A game that will not reach the main menu, one save that will not load, and an infinite loading screen after installing DLC need different troubleshooting. Choose the instructions for your platform below, and protect your save files before clearing any data.
First, identify when Fallout 4 gets stuck
Use the failure point to choose a relevant fix rather than trying every platform’s steps:

- Before or at the main menu: Restart the game first. On Xbox, Bethesda also documents an offline launch option for a main-menu hang. On PC, its guidance for a crash at the “Please Stand By…” screen addresses startup crashes, not every loading-screen hang.
- While loading one save: Try an earlier or unmodded save where available. On Xbox, disable mods and follow Bethesda’s save-specific steps.
- After changing mods or Creations: Test with mods disabled. If that resolves the problem, re-enable them cautiously, especially after a game update.
- After installing DLC on PlayStation: Follow the DLC-specific reinstall sequence below. It is not a general fix for unrelated loading problems.
These official instructions were available from Bethesda Support when accessed on October 7, 2026; the pages reviewed did not show publication or revision dates. Support steps and console menus can change, so check the linked Bethesda article if a label or option differs on your system.

Xbox: loading problems after mods or Creations
If Fallout 4 will not start or load after you activated multiple mods, Bethesda recommends clearing the game’s Reserved Space. This removes local mod data, not your actual save files. Bethesda’s warning is explicit: “When doing this make sure you do not delete your actual save file.” Follow the support article’s instructions carefully: Bethesda Support: Fallout 4 won’t load or start after activating mods.

- Use the Xbox storage-management steps in Bethesda’s article to clear Fallout 4’s Reserved Space. Do not choose or delete your saved-game data.
- Restart the game and check whether it loads.
- If it still fails, power-cycle the Xbox and try again. Bethesda suggests reinstalling the game if these steps do not resolve the issue.
- If the game now loads, add mods back in small batches so you can identify a problematic change. Bethesda cautions that downloading more than 10 mods at once carries risk in this specific support guidance; it is not a universal stability threshold.
Xbox: one save will not load
If the game reaches its menus but hangs on a particular save, use Bethesda’s save-specific sequence rather than assuming all saved data is damaged. Modded saves are marked [M]. Start with a different, earlier, or unmodded save if you have one, and avoid deleting actual saves while troubleshooting. See Bethesda Support: Fallout 4 save will not load on Xbox One.
- Power-cycle the Xbox.
- Disable mods, then try loading the affected save.
- Try an earlier save or one that is not modded, if available.
- If the problem continues, consider clearing Fallout 4’s Reserved Space to remove local mod data. Do not delete saved-game data.
Xbox: the main menu is stuck loading
For a hang while loading the Xbox main menu, Bethesda’s options are to quit and restart Fallout 4, power-cycle the console, or launch the game offline so it uses local save data. Offline play has a trade-off: Bethesda warns, “No save files located on the Xbox cloud will be available.” If you use this option, review Bethesda’s separate instructions for syncing cloud saves again afterward: Bethesda Support: Fallout 4 stuck loading main menu on Xbox One.
PlayStation: infinite loading after installing DLC
Use this procedure only if the infinite loading screen began after installing Fallout 4 DLC. Bethesda instructs players to uninstall and redownload the DLC one at a time, in this order, loading and saving after each installation before moving to the next. Removing DLC may require uninstalling the base game. Follow Bethesda’s current steps at Bethesda Support: Fallout 4 infinite loading screen after installing DLC.

After installing each DLC, launch the game, load a save, and save the game before installing the next one. Do not apply this order as a generic remedy for a hang unrelated to DLC installation.

PC: startup crash at “Please Stand By…”
Bethesda’s PC support page covers a crash at the “Please Stand By…” screen. Its suggestions are reasonable starting points for that startup-crash context, but they are not a confirmed cure for every PC save-loading hang. See Bethesda Support: Fallout 4 crash at Please Stand By screen on PC.
- Check that the PC meets Fallout 4’s system requirements.
- Install current graphics drivers.
- Remove mods while troubleshooting.
- If you modified the game’s INI files, restore them to their default settings.
- Try borderless windowed mode.
- If the crash continues, Bethesda suggests contacting Support with a DxDiag file.
Protect saves and choose the least disruptive next step
Before changing data or reinstalling content, distinguish local mod data from saved games. Clearing Xbox Reserved Space is intended to remove mod data; it is not a reason to delete actual saves. If you are unsure which storage item you are selecting, stop and consult Bethesda’s platform-specific instructions rather than guessing.

Prefer a reversible check first: restart the game, test another save, or disable mods. Reinstalling Fallout 4 or DLC is more disruptive and should be reserved for the platform-specific cases where Bethesda recommends it. On Xbox, an offline launch can help diagnose a main-menu hang, but cloud saves are unavailable until you reconnect and resync.
