Falcon 9 and Electron serve very different launch needs: Falcon 9 is a heavy-lift rocket for large payloads and crew or cargo missions, while Electron is designed for small satellites. SpaceX publishes Falcon 9 capacities of 22,800 kg to low Earth orbit (LEO) and 8,300 kg to geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO); Rocket Lab lists Electron for payloads up to 300 kg to a range of LEO orbits. Those manufacturer figures describe different mission conditions, not a controlled, like-for-like test.
Falcon 9 vs. Electron at a glance
| Comparison | Falcon 9 | Electron |
|---|---|---|
| Published payload capability | 22,800 kg to LEO; 8,300 kg to GTO; 4,020 kg to Mars, according to SpaceX. | Up to 300 kg to a range of LEO orbits, according to Rocket Lab’s Version 7.0 guide. |
| Vehicle dimensions | 70 m tall and 3.7 m in diameter, according to SpaceX. | Rocket Lab’s cited guide describes it as a small-satellite launcher but does not provide directly comparable dimensions in the cited information. |
| Stages and propulsion | Two stages; LOX/RP-1 propellants; nine Merlin engines on the first stage and one Merlin Vacuum engine on the second. | Two stages; LOX/RP-1 propellants; Rutherford engines. |
| Recovery and reuse | SpaceX describes first-stage recovery and reflight, as well as fairing recovery. | Routine first-stage reuse is not established in Rocket Lab’s cited Version 7.0 guide. |
| Orbital delivery | The second-stage engine can restart multiple times to place payloads in different orbits, according to SpaceX. | An optional Kick Stage can deploy multiple payloads into distinct orbits and perform orbital maneuvers, according to Rocket Lab. |
These are manufacturer-published capabilities, not results from a shared test. A rocket’s deliverable payload depends on the target orbit and mission configuration, so the headline LEO figures should not be treated as a guaranteed capacity for every flight.

How much more can Falcon 9 lift?
On the published LEO figures, Falcon 9’s 22,800 kg capacity is 76 times Electron’s stated maximum of 300 kg. That arithmetic compares SpaceX’s LEO figure with Rocket Lab’s maximum for a range of LEO orbits; it does not establish a same-orbit, same-mission performance ratio. Falcon 9 also publishes separate capacities for GTO and Mars, while Electron’s cited guide frames its capability around LEO small-satellite missions.

How their designs differ
Falcon 9: larger payloads and a recoverable first stage
SpaceX describes Falcon 9 as a reusable, two-stage rocket for carrying people and payloads to Earth orbit and beyond. Its first stage has nine Merlin engines and tanks for liquid oxygen and rocket-grade kerosene (RP-1). The second stage uses one Merlin Vacuum engine, which SpaceX says can restart multiple times to support delivery to different orbits.
The reuse claim applies to the first stage: SpaceX describes the booster returning to a landing zone or droneship for reflight and says it recovers fairings. The cited vehicle description does not establish that the second stage is reusable.

Electron: a small-satellite launcher with a Kick Stage option
Rocket Lab’s Electron Payload User’s Guide, Version 7.0, describes Electron as a two-stage LOX/RP-1 vehicle powered by Rutherford engines and designed for small satellites weighing up to 300 kg in a range of LEO orbits. Rocket Lab presents both dedicated launch and rideshare as options for small-satellite operators.

That is an orbital-placement feature; it does not raise Electron’s stated launch-vehicle payload capacity.

Which rocket fits a mission?
The useful comparison is not simply “big versus small.” Start with the destination orbit and payload, then consider the launch arrangement and any orbital insertion needs.
- Payload and destination: Compare the mass required for the specific target orbit, not just each rocket’s largest published number.
- Dedicated launch or rideshare: Rocket Lab identifies both options for small-satellite customers. The cited sources do not establish a complete, current, like-for-like price comparison.
- Orbital placement: Consider whether a mission needs deployment into distinct orbits or additional orbital maneuvers, for which Rocket Lab describes the Kick Stage.
- Vehicle recovery: Falcon 9’s first-stage recovery and reflight are documented by SpaceX. The cited Electron guide does not establish routine first-stage reuse.
These sources do not provide a like-for-like comparison of current launch prices, schedules, or mission-specific performance. Those factors should be checked against the requirements and terms for the particular mission rather than inferred from payload capacity alone.
