Choose Fallout 4 if you want a mainly solo, story-led RPG with companions, factions and settlements to build. Choose Fallout 76 if you want an online wasteland you can explore alone or with friends, with team activities and continuing seasonal updates. You do not need a team to play Fallout 76.

Choose Fallout 4 for a self-contained, story-led adventure
Bethesda frames Fallout 4 around the Sole Survivor exploring the Commonwealth and deciding its fate. Its appeal is a more traditional single-player structure: follow the central story, meet companions, engage with factions and shape settlements. Bethesda describes more than a dozen companions, along with weapons, power armor and settlement customization on its official Fallout 4 page.

The current Anniversary Edition is the clearest package to check if you want the base game and official add-on content together: Bethesda lists six expansions and more than 150 Creation Club items. The page names add-ons including Far Harbor, Automatron, Vault-Tec Workshop and Nuka-World. Confirm the edition and its availability for your platform and region on the live store listing before buying.

Choose Fallout 76 for online play and an evolving world
Fallout 76 is set in Appalachia, where Vault Dwellers emerge 25 years after the bombs. Bethesda describes it as an open-world multiplayer addition to the series and highlights quests, exploration, C.A.M.P. building and crafting in its official overview. That online structure makes it the better fit if you want to adventure with friends or encounter other players, and its seasons and updates offer a continuing reason to return.

Playing with others is optional. Bethesda’s September 2024 multiplayer guide says you can go alone or team up. Public and Private Teams support up to four players; the guide describes benefits that include sharing perk cards, experience and caps. If you are deciding based on social play, the useful distinction is therefore not “solo or multiplayer,” but whether you want an online world with the option of cooperating.
What to know before you buy
Fallout 4 editions and platforms
Bethesda’s current page lists the Anniversary Edition for Xbox, PC, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch 2. A platform’s store page is the best place to confirm the precise edition offered in your region. Bethesda’s April 11, 2024 next-gen update announcement documented native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S apps, performance and quality modes, stability improvements and fixes; PC updates included widescreen and ultra-widescreen support and fixes. Those release notes describe that update, not a current performance comparison between the games or across every platform.

Fallout 76 base game and Fallout 1st
Bethesda’s purchase page describes the Fallout 76 core game as including the base game and all updates. Fallout 1st is a separate premium membership offering private worlds and other benefits; those benefits are available to owners while membership is active. Bethesda does not present membership as a prerequisite for the base game, so decide whether its specific extras matter to you rather than treating it as part of the entry requirement.
