For a Trezor hardware wallet, enter the backup only when the Trezor device prompts you. Any unsolicited request to reveal it is a serious warning sign.
What does a fake wallet app look like?
It may look indistinguishable from the genuine app: the same name, logo, layout, and screens. Lucien Bourdon, identified by U.Today as a Bitcoin Analyst at Trezor, told the publication: “It looks exactly like the real one: same logo, same layout, same screens, often the same name in search results or an app store.” A familiar interface is not proof that an app or page is authentic.

The interview describes several ways scammers try to get a wallet backup:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A message claims a security update or vulnerability requires you to recover your wallet immediately.
- A fake recovery screen asks for the words before you have chosen to restore a wallet.
- An airdrop page offers a reward in exchange for entering the words.
- A sponsored search result or app-store listing leads to software imitating a known wallet.
- A printed letter with wallet-company branding and a QR code directs you to a counterfeit recovery page.
- Malware on a computer displays a fake page inside an otherwise genuine app.
Bourdon said AI tools have made convincing copies quicker and cheaper to build, but the interview gave no measured estimate of the effect. The interview also reported that an August fake Trezor Suite campaign was associated with about 24 BTC across roughly 80 deposits at one address, and that approximately $9.5 million was lost after about 50 people downloaded a fake Ledger Live app listed on Apple’s Mac App Store in April. Those figures are claims reported in the October 2, 2026 U.Today interview; they were not independently verified here.

When should you use a wallet backup?
A wallet backup—also commonly called a seed phrase or recovery phrase—is the ordered information used to restore access to a wallet. Trezor says it now uses “wallet backup” for these words. A legitimate reason to use it is that you have decided to recover your wallet, for example after losing, damaging, or wiping a device.
The key test is who initiated the recovery. You should be restoring because you need to regain access, not responding to an unsolicited warning, reward, or request. As Bourdon put it: “Your seed phrase or wallet backup exists to get your wallet back, and only when you’re the one who went looking for it. Anything else asking for it is a scam, no matter how convincing it looks.”

Where should you enter the backup?
The correct recovery process depends on the wallet type. Do not treat instructions for one kind of wallet as universal:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Wallet type | Where recovery may happen | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Trezor hardware wallet | Trezor’s guidance says to enter the backup only when prompted by the Trezor device, following the instructions shown on that device. | Do not type or paste the backup into a computer or phone because an app, website, or message requests it. |
| Software wallet | The interview notes that recovery for a software wallet running on a computer or phone may legitimately require entering the phrase on that device. | Start recovery yourself and verify the wallet and its recovery instructions through the provider’s official channels. The Trezor device-only rule is not a universal rule for software wallets. |
Trezor’s official guidance is explicit: “Never enter your wallet backup anywhere unless prompted by your Trezor device.” It also says: “We will never ask you for your wallet backup, even if you are speaking with our customer support.” Read Trezor’s wallet-backup guidance and its recovery instructions for Trezor Safe devices for the device-specific process.

How to handle a suspicious wallet message
- Do not act through the message. Avoid its links, QR codes, attachments, and phone numbers. Do not disclose the backup, even if the message looks urgent or uses familiar branding.
- Navigate to the provider yourself. For a Trezor concern, type trezor.io into your browser rather than using the message’s link, then find support from the site. The interview describes Trezor’s position that its support does not contact users first; treat that as Trezor-specific guidance, not a rule for every wallet provider.
- Check the device’s own prompt. For a Trezor hardware-wallet recovery, follow only the instructions shown on the Trezor device. A prompt on a computer or phone is not a substitute.
- Do not “test” your words on an unfamiliar page or utility. If you are unsure whether your backup is recorded correctly, use Trezor’s own backup-checking guidance and verify it before wiping or resetting a device or updating firmware.
What if your backup is missing or may be wrong?
Trezor’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that the recorded words are correct before wiping or resetting a device and before a firmware update. Do that only through the device’s supported process; never enter the words into an unverified website or third-party form.
If you can still access your wallet but have lost its backup, Trezor advises moving funds to a wallet with a backup you know is correct. If you can access neither the device nor the backup, self-custody may mean the wallet cannot be restored. See Trezor’s instructions for checking a wallet backup and its guidance for a lost or forgotten backup.

How should you store the backup?
Keep the words private and avoid digital copies. Trezor advises against storing a wallet backup in screenshots, photos, email, or cloud storage. A paper copy or durable physical storage can reduce some risks of damage or loss, but it does not protect the words if another person sees or takes them. Trezor’s backup-card guidance discusses physical storage and risks such as fire, water, and theft.
