A real CAPTCHA never asks you to open Windows Run, PowerShell or Terminal, paste text from your clipboard, or execute a command. Those instructions are the hallmark of “ClickFix,” a social-engineering technique that persuades people to install malware themselves. If you have not run the command, close the page. If you have, disconnect the device and begin incident response immediately.
What ClickFix is and why a CAPTCHA is involved
ClickFix is not a new type of CAPTCHA. It is a delivery method in which criminals disguise a malicious command as a harmless fix or human-verification step. A phishing email, malicious advertisement, search-result page or compromised website displays a convincing reCAPTCHA, Cloudflare Turnstile, “human verification” prompt, browser-update warning or fake system-error page.

The page uses JavaScript to place an obfuscated command on the clipboard. It then gives step-by-step directions such as pressing Windows+R, opening Windows Terminal or PowerShell, pasting the command and pressing Enter. On macOS, the equivalent lure can direct a victim to paste text into a shell. The user, rather than an automated exploit, performs the final execution, which can bypass security controls that block suspicious downloads or scripts arriving directly from a website.
“Real CAPTCHAs won’t ask you to run commands on your device.”

Federal Trade Commission consumer guidance, 2026
A legitimate CAPTCHA asks you to identify images, type displayed characters or complete another interaction inside the webpage. It does not require keyboard shortcuts, clipboard access, a command shell or a Run dialog.
How the fake-verification attack unfolds
- Arrival: The victim reaches a malicious page through a phishing message, malvertising, search-engine manipulation, a compromised site or, in some campaigns, an HTML attachment.
- Lure: The page imitates reCAPTCHA, Turnstile, a browser update, a blue-screen message or an error notice. Microsoft documented wording including “I am not a robot – reCAPTCHA Verification ID: XXXX.”
- Clipboard manipulation: JavaScript silently writes an encoded or otherwise obfuscated command to the clipboard.
- Execution instructions: The page tells the victim to open Windows Run, Terminal or PowerShell (or a shell on macOS), paste and press Enter.
- Payload retrieval: The command downloads or launches the attacker’s malware, often without a conventional installer.
- Persistence and theft: The malware may remain after reboot, steal credentials and browser sessions, log keystrokes, exfiltrate files or enable further access.
What malware ClickFix can install
Observed campaigns have delivered several categories of malware rather than one single “ClickFix virus.” Reported examples include:
Rank #2
- ONGOING PROTECTION Download instantly & install protection for 5 PCs, Macs, iOS or Android devices in minutes!
- TOP-PERFORMING VPN Faster speeds, more server locations, and greater connection control to protect your privacy across all your devices, including Smart TVs.
- ADVANCED SCAM PROTECTION Help spot hidden scams online. With the built-in Genie AI assistant, you’ll never wonder if a message or email is suspicious again.
- REAL-TIME PROTECTION Advanced security protects against existing and emerging malware threats, including ransomware and viruses, and it won’t slow down your device performance.
- DARK WEB MONITORING Identity thieves can buy or sell your information on websites and forums. We search the dark web and notify you should your information be found.
- Infostealers such as Lumma Stealer, which target browser passwords, cookies, cryptocurrency data and other credentials.
- Remote-access trojans including Xworm, AsyncRAT, NetSupport and SectopRAT, which can give an operator interactive control.
- Loaders such as Latrodectus and MintsLoader, whose main job is to fetch additional malware.
- Rootkits and keyloggers that hide components or capture everything typed.
Potential consequences include stolen banking logins, session-cookie hijacking, corporate account takeover, data theft, persistence through Startup folders or registry Run keys, lateral movement inside a network and, in some incidents, preparation for ransomware deployment.
How widespread the campaigns are
Microsoft Threat Intelligence first observed ClickFix activity in Storm-1607 email campaigns between March and June 2024. Microsoft also analyzed a Lampion campaign first identified in May 2025 and reported in August 2025 that campaigns were reaching “thousands of enterprise and end-user devices globally every day.” That figure is Microsoft’s assessment for that analysis period, not a universal count of every campaign.

Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency issued an “Ongoing ClickFix Campaign” alert on 10 July 2025. It described activity affecting technology, finance, manufacturing, retail, government, legal, utilities and energy organizations. A 2025 joint advisory from the FBI, CISA, HHS and MS-ISAC documented Interlock actors using fake CAPTCHAs to execute Base64-encoded PowerShell and establish persistence.
What to do if you see the instruction
If you have not pasted or run anything
- Do not press Windows+R, open a shell or paste the clipboard contents.
- Close the tab or browser window. If it will not close normally, end the browser process through the operating system.
- Do not download a “verification” tool or browser update offered by the page.
- Report the page or advertisement through the relevant browser, search or platform reporting channel.
Merely viewing a fake CAPTCHA is not the same as executing its command, but avoid interacting further with the page.
Rank #4
- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
If you pasted and pressed Enter
Assume the device may be compromised even if no obvious window appeared. Follow the Federal Trade Commission’s response sequence:
- Disconnect from the internet. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet. Keep the device isolated while you assess it.
- Run a security scan. Use up-to-date security software and allow a full scan; follow its quarantine or removal instructions.
- Update the operating system, browser and security software. Apply available fixes after the initial isolation and scan steps.
- Change passwords from a different, clean device. Prioritize email, banking, password-manager, work and social accounts. Do not reuse old passwords.
- Enable two-factor authentication on accounts that support it, preferably with an authenticator app or security key.
- Report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Because infostealers can capture session cookies and tokens, changing a password alone may not end an attacker’s access. Sign out other sessions and revoke active sessions or tokens where each service provides that control. Contact your bank through its official channel if financial credentials may have been exposed.

Checks for a potentially compromised computer
Security software can miss fileless or script-based activity, so a clean scan is not proof that nothing happened. Look for unfamiliar programs, browser extensions, scheduled tasks, Startup-folder entries and registry Run keys; unexpected PowerShell or command-shell activity; new administrator accounts; and unexplained outbound network connections. Do not delete evidence on a work computer before your security team advises you.
If the device contains sensitive business data, disconnect it and notify your organization’s incident-response or security team. They can preserve logs, inspect endpoint telemetry, reset credentials centrally and determine whether other systems were reached.
How organizations can reduce ClickFix risk
- Train users on the single decisive rule: CAPTCHAs do not require commands, clipboard pasting or Run/PowerShell.
- Harden endpoints: restrict unnecessary PowerShell and Windows Run use, apply application-control policies and use security tooling that monitors script-based and fileless execution.
- Monitor persistence: alert on new Startup-folder files, registry Run-key changes, suspicious scheduled tasks and unexpected encoded PowerShell.
- Protect credentials: enforce multifactor authentication, use phishing-resistant methods where possible and monitor for unusual session or token use.
- Keep software current: patch operating systems, browsers and endpoint security products so known weaknesses do not compound a social-engineering incident.
- Prepare isolation and recovery: maintain tested backups and a procedure for quickly quarantining an endpoint without destroying forensic information.
How to recognize the scam in seconds
- The “CAPTCHA” tells you to press Windows+R or another keyboard shortcut.
- It asks you to paste text you did not copy yourself.
- It names PowerShell, Windows Terminal, Command Prompt or a macOS shell.
- It claims a command is needed to prove you are human, fix an error or update the browser.
- The page is reached through an unexpected email, advertisement, search result or attachment.
Any one of these signs is enough to stop. A verification box that requires command execution is not a verification box; it is an attempt to make you the malware’s installer.
