Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a straightforward alternative that tracks repeated failures in logs and blocks offenders, consider SSHGuard. CrowdSec is a more modular option that separates log detection from enforcement and can add community threat decisions when connected to its network. OpenSSH’s built-in connection controls can help manage unauthenticated connection pressure, but they are not a like-for-like replacement for log-based repeat-offender bans.
How to choose a Fail2ban alternative
Choose based on what you need to detect and where you need the block enforced—not just on the product name. Check whether the tool can read the authentication events your host actually produces, how it recognizes repeated behavior, and whether its enforcement mechanism matches your firewall or application setup. The project documentation describes these architectures, but does not establish controlled head-to-head effectiveness results.

- Log compatibility: Confirm the detector can read the relevant file, systemd journal, or centralized log stream.
- Detection behavior: Understand the scoring, thresholds, and time windows that trigger a block.
- Enforcement: Verify which firewall, bouncer, or service component will apply the decision.
- Operations: Plan for trusted-address allowlisting, mistaken blocks, and a way to recover access.
- Data sharing: If using community intelligence, check what participation entails.
Fail2ban alternatives compared
| Option | Detection | Enforcement | Best fit | Check before adopting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SSHGuard | Recognizes attack patterns in logs or command output and scores offenders over a configurable interval. | One of several firewall backends. | A direct, relatively focused option for repeated SSH or other service attacks. | Confirm the log reader and backend; review thresholds, ban duration, and trusted-address whitelist. |
| CrowdSec | Acquires logs, parses and enriches events, then applies scenarios and profiles to identify behavior such as repeated failures. | A separate bouncer enforces decisions at a firewall, reverse proxy, web server, or another supported point. | Modular deployments, multiple machines, and installations that want optional community decisions. | Match acquisition and parsers to host logs; choose a compatible bouncer; understand Central API participation and data sharing. |
| OpenSSH connection controls | Controls unauthenticated connection handling and connection pressure; it does not provide the same log-based tracking of repeat offenders. | Applied by sshd. | A complementary measure for SSH connection pressure, not a full ban system replacement. | Check the installed OpenSSH release and its local sshd_config(5) documentation. |
SSHGuard: the closest focused alternative
The SSHGuard 2.4 manual, dated March 16, 2021, describes protection against brute-force attacks on SSH and other services. It aggregates system logs, recognizes attack patterns, scores offenders, and blocks them through a configured firewall backend. Its controls include detection windows, temporary blocks, optional persistent blacklisting, and whitelisting. See the SSHGuard manual.

SSHGuard is a sensible starting point when the goal is local, log-driven blocking rather than a broader detection and sharing system. Its setup still depends on wiring the correct log input to a working firewall backend. The SSHGuard setup guide cautions that firewall examples may need adjustment for the host’s actual ruleset; it also documents nftables sets that operators can inspect.

CrowdSec: separate detection from blocking
CrowdSec’s documented SSH brute-force flow is modular: an acquisition component reads service logs, parsers and enrichment prepare events, scenarios identify repeated behavior, and profiles create decisions. A bouncer then applies those decisions. This separation can be useful when detection and enforcement need to happen in different components or across a broader deployment. See CrowdSec concepts and its introduction.
For Linux firewall enforcement, CrowdSec lists support for iptables, nftables, ipset, and pf in its firewall bouncer documentation. For web applications, an IP-level firewall block may not be the right enforcement layer: CrowdSec recommends a WAF-capable bouncer for HTTP-aware protection, and such a bouncer can run alongside a firewall bouncer.

Community decisions are tied to connecting to CrowdSec’s network. Participating engines share detected attack signals and receive curated decisions. Treat that as an operational and privacy choice: review the data-sharing implications before enabling participation. When OpenSSH controls are enough—and when they are not
OpenSSH includes controls for handling unauthenticated connections, including probabilistic refusal at a configured load threshold. These act within sshd and can help with connection pressure, but do not themselves track repeated failures across logs and maintain offender bans in the same way as SSHGuard or Fail2ban. Use them as a complement when appropriate, not as an equivalent substitute. Directive behavior may vary by release and distribution; consult the installed sshd_config(5) documentation before changing settings.

Set up and verify the full detection-to-block path
- Identify the authentication log source. Determine whether sshd writes to a file, the systemd journal, or a centralized pipeline on this host. CrowdSec’s example acquisition uses
/var/log/auth.log, but that path is not universal; configure the reader for the installation’s actual source. - Confirm detection before debugging enforcement. Generate or locate representative failed-login events and check that the tool parses them and identifies the expected offender. A detector that has not matched an event cannot trigger a block.
- Check the trigger threshold. If events are matched but no ban occurs, inspect the configured threshold and time window. Fail2ban’s explanation of how it works identifies inactive jails, incorrect backends or log paths, and unmet thresholds as common reasons bans do not happen.
- Verify the enforcement component. Make sure the firewall backend or CrowdSec bouncer is installed, active, and appropriate for the host. Inspect the actual firewall table, chain, or set to confirm the offender’s address reaches the enforcement layer.
- Protect administrative access. Where appropriate, whitelist trusted addresses or CIDR ranges and keep a tested recovery path. A mistaken block can otherwise cut off remote administration.
- Tune cautiously. More aggressive thresholds may catch more repeated behavior but can also block legitimate users. Adjust thresholds and ban duration with that trade-off in mind.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose SSHGuard when you want a focused local tool that reads logs, tracks repeat offenders, and blocks them through a firewall.
- Choose CrowdSec when you want modular detection and enforcement, need integrations beyond a local firewall, or want the option of community decisions and accept the associated participation.
- Use OpenSSH controls as a complement when you need to manage unauthenticated connection pressure, while retaining a separate repeat-offender detector if that is the protection you require.
