this can teach you mods. Keep or sell excess equipment when that better suits your immediate needs; scrapping every item is not a universal rule. This approach, recommended in Bethesda’s beginner tips and C.A.M.P. guide, helps make room and supports crafting.
Try perk cards before you specialize
Early SPECIAL and perk choices are a chance to experiment, not a permanent commitment. Bethesda’s newcomer guide, published June 10, 2021, says characters gain a SPECIAL point each level through level 50, and that Punch Card Machines unlock at level 25 for resetting SPECIAL and perk selections. Bethesda identifies level 50 as the point when the highest-level perk cards and max-level gear become available. Those are game progression milestones, not a reason to delay playing your way; use them as context for when to plan a more deliberate build.

Use social features only if they help
Bethesda recommends joining a Public Team and using other players’ C.A.M.P.s as map travel points. Both are optional conveniences: you do not have to play socially or follow other players to progress. The cited beginner tips recommend the features but do not establish exact current numerical bonuses, so focus on the practical benefit of team options and travel access rather than assuming a particular reward.

What you can safely postpone
Level-20 story branches
Do not treat every new quest marker as the next required step. Bethesda says the Wastelanders main story opens at level 20 in Sutton, while Steel Dawn begins at level 20 at Fort Atlas; Steel Dawn does not require prior Fallout 76 quest content. These are additional branches, not prerequisites for following the Wayward and Responders opening route. See Bethesda’s pages for Wastelanders and Steel Dawn.

Public Workshops as a substitute for your C.A.M.P.
Workshops can offer building and resource opportunities, but they are public locations other players can contest. Bethesda notes that contesting can initiate PvP within the Workshop build area. Treat a Workshop as an optional activity with that risk, not as a private plot or a safe replacement for your personal C.A.M.P.; see the C.A.M.P. guide.
